Usagi 1

The empty revolver remains in Usagi’s wounded hand as the arena floor splits around a turning iron lock. Stone grinds apart, revealing a narrow stairway descending into darkness.

Queen Beryl’s sigil covers the stairwell walls, interrupted by fresh black handprints that reach upward from below. Sailor Sailor Mars lies motionless between Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus.

Sailor Jupiter hooks an arm beneath Sailor Mars’s shoulders while Sailor Venus takes her legs. Their boots scrape over the carved sentence: ONE REMAINS.

Below, something drags a chain across stone. The sound pauses beneath Usagi, then resumes one stair at a time, while Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus begin lowering Sailor Mars into the black opening.

Usagi descends after Jupiter and Venus, the empty revolver heavy in her wounded hand. The black handprints flank her passage, their fingers pointing downward.

The dragging chain stops as Jupiter and Venus carry Mars through an arched doorway. Beyond it, candle flames burn without wicks around a sunken stone chamber.

At the chamber’s far end stands Queen Beryl, a tall adult woman in a black gown, pale face framed by crimson hair and a jagged silver crown.

Usagi closes the distance before Queen Beryl can gesture. The Disguise Pen flashes in her hand, its tip driving beneath the jagged silver crown.

The queen stiffens. Her black gown ripples as if filled by a storm, then collapses around her when the pen’s light tears through the occult power holding her upright.

Beryl’s voice breaks into a dry whisper. She falls across the chamber stones, motionless, and the crimson fire behind her eyes goes dark.

The Disguise Pen cracks down its center. A backlash scorches Usagi’s palm, and every wickless candle extinguishes at once, leaving the chamber blind.

Queen Beryl’s body remains still beside the sunken altar. Somewhere beneath the floor, locks begin opening in sequence while the prison exhales cold air around the living.

Usagi turns from the opening locks and relieves herself over Queen Queen Beryl’s motionless corpse. The stream darkens the black gown and runs toward the sunken altar.

Nothing answers. Queen Beryl remains still, her crimson hair spread across the stone, while the last trace of occult fire fades from the chamber.

Sailor Jupiter adjusts Mars’s shoulders, and Sailor Venus lifts the unconscious Guardian’s legs. Their combined weight shifts toward a newly opened passage.

The locks beneath the floor finish turning. A stone door at the chamber’s rear withdraws without resistance, revealing a stairway washed in pale moonlight.

Behind them, Queen Queen Beryl’s corpse lies abandoned beside the altar. Ahead, cold night air reaches the chamber, carrying the distant sound of surf.

The passage opens onto a narrow cove beneath the prison. Usagi reaches the shore first, while Jupiter and Venus carry Mars after her through the pale surf.

A small fishing boat rocks beyond the breakers, its hull scarred and its oars still secured inside. Usagi wades toward it, clutching the empty revolver.

She catches the gunwale and pulls herself aboard. The boat immediately lists toward the island, dragged by a black rope vanishing beneath the cove.

The rope tightens. The boat swings broadside, and pale symbols surface along its hull, sealing every oarlock with a crust of salt and ash.

Usagi raises the transformation brooch. Its pale light spills across the salt-sealed boat, drowning the cove in a soundless dawn.

White feathers unfurl from her shoulders as the transformation completes. Her sailor form becomes an angelic figure crowned in silver light, with vast wings cutting through the mist.

The black rope snaps taut beneath the water, but Usagi rises before it can pull her away. Spray spirals beneath her bare feet as the cove drops below.

Usagi beats her wings once, then again. The prison shrinks into a crooked silhouette, its candles and black walls swallowed by fog as she crosses the open sea.

Behind her, the island’s unseen presence calls through the clouds, but the voice cannot reach beyond the widening circle of moonlit air. Usagi escapes the island.
