The old road lies beneath a pale afternoon sky, its worn stones threading between dark pines. Freedom carries you onward, though hunger still hollows your body.
Ahead, faint black traces stain the road between the cracks, curling like spilled ink that refuses to settle. The air tastes cold and metallic.

Eliz
The magic is familiar, but the road was straight.
The stones bend sharply around a stand of trees. Beyond their trunks, where no cave should be visible from here, a distant black mouth opens in the hillside.
For one breath it resembles the Cave of the Ishwell, its entrance framed by warped branches. Then sunlight slips across the gap, and the shape becomes only shadow.
The black traces pulse once beneath your feet. Far ahead, the road continues toward the unseen town, while the crooked bend leads toward the impossible darkness.
✓ Quest Accepted
Reach the unseen town
“I continue to follow the road toward the unseen town.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +3)

You keep to the road and leave the crooked bend behind. The black traces pulse once at your heels, then unravel into harmless stains between the stones.
Your pace carries you swiftly beneath the dark pines. The metallic taste thins, replaced by woodsmoke, damp earth, and the distant clatter of a working settlement.

Eliz
The road still leads toward the town.
By late afternoon, the trees open onto a shallow valley. A palisade town rests below, its gate standing wide beneath a weathered sign marked with a white lantern.
You reach the gate without challenge. Beyond it, narrow streets glow with cooking fires, and a covered public well bears a painted symbol of shelter and clean water.
At the roadside just inside the entrance, a small wooden board lists vacant beds at the Lantern Rest. Its door stands open, offering warmth, water, and a place to hide from the open road.
Behind you, the impossible darkness is hidden by the trees. Ahead, the town receives you with ordinary noise and no sign of the cult.

Reach the unseen town
“Is the cult known in this town”
NO (Unlikely, rolled 81)

Warmth spills from the Lantern Rest into the street. A broad-shouldered middle-aged woman, with warm brown skin, a square face, and graying black hair braided over one shoulder, in a russet dress pauses behind the counter, studying your cult-black robe without alarm.

Mara
You look road-worn, traveler. Water is free here. A bed costs two coppers, if you have them.
Near the hearth, two laborers glance over, then return to their dice. No one stiffens at the robe or reaches for a weapon.

Mara
I'm Mara, by the way. And if you're wondering, I've never heard of any cult called Ishwell.
The name passes through the common room without recognition. One laborer asks what Ishwell is; the other shrugs, and Mara gives them no answer beyond a tired shake of her head.

Mara
If they have dealings here, they keep them hidden. This town knows the Lantern faith, the old road, and ordinary thieves. Nothing called Ishwell.
Outside, the gate bell sounds once for an arriving cart. Inside, the town's ordinary life continues around you, untouched by the cave's name and unaware of what follows the road.
“"p-pretend I... Didn't say it, nobody should know... Do.. you have food? Can I have some..?" I faced mara, asking somewhat politely though being very direct”
FAILURE (Poor Persuasion, rolled +1)

Eliz
P-pretend I... didn't say it. Nobody should know. Do you have food? Can I have some...?
Mara studies your face, then the black robe again. Your halting request lands awkwardly in the room's ordinary warmth, drawing no laughter, but not quite the easy welcome you hoped for.

Mara
You can have food. But not because you whispered yourself smaller. A bowl costs one copper, and if you have none, there is another way.

Eliz
The smell of stew is stronger near the kitchen door.

Mara
Wash the supper bowls and carry in two buckets from the well. I will feed you first, then count the work fair. No questions about your robe.
She lifts a chipped wooden bowl from beneath the counter and ladles thick stew into it. Steam curls upward with carrots, beans, and barley, plain food made suddenly precious.

Mara
Sit by the kitchen door, traveler. Eat where you can see the room. When you're finished, I'll show you the buckets.
✓ Quest Accepted
Get fed at the Lantern Rest
“"Oh thank you! They said people out here were mean... Your nice though" I'd simply do as told to go sit and eat, even with some manners”
SUCCESS (Poor Persuasion, rolled +2)

Eliz
Oh, thank you! They said people out here were mean... You're nice, though.
You offer the thanks with careful manners, then carry the steaming bowl to the kitchen door and sit where Mara instructed. The first spoonful warms your empty stomach.

Mara
Some are mean. Some are tired. Most are simply busy. Nice is a thing you choose, not a thing the road promises.
Mara sets a wooden cup of water beside your bowl and returns to the counter. Around you, dice click softly, plates scrape, and nobody interrupts your meal.

Mara
Eat slowly, traveler. There is enough for you. When the bowl is empty, I will show you where the buckets are.
The stew contains more barley than meat, but its heat settles through you. Beyond the kitchen door, the well rope creaks as someone draws water in the fading light.
