Adventure of Wicy 1

The forest falls so quiet that Wicy hears the fog bead on leaves. The stalking monster drops flat in the muck, whimpering.

A scarred giant slips down from the branches, heavy as a toppled oak. Its eyes burn with the same faint light as the shard in Wicy's hand.

The hooded figure snaps their staff up. White glare spills across the path, and the Retired Knight flinches beside Wicy, still empty-handed.

As the creature lands, the light within its eyes flickers in perfect, rhythmic sync with the pulsing glow of the shard in Wicy's palm. The creature winces, its predatory gaze darting away from the shard as if the very light it seeks is causing it physical pain.

Wicy searches her pockets and pack, but finds only her sketchbook and journal. There is no mirror, lens, or polished surface among her belongings to focus the shard's erratic, pulsing light.

Wicy glances past the knight, spotting his heavy steel blade lying discarded in the mud just a few feet away. Beside the weapon, the knight's leather scabbard and a small, ornate whetstone have tumbled into the dirt, abandoned in the chaos of the initial ambush.

Wicy snatches the knight’s sword from the mud and lunges low, putting the hooded figure between herself and the scarred creature.

The blade catches the shard’s pulse and throws a hard white line across the path.

The scarred creature jerks back, claws scraping bark, its glare breaking as the reflected light hammers its face.

The Retired Knight staggers forward into the open, shieldless but ready, while the lesser monster flinches deeper into the brush.

The shard’s glow catches brighter on the wet steel than before, and the scarred creature reels toward the trees, one arm raised against the glare.

Wicy shifts her stance in one smooth step, shoulder angling the sword like a mirror. The beam slides higher, sharper, and locks onto the scarred creature’s face.

The creature snarls and throws up an arm, but the reflected glare catches it full in the eyes. Its weight breaks backward toward the trees.

The lesser monster scrabbles deeper into the brush, leaving the path open for the first time since the creature dropped from the branches.

The scarred creature staggers at the edge of the treeline, still upright but visibly losing ground, while the hooded figure braces beside Wicy for the next move.

Wicy keeps the blade fixed, wrist locked, as the white streak pins the scarred creature at the treeline. Her cut palm stays wrapped tight around the hilt, blood darkening her grip.

The creature drags one claw across its face, then flinches back from the beam. Bark splinters beside its shoulder as it loses balance.

The lesser monster bolts from the brush behind the scarred thing, but the hooded figure swings the glowing staff across its path and drives it wide.

The scarred creature recoils into the shadow of the trees, no longer on the path, while the beam still burns across the clearing. The way ahead stays open, but the shard still gleams in plain view.
