The vault chamber yawns open, cold and round, its walls wet with old salt. Ahead, the relic rests in a stone cradle beyond a shallow black pool. Chains scrape somewhere below the floor.

Gamb'lynn Junior and Master Kaelen stand at the stair's foot. The guardian rises from the dark water, a long reptilian head and iron ribs glistening in the sigil light.

There it is. Take the relic if you can, but do not let it close on you.

If the thing wakes fully, we may not leave this room.

The guardian turns its lidless eye toward them. Water ripples outward in hard rings, and the air tightens with the promise of a strike.

Gamb'lynn Junior has the path, the tools, and one breath to choose, lure the guardian off, dash for the cradle, or turn back with her life intact.

Gamb'lynn Junior flicks a glance past the guardian and snaps a pebble, still wet from the stairs, across the black pool.

The little splash rings out. The guardian whips its long head away from the cradle, iron ribs shifting with a low scrape.

Leave the cradle.

Instead of guarding the relic, it glides toward the sound, water peeling from its body in shining sheets.

Gamb'lynn Junior is already moving, light-footed and low, while Kaelen freezes a half-step behind her, staring at the opening she creates.

Now, Junior. Take it now.

The ledge stands clear, the cradle exposed under the sigil glow, and the guardian's attention has fully broken from it.

The Guardian of the Vault

The vault held its breath as the guardian turned toward the splash, water slipping from its scaled jaw.

Now, Gamb'lynn. Take it before it wakes fully.

With pleasure.

She slipped to the cradle, fingers closing around the relic as the dark water shivered behind her.

Gamb'lynn Junior left the vault with the relic secured and the guardian still feinting at shadows in the black water. Master Kaelen followed in wary silence, relief outweighing his fear at last. Behind them, the cradle stood empty, and the vault settled back into its old, watchful dark.
