The cellar swallows the stairwell in sour grain stink and cold stone. The Woman at the Window lifts her lantern, and the iron-bound butcher’s door glints under a crust of old grime.
David Clarkson crouches at the stacked crates jammed before the door. Dust spills from the seams. Beyond them, somewhere in the dark, the ledgers wait.

The Woman at the Window
Move these, quietly. Once that door opens, the guild’s hands reach no farther.

The Tannery Hand
If those books leave the city, somebody gets paid. If they stay, somebody gets hanged.

The Reed Man
Then we split the weight and get on with it. No more stalling.
The Tannery Hand and the Reed Man step in from the stair, warily joining the cramped circle of lantern light. Their faces harden as the risks sharpen into one simple task.
David braces his staff against the nearest crate and starts to shift the barrier. The path to the ledgers, and to the city gate, finally begins to open.
✓ Quest Accepted
Move the crates away from the butcher's door
“Keep my eyes on the others while I shift the crates.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Agility, rolled +3)

David shifts his grip and drags the crate stack sideways, keeping one eye on the stair and one on the butcher’s door. The dust gives way in a cough of grain chaff, and the first crack of open floor shows beneath the barrier.
The Woman at the Window lowers the lantern to shield the flame, watching the others instead of the door. The Tannery Hand plants his shoulder against the timber and takes the weight without a word.

The Reed Man
The floor behind the crates is wrong. There is a line of loose stone.
David’s push catches. A hidden slab scrapes free under the last crate, exposing a dark seam in the cellar wall, just wide enough to admit a hand and a breath of stale air.

The Woman at the Window
There. That is not old wood. Keep it open.
The final crate lurches aside. From the gap, a wrapped bundle of ledger boards appears, bound in oilcloth and tucked behind the false facing.
The Reed Man reaches in first, silent as ever, and lifts the bundle free while the lantern light wavers over the torn sleeve caught on a nail near the stair.
