Brenda Kowalski’s kitchen is all warm lamplight, floral curtains, and the sharp smell of sugar. Joe Average stands near the table in his red and white shirt, trying to look as suburban as possible. Zibbler is under the counter, tail thumping, jaws busy with a chair leg.
The chair gives a wet, splintery crunch. Brenda freezes with a pie plate in both hands. Gerald Fitch, already half-leaning over a notepad, lifts his head like he has just heard a headline being born.

Brenda Kowalski
Joey... is your little dog supposed to do that?
Zibbler pauses only long enough to blink three stalked eyes at Brenda, tongue lolling happily, then chomps again. Gerald’s pen starts moving fast.

Gerald Fitch
That is not a normal dog. I mean, not even close. Joe, what exactly is he?
Brenda edges one step back from the table, still trying to decide whether to scold the creature or offer it a snack. The chair leg cracks off in Zibbler’s mouth.
The pie crust is still cooling on the counter.

Brenda Kowalski
If he wants something to chew, I have an old ottoman in the garage. But I am not buying this as a pet, Joey.

Gerald Fitch
Answer me straight. Is this thing from Earth, or are you going to make me write a very strange article?

Answer Gerald Fitch's questions
“"It's simple, he is very rare type of dog from my home country. I adopted him some years back and I've become very close too him, but like most dogs he eats anything he can find you must allow me to apologize on he behalf."”
SUCCESS (Superb Deception, rolled +1)

Joe Average
He is a very rare dog from my home country. I adopted him years ago, and he does eat anything he finds. I apologize on his behalf.
Brenda lowers the pie plate a little, eyes flicking from Joe to the splintered chair leg in Zibbler’s mouth. Gerald pauses mid-note, then writes slower, as if the story has become stranger and therefore better.

Brenda Kowalski
A rare dog, huh? Well. He certainly has a rare appetite.

Gerald Fitch
Years ago, you say? And this is normal where you are from?
Zibbler trots out from under the counter with the chair leg held like a prize, then drops it neatly at Brenda’s feet. Wood dust scatters across the tile.

Brenda Kowalski
He can stay, if he stays off my good furniture. And if he wants food, I have scraps.
Gerald glances between Brenda’s softened expression and Joe’s calm face, his suspicion thinning into a different kind of interest. He taps the notepad once, waiting for whatever Joe says next.
“Joe pretends to be offended making Gerald out to be a racist. "What do you mean normal where I am from? Are you implying because we are foreign we are not normal? I am just another earth human male, and Zibbler is just another domesticated earth canine! I don't appreciate your rude implications Gerald..."”
SUCCESS (Superb Deception, rolled +2)

Gerald Fitch
Right, yes, of course. Bad phrasing. I mean, you call him a dog, but he is not exactly any dog I know.

Brenda Kowalski
Gerald, let the man talk. Joe’s done nothing but apologize, and your notebook is getting nosier by the second.

Joe Average
I appreciate your concern. Earth customs can be confusing. Zibbler is a domesticated companion from my home, and he is very, very ordinary.

Brenda Kowalski
Ordinary, sure. But the way Joe says it makes it sound practiced, not invented on the spot.

Gerald Fitch
That answer is smoother than it should be. Still, nobody sounds this careful unless they have something to hide.
Zibbler plants both paws on the broken chair leg, then nudges it away from Brenda’s shoes as if presenting evidence of good manners.

Brenda Kowalski
Well. Your little companion has better table manners than half the boys I’ve met. Does he always come when called?
“I chuckled and said Zibbler is just a hungry dog then tell Zibbler to sit and behave as I ask Brenda for something to feed Zibbler with.”
SUCCESS (Great Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Joe lets out a small, easy chuckle and gives Zibbler a gentle command. The little alien dog freezes, then folds into a sit beside the chair leg, eyes bright on Brenda’s kitchen floor.

Joe Average
He is just hungry. If you have something he can eat, I would appreciate it.

Brenda Kowalski
Well, that is about the politest request I have heard in my kitchen all week. I’ve got leftovers, if your little gentleman can mind his manners.

Gerald Fitch
You really keep calling that thing a dog like it settles the matter. It is behaving, I’ll give you that.

Brenda Kowalski
Gerald, you can stare at your notebook later. Joe asks nicely, the critter sits nicely, and that earns a plate in my house.
She turns toward the stove, already deciding. Zibbler sits straighter, tail twitching over the tile dust, while Gerald watches both of them with narrowed, thoughtful curiosity.
“I answer Gerald plainly that Zibbler is a indeed a dog my dog from my home country just because it's not the kind of dog he's used too doesn't make Zibbler any less special that's my explanation of what he is”
SUCCESS (Superb Deception, rolled +1)

Brenda pauses at the stove, glancing back over her shoulder as if to make sure she heard him right. Gerald’s pen stills above his notebook.

Joe Average
Yes. Zibbler is a dog, from my home country. He just is not the kind you are used to.

Joe Average
That does not make him any less special.

Brenda Kowalski
Well. That is a very polite way to defend a very odd little dog.

Gerald Fitch
A home country, a strange pet, and the careful wording. Interesting.
Brenda sets a warm plate down and nudges it toward Zibbler with one cautious hand. The little creature leans forward, nose quivering.

Brenda Kowalski
If he is yours, then I suppose I can manage that. What does he eat, besides chair legs?

“I told Gerald I'm done answering his questions, why do have to always be interrogated because I'm a foreigner? (implying Gerald is racist hoping to get Branda's sympathy to maybe kick him out)”
FAILURE (Great Diplomacy, rolled -2)
Joe lets the silence stretch, then folds his hands on the counter. The question lands between the three of them like a dropped spoon.

Joe Average
I am done answering questions. Why do I have to be interrogated because I am a foreigner?
Brenda’s smile thins, not with anger, but with the look of someone hearing bad manners out loud for the first time. Gerald’s pen lowers a fraction.

Brenda Kowalski
Gerald, if you are trying to make my kitchen feel like a police station, you are doing a terrible job of it.

Gerald Fitch
That is not what I am doing. I am trying to understand why every answer gets wrapped in three more mysteries.
Zibbler snatches the offered food and backs up under the table, chewing with blissful indifference. The small, happy noise makes the room feel almost ordinary again.

Brenda Kowalski
He is a guest here, Gerald. If you want the truth, ask like a person, not a headline.
Gerald glances from Brenda to Joe, then taps his notebook shut instead of writing. His expression says the accusation missed, but the opening worked anyway, because now he is choosing his next question more carefully.
“I told Gerald I'm done answering his questions, why do have to always be interrogated because I'm a foreigner? (implying Gerald is racist hoping to get Branda's sympathy to maybe kick him out)”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +0)

Brenda lets out a slow breath and sets both palms on the counter. The kitchen goes quiet except for Zibbler’s happy chewing under the table.

Brenda Kowalski
You do not get to call this manners, Gerald. If Joe says he is done, then he is done.
Gerald closes the notebook fully this time and keeps it down by his side. His face softens, but only a little.

Gerald Fitch
Fair. I pushed too hard. I am curious, that is all, and I should have asked like a neighbor instead of a headline.
Brenda’s expression loosens at that, and she turns toward Joe with a look that is less alarmed than protective now.

Brenda Kowalski
Then ask something ordinary. Like whether he wants coffee, or whether that little beast can be trusted near my chairs.
Gerald glances at the ruined chair leg, then back to Joe. The suspicion is still there, but it sits beside real politeness now.

Gerald Fitch
All right. Joe, what is the one thing about you that people always get wrong?
“I chuckled saying other humans especially human woman always assume I'm married because I'm so handsome I must be taken but I am in fact currently single”
SUCCESS (Legendary Deception, rolled +0)
Joe lets out a small chuckle and answers with practiced ease, saying other humans, especially human women, keep assuming he must already be married because he looks too handsome to be available.
He adds that, inconveniently, he is very much single.

Brenda Kowalski
Well, that explains the smug face. I was wondering if you were carrying around a wife somewhere like spare change.

Gerald Fitch
Single, huh. That is not the answer I expected.

Gerald Fitch
He says it too cleanly. Still, it is the first thing about him that sounds plain.

Brenda Kowalski
Sit down, both of you. If we are doing questions, we are doing them with the dog not chewing my furniture.
Under the table, Zibbler pauses mid-chew and sniffs at the new mood like it is another snack.
