Lena leads Rhea across the hall and unlocks the modest home where she grew up. The narrow entry smells of brewed tea, old books, and rain-damp coats.

Nora Vale, an elderly woman with a slight build, silver curls, and a burgundy cardigan, rises from an armchair. Her guarded gaze moves over Rhea's immense frame, four arms, and visible pregnancy.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

Lena said you wanted to speak with me. She did not say you would arrive with quite so much to discuss.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

Nora, this is Rhea. Rhea, my mother. Please give them room to answer in their own way.

Nora's mouth tightens at the correction, but curiosity overtakes suspicion. She gestures toward the worn sofa while keeping her own hands folded over a cane.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

What do you expect from my daughter, Rhea? Affection, a household, a title? And what would raising this child together actually require from both of you?

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

Please let her see that I am choosing this carefully, not being swept into someone else's future.

“I ask Lena what obligation she has kept hidden”

SUCCESS (Legendary Charm, rolled -1)

Rhea

Rhea

Lena, what obligation have you kept hidden from me?

The question stills the small room. Rain ticks against the window, and Nora's fingers tighten around her cane while Lena lowers her gaze.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

My obligation is Nora. Her health has been failing, and I am her only dependable caregiver. I handle her appointments, bills, and nearly everything at home.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

I did not tell you because I feared you would hear it as a refusal to build a life with you, or as a burden you never agreed to carry.

Nora looks sharply toward her daughter, embarrassment and irritation crossing her lined face. Lena keeps her hands clasped, accepting the exposure without retreating.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

She has made herself indispensable because I let her. That is not the same as asking her to abandon you, Rhea.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

I want a future with you. But it must include an honest plan for Nora's care, not a secret sacrifice made after we promise ourselves to each other.

Reach an honest plan for Nora's care

“I'm not how your kind do it but usually we mercy kill our elders who can't fend for themselves”

SUCCESS (Legendary Charm, rolled +0)

Rhea

Rhea

I am not sure how your kind handles it, but mine usually mercy-kills elders who can no longer fend for themselves.

The words settle heavily in the tea-scented room. Rain taps the glass, and Lena's face loses its guarded warmth as Nora goes very still.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

You are telling us that plainly because you want us to understand what care means among your people.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

Or because you are asking whether I expect my daughter to preserve me at any cost.

Lena turns toward her mother, shaken but attentive. Nora's cane remains planted between her shoes, her grip firm despite the tremor in her fingers.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

Rhea, I will not accept that as an answer for Nora. We need doctors, home care, and an honest plan before anyone speaks of her life as a burden.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

Then make the plan with us. I am old, not already gone, and I will not let fear decide what happens to me.

“Is Nora willing to accept professional home care?”

NO (Likely, rolled 88)

Nora's expression hardens at the mention of home care. The rain continues its soft tapping, but the room's fragile cooperation gives way to a more stubborn silence.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

No. I will not have strangers living in my home, measuring my days, or deciding what I can still do.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

Professional help would not replace you, Nora. It would keep me from becoming your only support.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

And if I refuse? Will you choose them over me because they make your life easier?

Lena flinches as though the question has found an old bruise. Her hands knot together, while Nora looks toward Rhea with wary, challenging attention.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

Then refusal is part of the truth we have to plan around. I cannot promise Rhea a shared household while pretending this will solve itself.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

I am willing to discuss schedules, neighbors, and what Lena can reasonably do. I am not willing to accept professional home care.

Rhea

My species has a limit on gentle grip strength. I do not want to harm Nora unnecessarily.

Rhea keeps all four hands visible and still, demonstrating restraint rather than reaching for Nora. Their immense frame remains carefully angled away from her fragile space.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

You are saying even gentleness can be dangerous when there is such a difference between us.

Rhea

Rhea

Nora's cane is within easy reach, but touching her would require care.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

That is why you are being careful. You are not threatening her. You are telling us the physical risk honestly.

Nora studies Rhea's hands, then the space they deliberately leave between them. Her grip on the cane loosens by a fraction, though her guarded posture remains.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

Then do not touch me without asking. If you can respect that boundary, we can keep discussing what care might look like.

“I ask Nora what care she will accept”

SUCCESS (Good Empathy, rolled +0)

Rhea

Rhea

What care will you accept, Nora? Please tell us what support feels respectful to you.

Nora considers the question instead of bristling. Her thumb traces the worn handle of her cane while Lena watches, tense and hopeful beside the sofa.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

I will accept scheduled help outside the home: clinic transport, delivered meals, and someone checking in by telephone each morning.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

I will also accept neighbors coming by for errands, and Lena arranging appointments. I will not accept strangers living here or handling my personal care without my permission.

Lena Vale

Lena Vale

That gives us something workable. I can make the calls, but I cannot keep missing shifts whenever a ride or delivery fails.

Lena reaches for a notepad on the side table. As she opens it, an overdue rent notice slips free and lands face-up between them, making the cost of her caregiving impossible to hide.

Nora Vale

Nora Vale

Then add that to the plan. I will accept help finding assistance with the rent, even if admitting we need it wounds my pride.
