Without Tancred touching it, the snapped sword fragment gives one clear metallic note. Blue witchlight gutters, and pale dust creeps across the stone floor in the shape of a sword before vanishing.

The Faint Voice

The Faint Voice

Du Morvannoux... heir beneath stone... stand before the judgment.

The words rise from far below, traveling through the chamber floor rather than the air. The young bard grips her silver charm, while Edric turns sharply toward the buried darkness.

Edric

Edric

That is an old judgment rite, brother. The blade has answered something beneath us, though I cannot tell whether it accepts thee or has summoned an enemy.

A second tremor passes through the table. The register’s pages lift though no wind moves, and a thin line of dust points from the chamber toward a sealed stair descending into blackness.

The Young Bard

The Young Bard

Can the rite be stopped? If it has called something here, we should not wait for it to finish answering.

Edric

Edric

I do not know. But the judgment named thy house, and the fragment is its witness. Whatever lies below now knows thou art here.

Far beneath them, stone grinds against stone. The blue witchlight steadies only enough to reveal the sealed stair’s first step, where fresh pale dust gathers in a waiting line.

“I am taking a look at this bard a bit more closely. They seem quite knowledgeable of things around here. What do I see/notice about her? What of the charm she clutches as if it protects her?”

Tancred studies the young bard rather than the stair. Her questions come from more than frightened instinct: she knows burial signs, old roads, and the habits of those who hide dangerous things.

The leatherbound journal helps him compare her phrases with the keep’s records. Insight marks practical knowledge earned under danger, while noticing she recognizes seals and noble claims without belonging to their circles.

Haunted suspicion overlays her face with accusing masks, but Investigation separates fear from evidence. She is an educated young woman, observant and cautious, trained by experience rather than formal courtly schooling.

Her silver charm is a small funerary medallion, worn smooth where her fingers worry it. Fine scoring around its edge forms a ward against restless dead, old-fashioned but carefully maintained.

The Young Bard

The Young Bard

It belonged to my mother. She said it was blessed for travelers who might meet the dead before reaching a church.

Edric

Edric

She has carried it faithfully. The charm will turn aside a whisper or lesser haunting, but it cannot shield her from an old judgment rite.

The examination takes precious minutes. While Tancred records the charm’s pattern and her practiced knowledge, pale dust reaches the sealed stair’s second step, leaving the finding clear but the deeper rite less patiently waiting.

Determine what the judgment rite demands of Tancred

“I scribble on parchment, "Forgive me, my lady. Thou are quite knowledgable for one so young. Though this may be due to thine travels. I meant no offense. However, I must descend alone to face this judgement. No one else, save perhaps Edric, should follow."”

Tancred lowers himself over the parchment. The charcoal stick moves in a steady hand, while the leatherbound journal keeps his apology and request ordered rather than hurried. Reads Public Authority shapes the address with precise respect for the young bard’s hard-won standing.

He writes: “Forgive me, my lady. Thou are quite knowledgable for one so young. Though this may be due to thine travels. I meant no offense. However, I must descend alone to face this judgement. No one else, save perhaps Edric, should follow.”

The journal’s earlier observations support every word: her knowledge is practical, her caution earned, and her charm valuable but insufficient against the ancient rite. The appeal lands as protection, not dismissal.

The Young Bard

The Young Bard

I understand, my lord. Thou hast not insulted me. If this judgment demands thee alone, then I shall remain here and guard the stair’s mouth. Edric may go with thee, if he consents.

Edric

Edric

I consent, brother. I know more of what lies beneath than she does, and I shall not let thee face its meaning unwitnessed.

The young bard steps back from the sealed stair and closes her fingers around her medallion. Edric moves beside Tancred as pale dust gathers across the next step, and the descent becomes theirs alone.

“I place a hand on the young bard's shoulder, quickly passing a small parchment to her, "If things seem dire, thou hast no obligation to me nor House du Morvannoux. Save thyself if necessary. Take this as well. My house is gone, but it may still serve to allow thee passage to safer lands." In her hand is a small seal of my house, along with a letter wax-sealed with a similar marking. Once that is passed to her, I descend down to face this judgement. My main sword sheathed, but the broken blade drawn, to guide me into the depths.”

Tancred places a hand on the young bard’s shoulder and retrieves a small house seal from among his remaining effects. He folds Natasha’s letter anew, adds a matching du Morvannoux impression, and passes both to her.

The Young Bard

The Young Bard

I shall keep them, my lord. Not as chains, but as proof that someone trusted me with a way beyond this cursed land.

The seal and letter settle into the young bard’s palm. Edric watches in silence, while the judgment’s pale dust draws a clean path down the stair.

Tancred draws the broken ancestral blade, its hilt serving as a dagger, and keeps his main sword sheathed. Haunted visions press accusing faces into the dark, but Reads Public Authority recognizes the rite’s demand without surrendering his judgment.

Edric

Edric

Then descend, brother. The blade remembers the way, and I shall witness what judgment makes of thee.

The broken blade gives a low metallic note and pulls his hand toward the depths. Willpower steadies him against Haunted’s distortions as he descends beside Edric, leaving the young bard to guard the stair’s mouth.

Determine what the judgment rite demands of Tancred

“I move deeper into the bowels of the earth. Using the broken blade as a dowsing rod of sorts to lead me to what I can only assume is a Hall of Judgement”

The stair descends through black stone, each step worn smooth by forgotten passage. The broken ancestral blade pulls steadily ahead, its hilt trembling like a compass toward the buried depths.

Haunted visions crowd the walls with accusing faces and false doorways, but the blade’s attunement draws Tancred’s hand toward the true path. Whispers of the Dead murmur beneath the stone, confirming each turn.

Edric

Edric

The dead are guiding thee, brother. Their voices gather beneath this place, where the old succession judgment was prepared.

The passage bends beneath the keep and opens into a vast hall. Pillars shaped like hooded judges support a vaulted ceiling, while a circular dais waits at the chamber’s center.

Pale dust lies across the dais in the outline of a kneeling figure. The broken blade points directly toward it, and the air carries the cold stillness of an ancient judgment.

The Faint Voice

The Faint Voice

Bearer of the broken house-blade, enter the Hall of Judgment. Let blood, oath, and succession be weighed before the stone that remembers.

Edric stops at the threshold as Tancred reaches the dais. The blade falls still in his grasp. He has found the Hall of Judgment, and every silent pillar now faces him.

“I walk towards this center pillar and kneel before it. I take my hand and place it upon the open wound of my chest, coating the palm in blood as I place it upon the pillar. Then, holding my hand to my throat, I begin to speak, "I, Tancred du Morvannoux. Second-son, and Lord of Trosylvia, swore a life-long oath to this land and its people. To nurture and defend it from all who sought to harm and hinder. I hath failed in this mission. I swore an oath to the Knights of Kelemvor, to guard the living from the undead. I hath failed in this endeavor as well, even becoming anathema to my very god. Judge me as thou see fit."”

Tancred crosses the hall and kneels before the center pillar. Haunted faces coil across the stone, but his hard-won resolve holds their accusations at bay.

He draws blood from the open wound in his chest and presses his palm to the pillar. Grave-hardened resilience bears the pain, while the broken ancestral blade steadies his hand like a sworn witness.

The blade’s old attunement draws the blood-mark into the pillar’s waiting channels. Whispers of the Dead gather beneath the hall, not to condemn him, but to bear witness as his oath and confession enter the stone.

The Faint Voice

The Faint Voice

The house-blade remembers. The oath is spoken, the failure confessed, and the judgment shall weigh the bearer, not the mask forced upon him.

The pillar accepts his blood. Pale light travels through the judges’ hoods, and the dais opens its silence to him: Tancred stands entered into the judgment, neither absolved nor condemned before the weighing begins.

“I stand resolute, sheathing the broken blade, and stretching my hands out in supplication, await the judgement that comes for me. I shall attempt to endure whatever comes.”

Tancred sheaths the broken blade and stretches both hands toward the hooded pillars. He remains kneeling, resolute, while Edric watches from the threshold without speaking.

The judgment descends as a pressure through stone and bone. Haunted faces surge around him, whispering that his vows were hollow and his failure defines him, but his will refuses their borrowed verdict.

Pain blooms through the wound in his chest, yet his death-hardened body bears it without collapse. The sensation becomes testimony rather than command, and his outstretched hands remain steady.

Battle-tested insight recalls every oath, battlefield, and choice in their proper order. He distinguishes defeat from betrayal, imposed undeath from chosen allegiance, and remembers precisely what he endured without surrendering his judgment.

The Faint Voice

The Faint Voice

The bearer endures the weighing. Failure is found, but treachery is not. The oath was wounded by death, not abandoned by the one who swore it.

Light fills the pillar and passes through Tancred without breaking him. The Hall of Judgment records him as steadfast: neither absolved of failure nor condemned as an enemy, but accepted as the rightful bearer who endured its truth.
