The earth drops out from under the courier in a choking burst of dust and broken stone. Onefinger reaches the edge just as the graveyard gives way into a hidden stair, cold air rising from below.
He descends into a stone-lined crypt, lit by a dull, sickly glow from an altar deeper in the chamber. The smell is ancient dust, wet mortar, and the last trace of the courier’s dark magic.
The Royal Courier scrambles to his knees amid cracked slabs, one hand braced on the floor. His cloak is torn, his breath ragged, and he stares toward the altar as if it might still answer him.

The Royal Courier
Stay back. I can still pull this rite together.
The altar’s glow tightens into a steady pulse, gathering the magic into one waiting point. The crypt seems to listen.

Onefinger
The altar is the center of it now.

Stop the courier from completing the ritual
“I unleash a blast of dragon-fire directly at the glowing altar.”
SUCCESS (Good Ranged Combat, rolled +0)

Onefinger’s dragon-fire snaps across the crypt and strikes the altar full on. The sickly glow flares white-hot, then stutters, and black smoke curls off the carved stone.

The Royal Courier
No, wait, hold...
The courier recoils from the blast, one arm thrown up against the heat, as the altar’s pulse breaks into a ragged flicker.

The Royal Courier
Stop. If it shatters, the rite spills loose.
Cracks race along the altar’s face. Dust shakes free from the ceiling, and the gathered magic hisses in on itself instead of surging outward.

Onefinger
The altar is failing.
The courier rises, shaken but desperate, and reaches toward the altar with both hands as if to steady it by will alone.

The Royal Courier
Onefinger, let me finish this, or we both deal with what comes next.
“I descend into the crypt”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Onefinger drops the last stair into the crypt, boots skidding over loose grit as he reaches the floor below. Smoke drifts around his legs, and the altar’s broken pulse throws pale light across the chamber.
The Royal Courier flinches at the sound of him landing, then plants both palms against the cracked stone, trying to hold the flicker together. His chant comes out thin, strained, and hurried.

The Royal Courier
Don’t let it collapse. If the seal gives, we both pay for it.
The altar answers with a dry shiver. Fine cracks leak smoke, and a hard, unstable glow crawls through the carved lines at its base.

The Royal Courier
Help me steady it, or strike now and finish this.
Onefinger stands at the crypt floor now, within reach of the altar and its trembling light. The courier keeps one hand on the stone and the other half-raised, waiting for the next move.
“I strike the altar now”
SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +4)

Onefinger brings his focus down in a single hard strike. The altar bucks under the blow, cracks snapping wide as its glow gutters and breaks apart in a burst of smoke.
The Royal Courier staggers back from the stone, his chant cutting off mid-breath. The carved lines go dark, then stay dark, and the chamber’s trembling hush finally takes hold.

The Royal Courier
No... that was the seal.
A thin seam in the altar splits open with a dry click, and cold air pours out of the hidden cavity beneath it. Something inside the stone chamber is revealed, a narrow passage slick with old dust and sealed bone charms.

The Royal Courier
He can still see it. The breach is open.
The courier snatches one broken piece from the altar’s edge, then freezes as the dark passage exhales a second draft, deeper and older than the smoke.

The Royal Courier
If you go in there, do not touch the bindings.
