the Bandersnatch

The Bandersnatch crashes, a mature male beast with a pale scar across one eye, crashes through the undergrowth ahead, a vast, long-limbed beast with antlered horns, moss-dark hide, and hooked claws that tear young trees apart. Leaves whirl in its wake.

Rowan

Rowan

Its trail bends toward Home.

It does not see Rowan. The creature's heavy passage leaves broken branches and deep furrows in the soil, opening a straight route toward the hidden glade and the house beyond.

Behind Rowan, the Hedges close around familiar paths. Ahead, the ravine cuts across the beast's route, narrow enough for an interception but steep-sided and choked with thornroot.

The Bandersnatch pauses on the far lip, nostrils widening as it tests the wind. Its head turns slightly, still searching for something other than Rowan.

A dead ash lies across part of the ravine, offering a rough bridge. Below it, black water glimmers between roots while the creature gathers itself to leap.

The next breath may carry Rowan's scent to it. The ravine remains the only clear chance to turn the monster away before it reaches Home.

Turn the Bandersnatch away from Home

Discover why the Bandersnatch is approaching Home

“Can Rowan's prior knowledge of the creature and survival instincts determine why the Bandersnatch has come near her home when none have before?”

YES (Unlikely, rolled 11)

The Bandersnatch lowers its scarred head toward the ravine, but its hunger does not shape the movement. Its ears keep twitching toward the Hedges behind it.

Rowan

Rowan

It is not stalking prey. It is running from something.

Rowan knows the signs from old hunts: a Bandersnatch claims ground with violence, but the Bandersnatch has left no feeding hollow, no marked boundary, no deliberate turn toward a familiar lair.

The torn trees form a corridor rather than a trail. Something has driven the beast out of its accustomed range, forcing it along the easiest living path through the Hedges.

That path ends at Home because the hidden glade is one of the few places the Hedges have not yet warped into a killing maze. The Bandersnatch is seeking shelter, not Rowan.

Beyond the far lip, the undergrowth shudders without wind. The pressure behind the Bandersnatch has reached the ravine, and Home lies directly ahead of the fleeing beast.

“Sneak around the creature without notice, then look upon the horizon from a high vantage point to determine, through the neighboring landscapes, what the Bandersnatch is running from.”

FAILURE (Good Stealth, rolled -2)

Rowan slips into the thornshadow and circles beneath the ravine lip, keeping the dead ash between herself and the Bandersnatch. Her movements are nearly soundless, but her Faoladh scent rides the damp air.

The creature freezes. Its scarred head jerks toward her hiding place, not with hunger but with alarm, and its antlered silhouette squares as though a wolf has cornered it.

Rowan

Rowan

It knows I am here.

Rowan tries to withdraw toward the ravine wall, but a thornroot snaps beneath her weight. The Bandersnatch recoils, then lunges across the dead ash, forcing her to abandon the crossing.

She scrambles up a leaning beech instead, claws finding bark, yet the Bandersnatch circles below and keeps its gaze fixed upward. Its fear has made stealth impossible.

From the branches Rowan sees only broken treetops and a narrow strip of horizon. Beyond it, dark columns of birds rise from the Hedges, but the ravine and the Bandersnatch block the higher view.

“Pounce upon the beast and tear it into the ground with the added weight and momentum.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +2)

the Bandersnatch

Rowan launches from the beech, abandoning concealment as the Bandersnatch turns below. Home lies beyond it, and every instinct in her hardens around the oath to protect her pack.

Her full weight crashes onto the beast's scarred shoulders. Momentum drives both of them off the ravine lip, through thorn and leaf, and into the muddy ground beyond.

The impact knocks the Bandersnatch flat. Its antlers gouge the earth, but Rowan lands astride its back and clamps her arms around its neck, forcing its chest into the soil.

the Bandersnatch

Away. Not toward the den.

The Bandersnatch thrashes beneath her, powerful limbs churning mud. Rowan's legendary strength holds it down, her claws biting only into hide and tangled moss rather than flesh.

The ravine falls still except for harsh breathing. The fleeing monster is pinned between Rowan and the earth, its route to Home completely broken.
