Adventure of Syn 1

The red scan line crawls over the dust, then jerks off target as the maintenance drone limps past Syn’s hiding place. Its torch spits against the floor, throwing brief orange light across the tunnel walls.

A slim figure in a maintenance coat steps out from a side access hatch, one hand raised toward the drone. A tool sling hangs at their hip, and a compact repair tablet glows blue in the dark.

The drone stutters, pivots, and drags one arm across the wall in a shower of sparks. The figure winces, then angles the tablet toward it like they are trying to read a failing pulse.

The drone’s red beam sweeps back toward Syn’s cover, slower now, uncertain. The engineer shifts their weight, ready to bolt or help, depending on what Syn does next.

Syn slips out of cover in one smooth rush, bare feet silent on the dust, and gets her device onto the drone’s service port before it can swing back. The screen flares, then settles into a pale maintenance grid.

The drone jerks once, its torch dimming. Its red scan line collapses into a steady amber blink, and the cutting arm folds inward with a mechanical click.

Syn’s diagnostic feed races across the tablet. Error warnings peel away as the unit’s damaged loop starts to self-correct under her patch.

The drone hangs motionless above the floor, powered down but still plugged into Syn’s repair line, waiting on her next move.

Syn scrolls the diagnostic stream, filters out the corruption tags, and strips the bad routines down to their source addresses. The drone’s status columns snap from amber warnings to clean green lines.

A hidden loop surfaces in the memory tree, a stale patrol directive tangled with a looped scan trigger. Syn isolates it and flushes the packet chain.

The engineer leans closer, tablet angled to catch the feed, while the drone stays limp and compliant on the floor.

Syn finishes the repair pass. The service port light shifts to a steady blue, and the last error banner vanishes from the screen.

The drone gives a soft confirmation chirp, then goes still again, waiting for fresh instructions. Somewhere deeper in the tunnel, a distant metal clank answers the quiet.

The engineer taps the tablet, and a thin route line blooms across the display. Their shoulders ease as the drone stays inert beside them.

They glance up at Syn, then back to the map, and make a small guiding motion toward the tunnel branch.

Syn slips into motion, silent on the metal grating, and the engineer eases back to give her the lane. The dormant drone stays where it is, folded and compliant.

The service spine narrows around her as she follows the map line into the darker branch. Blue light thins behind her, and the tunnel swallows the tablet glow.

A left ladder rises out of the floor. Syn passes it, then the hand-sluice under the coolant pipe, and the air changes from damp metal to colder freight dust.

She reaches the freight access threshold, and the tunnel opens into a wider maintenance apron beyond. The engineer remains behind her, small in the blue spill, while the corridor ahead is clear but unlit.
