Usagi and the nine Sailor Guardians arrive on a shore of black sand. Behind them, two other captives stumble from the surf, while a vast seal smolders across the beach.
Queen Beryl’s mark forms letters in the ash: TWELVE ENTERED. ONLY THE LIVING MAY LEAVE. The words pulse like a wound beneath the moonless sky.

the bound captive
Please! Someone, please get me out of this!
A young adult man in a torn gray coat lies restrained beneath a stone blade suspended from a crooked tower. Its chain groans as the slab lowers by inches.

the older captive
There has to be a rule. A loophole. We cannot just do what she says.
The second stranger, an elderly woman with silver hair, a red scarf, and a brass key clenched in one hand, backs toward the tide. The Guardians search the beach for weapons and answers.

Sailor Mars
Do not touch the seal. Something is listening through it.

Escape the black-sand shore alive
“Find a gun”
SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +1)
Usagi searches the black sand beyond the smoldering seal, keeping clear of its pulsing letters. Moonlight catches something half-buried beside a wrecked lifeboat.
She digs through cold sand and finds a revolver wrapped in oilcloth. The metal is damp but intact, its wooden grip marked with a tiny crescent-shaped notch.

Usagi
The gun is loaded.

Sailor Mars
Usagi, do not point that at the seal. It will give the thing listening an invitation.
The suspended stone blade groans overhead. The bound captive twists against his restraints, eyes fixed on the revolver as though it were a key rather than a weapon.

the older captive
A gun will not break that curse. But the tower has a lock. Look beneath the chain.
Usagi has the revolver in hand. Beneath the crooked tower, a narrow iron lock glints where the chain disappears into the stone.

“Shoot the captive”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

The revolver cracks across the shore. The bound captive jerks as the bullet strikes him, and the suspended stone blade stops descending.
Smoke drifts from the barrel. The bound captive’s restraints slacken, his head falling still beneath the crooked tower.

Sailor Mars
Usagi! What have you done?
The ash letters flare white. TWELVE ENTERED becomes ELEVEN REMAIN, each word sinking into the sand like a verdict.

the older captive
No. That was not a loophole. That was the rule.
The elderly woman’s brass key begins turning by itself. Beneath the tower, the narrow iron lock clicks open, revealing a darkness deeper than its small space should contain.
“Shoot the Older captive and Sailor Mars also”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Usagi raises the revolver. The first shot tears through the elderly woman, and her brass key clatters across the black sand as she collapses beside the tide.
Before Sailor Mars can move, the second shot strikes her. She falls hard against the seal’s edge, her red uniform stark beneath the dead moon.
The revolver bucks violently, splitting its wooden grip against Usagi’s palm. Blood beads across her fingers, while the tower’s impossible darkness yawns wider.

Sailor Jupiter
Mars!
The ash verdict burns brighter. ELEVEN REMAIN changes to NINE REMAIN, then the letters twist into a fresh command: BRING ME THE KEY.

Sailor Venus
That was not the curse. That was Usagi. Everyone, back away from her!
The brass key lies within reach of the opened lock. From the darkness beneath the tower, something begins counting softly, using the dead woman’s voice.

“I flee the shore with the Guardians”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +2)

Usagi runs from the shore with the Guardians, the broken revolver clenched in her bloodied hand. Black sand gives way to wet grass beneath their feet.

Sailor Jupiter
Keep moving! Do not look back!
Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus drag the unconscious Sailor Mars between them. The others form a tight retreating ring, watching the moonless beach.

Sailor Venus
The key stays there. Whatever it wants, we are not bringing it with us.
They cross a rise and the shore vanishes behind dark reeds. The counting fades, but the dead woman’s voice follows through the mist.

the counting voice
Nine remain. Nine remain. Nine remain.
At the top of the hill, the Guardians reach an abandoned road and stop beneath leaning telephone poles. Behind them, no footsteps emerge from the fog, only a distant lock clicking shut.
