The Exorcist

The forest clearing lies beneath fading amber light. A standing stone throws its long shadow east, against the sun's dying angle, while the surrounding trees remain unnaturally still.

Beside the stone stands a gaunt middle-aged woman with wind-burned cheeks, iron-gray hair braided beneath a black hood, and a weathered coat stitched with faded devotional symbols. She grips a leather diary whose pages turn without wind.

I did not write that. I swear it by every name that still answers prayer.

Ink crawls across the newest page, dark and thick as old blood. The sentence forms in a cramped hand: THE PACT IS BEING ENDED IN LUCIFER'S NAME.

The Exorcist

The Exorcist

Lucifer has no claim here. None. The pact was sealed before my order existed.

The diary snaps shut, then opens to a perfectly blank page. A fresh line appears by itself, each letter sinking into the paper as though written from beneath it: CAIN.

The Exorcist

The Exorcist

It knows you. God preserve us, it knows exactly who you are.

The exorcist takes one stumbling step back. Behind her, the standing stone's shadow lengthens toward you, though the light has nearly vanished.

“Break Lucifer's claim on Cain”

SUCCESS (Good Occult Lore, rolled +3)

The shadow reaches Cain's boots. He plants his hand against the standing stone, and the mark beneath his skin answers with a cold, ancient pressure.

Cain

Cain

The claim is a name laid over mine, not a chain.

Cain speaks the old distinction without raising his voice: God's mark remains, but Lucifer's claim does not. The stone receives each word like a verdict.

The lengthening shadow breaks apart at Cain's feet. A sound like distant iron dragged across stone passes through the clearing, then vanishes beyond the trees.

The Exorcist

The Exorcist

You severed it. Not denied it, not hidden it. Severed.

The diary opens in the exorcist's hands. The crawling ink has faded, leaving only a clean page and one ordinary word: Cain. The clearing's stillness loosens.

The Exorcist

The Exorcist

Then whatever comes next is not his summons. It is yours to face beneath your own mark.

The Exorcist

Cain studies the diary without touching it. The blank page darkens beneath his gaze, and older writing rises through the paper in layered, disciplined lines.

Cain

Cain

The pact is a custody oath, not a service to Lucifer.

He understands the terms at once. The exorcist's order was to keep the standing stone sealed, speak no invocation over it, and reveal the pact's wording to any marked wanderer who reached the clearing.

In exchange, the stone would conceal the order's dead from a presence that hunted names. The pact forbade command, worship, and sacrifice; its sole permitted act was witness.

Then the order failed before I was born. We were taught to guard the stone, never told what it guarded.

The reading costs Cain the remaining light. Minutes vanish while he follows each clause through its archaic revisions, and the final signature stays beyond recognition beneath a seal of black wax.

The Exorcist

The Exorcist

You know the terms now. But not who signed them.
