Escape to the Open Plains

Kaelis throws haste into his limbs and the world seems to thin behind him. Mud gives way to hard grass, then open hills, the marsh air falling off into a clean, wind-cut chill.

Below the rise, wild horses graze in loose bands, their tails flicking through the tall grass. Farther on, a squat hill troll with a nest of wild hair pauses over its foraging and stares up at him.

For one brief beat, the creature just watches. Then it turns and scampers over the next hill, low and quick for something so bulky.

Kaelis

Kaelis

The plains are open. I can lose them here.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Huh. Fast little blood.

The voice comes from the far side of the rise, rough but not threatening, already fading with the troll's retreat. Wind combs the grass around Kaelis, and the seal-ring in the mud is far behind him now.

Discover the troll's intentions

I say, i am fleeing troops that would send me to an orphanage, i mean you no threat

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

Escape to the Open Plains

Kaelis slows just enough to call out across the grass, keeping his blade low and his hands open. The wind carries his words to the troll instead of his fear.

Kaelis

Kaelis

I am fleeing troops that would send me to an orphanage. I mean you no threat.

The hill troll stops chewing, one heavy hand resting on a tuft of grass. It studies him with a sideways tilt of the head, as if weighing the shape of his story.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Troops? Hm. Little one runs from clan-people, then.

Kaelis does not get a chase. He gets a witness. The plains feel less empty, and more watched.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Orphanage is bad den, if they take you by force.

A loose bit of metal flashes at Kaelis's belt when he shifts, the old seal-ring from the mud catching the light before the grass hides it again.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

You smell like road-dust and trouble. Keep moving, or sit and tell it plain.

Discover the troll's intentions

I say, youre probably right, theyre chasing me and i could end up here questioning you, threating. I say i must continue fleeing

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +1)

Escape to the Open Plains
Kaelis

Kaelis

You are probably right. They are chasing me, and I could end up here questioning you, threatening. I must keep moving.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Hm. Then go, little one. Plains keep ears, but legs are legs.

Kaelis dips his chin once, a quick, polite refusal, and turns his body back toward the grass before the offer can become a stay. The wind takes the last of the moment with him.

He starts down the slope, falchion still low, backpack shifting against his shoulder. Behind him, the troll remains on the rise, watching without following.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Road-fleeing boy. Troubled by human teeth, but honest enough.

As Kaelis pushes into the grass, the plains feel less empty than before. He is not alone out here, only unclaimed.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach safety beyond the plains

I say, i meant they* could end up here, questioning you

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled -1)

Escape to the Open Plains
Kaelis

Kaelis

I meant, they could end up here, questioning you.

The troll’s ears angle forward. The wind combs the grass between them, and Kaelis’s correction lands clear, plain, and late enough to matter.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Ah. That kind of they.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Then your troubles have legs. Wise to keep walking.

Kaelis keeps moving, but the words cost him a breath and a sliver of noise, enough to make the troll’s attention sharpen instead of wander.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

You speak careful for someone chased. Not many wanderers do.

Out in the grass, the plains feel less like empty space and more like a place with eyes, even when none are seen.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Go on, then. If you return, call out first.

I continue fleeing but catch my breath, quick walking

SUCCESS (Fair Health, rolled +1)

Kaelis lowers his pace to a quick walk, pulling air in through his nose while the grass whips past his legs. The plains still stretch open ahead, but the way forward feels less like flight now and more like a hard-earned lane through wind and watchful silence.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Better. Running makes a story look like prey. Walking tells it to listen.

The troll remains on the rise, still and intent, as if Kaelis’s breathing is part of what it came to study. The faint glint at Kaelis’s belt catches again when he shifts, a small bright thing against all that green.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

You carry fear like a pack, but you do not drop it. That is rare.

Kaelis

Kaelis

He is still watching.

Kaelis’s steps keep their rhythm, and the distance between them grows by honest effort, not rescue. The wind takes some of the strain from his lungs, yet the feeling of being seen stays fixed on his shoulders.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Most pass through my hills thinking the land is empty. You do not.

Escape to the Open Plains

I cast identify on the ring

SUCCESS (Good Arcana, rolled +0)

Escape to the Open Plains

Kaelis pinches the ring free of his belt and holds it where the wind can reach it. For a breath, the metal is only metal, cold and plain.

Kaelis

Kaelis

The runework is old.

Then the sight sharpens in his mind. A seal, a binding mark, and beneath it a faint thread of command magic, worn but real.

Kaelis

Kaelis

It is not just a lost trinket.

A second pulse answers the first, thinner and meaner, like the residue of a fear spell rubbed into the loops. The ring feels tied to authority, to pursuit, and to someone who wanted obedience.

Out on the rise, the Hill Troll tilts its head at the stillness in Kaelis’s hands, watching the change in him with open curiosity.

The plains ahead remain open, but the ring now means something dangerous has a name, and somewhere behind Kaelis, that name may still be looking for him.

I put it tucked deep away, and continue jogging

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

Escape to the Open Plains

Kaelis tucks the ring deep into his pack, then breaks into a light jog. The wind takes the last glint of metal from view as the grass parts around his boots.

He keeps his shoulders low and his pace steady, choosing distance over drama. Behind him, the hill still holds its watcher.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

You move like one used to being chased.

The troll does not follow, but its voice carries over the grass, clear enough to track him.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

Go on, then. The plains do not stay empty for long.

Kaelis keeps running, and the strange feeling settles in with the dust, he is not alone out here. Something in the wild has marked him as worth watching.

Ahead, the land opens wider, but the wind seems to wait for his next choice.

Kaelis leaves Rolling plains beyond the marsh behind and arrives at Wooddrowr.

I go to high ground and look for city smoke. The dwarf run city Wooddrowr is in this direction i ran

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Escape to the Open Plains

Wooddrowr rises ahead in broken tiers, stone cut dark against the sky. Kaelis reaches the high ground and lets the wind comb through the grass below him.

From here, the plains spread wide and empty, but the line of the dwarf run city stands out at last, a hard, smoky smudge on the horizon.

Kaelis

Kaelis

There. Smoke.

The smoke drifts in a low gray ribbon, thin but real, enough to prove people are there.

Below Kaelis, the hill troll is still back on the rise, a watchful shape against the grass, not following, only waiting.

The Hill Troll

The Hill Troll

You found your way, little runner. That way smells of people.

Kaelis also spots a narrow track cutting toward the distant smoke, with wagon ruts darkened by recent rain. The road looks used, and that means help, or trouble, or both.

Kaelis leaves Wooddrowr behind and arrives at Silverrift.

I know straight from charris to woodrowr the mean dwarf populated city there is a 3rd city Silverrift, hidden in a large tree thicket of many straight past woodrowr, same kind of region but ran by a young male, very rich and powerful half elf leader named O'brien Sampwil, full of elf mostly, few human and others. I head that way, around woodrowr

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Escape to the Open Plains

Silverrift hides inside a thick crown of straight trees, their trunks packed close as a palisade. Kaelis slips in beneath the bough-shadow, and the plains vanish behind him.

The air turns cool and damp. Pale leaves whisper overhead, and a narrow root path threads between moss and old bark toward a cluster of lantern glows.

Ahead, half-elf and human voices drift from the thicket edge, low and alert. A young sentry in bright green stands on the path, watching the newcomer with practiced stillness.

Young Sentry

Young Sentry

You are off the road. State your business in Silverrift.

Kaelis

Kaelis

I am just passing through.

The sentry’s gaze flicks to Kaelis’s pack, then to the tree line behind him, as if measuring whether he arrived alone.

Young Sentry

Young Sentry

Then pass carefully. Our lord dislikes surprises, and so do we.

I thanks him and use my memory of visiting here a few times, to find the central section, for recruitment

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

Escape to the Open Plains

Kaelis gives a quick thanks and takes the sentry’s measure with a nod, as if they have already met in passing before. He turns off the main root path and slips into the remembered lanes of Silverrift, moving by old memory more than sight.

The lanterns multiply between the trunks, and the thicket opens into a denser heart of walkways, woven roots, and narrow platforms. The cost shows in his pace, a twig snaps under his boot, sharp and loud in the hush.

A pair of silvered glances from farther in the trees follows that sound. Kaelis notices them before they vanish behind hanging leaves, and the feeling returns, plain now, that this place has eyes.

Young Sentry

Young Sentry

If you know the inner paths, then keep to them. Don’t wander where the lord’s folk are working.

Kaelis reaches the central section, where the paths knot tighter around a lantern-lit clearing and posted notices. The smell of resin and wet bark hangs there, with other recruits and watchers moving just out of easy notice.

A notice board stands ahead, crowded with marks and summons. Among the paper edges, a wax seal catches the light for an instant, and the old memory of a dropped ring seems suddenly less private.

He is here, but not unseen. The central court waits for someone to speak to him first.
