The chained gate still groans behind Elana, holding against the receding surge. They limp into the service office, leaving the entrance visible through its broken windows.

Dusty desks and overturned filing cabinets crowd the room. A battery radio crackles atop a counter, its antenna bent toward the flooded road.

Small voices whisper through the radio, followed by the creak of hulls and distant water. Beyond the office, the gate gives another warning groan.

The radio hisses between words. Elana’s prosthetic leg answers with a sharp warning tone, while shadows shift beyond the bowed gate and the crossing falls quiet.

Elana remains at the broken office window, armor squared toward the bowed gate. Their four arms hold the weapon system ready while the prosthetic leg stays locked beneath them.

Across the water, the children’s voices fade beneath the wind. The boats remain secured beneath the old marina sign, safely beyond the flooded road.

Another tremor passes through the gate, but its chains hold. Elana does not advance, leaving the crossing clear for anyone else who might reach it.

The radio crackles, then settles into a thin open channel. Water laps against the distant boats while the service office fills with dust and cooling metal.

Elana continues to hold the line, isolated but unshaken, preserving the only safe route between the fortified stop and the far shore.

Elana searches the service office, loading lengths of shelving, a steel desk frame, wheel rims, and a heavy tool chest against their armored body. They carry each piece toward the gate.

Outside, they inspect the perimeter wall in sections, brushing dust from cracked concrete and probing every seam with the edge of their integrated weapon housing.

They identify three breach vectors: the bowed gate center, a foundation fracture beside the service road, and a low drainage gap hidden behind collapsed pallets.

Elana wedges the steel desk frame across the gate braces, anchors the shelving against the fractured wall, and stacks wheel rims over the drainage gap.

The tool chest locks beneath the gate’s weakest hinge, adding weight where the metal shudders. Loose scrap becomes a layered barrier, leaving the crossing lane clear.

Their prosthetic leg emits another warning tone, but the reinforced perimeter now covers every discovered breach vector. Elana returns to the broken office window and resumes watch.

Elana moves along the perimeter, testing the wheel rims, shelving, and steel braces with measured pressure from their armored hands. Nothing shifts under the first inspection.

At the drainage gap, they press down on the stacked rims and collapsed pallets, then probe the concrete edges. The barrier holds, though one pallet has settled into loose dust.

They drag a second shelving section into place and wedge its lower frame beneath the settled pallet, locking the rims tighter against the wall and narrowing the remaining opening.

Elana returns to the foundation fracture, checking each anchor by hand. A shelf corner flexes against cracked concrete, so they add wheel rims behind it and brace the stack with the tool chest handle.

They test the reinforced wall again with their full strength. The shelving groans but stays seated, and the fractured section no longer sheds dust into the service road.

Beyond the braces, the gate remains closed and the crossing lane remains clear. Elana settles at the broken office window, weapon ready, while the warning tone in their prosthetic leg fades.
