The Wizard Emerges into Ash

Ellowicous the Black steps out from the obsidian tower and into the burned hush of Gullombog. Ash drifts through sour air, and the twisted trees stand black against a low, sickly sky. At the tower’s base, goblins crouch half-hidden in the shadows, watching him for the first sign of command.

Beyond the tree line, the forest floor dips into a ruined ring of cracked stone and warped roots. The shadows from the tower stretch long across the ground, pointing toward the outer wall like a warning finger.

The Black Book stirs near him, its cold pulse tightening into a thin, guiding thread. It does not speak aloud, but its pressure insists on urgency, on choice, on motion.

Choose, and move. The watcher nears.

The goblins shift nervously, one clutching a spear, another a bundle of broken timber. They glance from Ellowicous to the tower stones, ready to begin fortifying the base if he gives the word.

Above them, the polluted wind combs through the dead branches, carrying the faint rattle of loose stone from somewhere beyond the wall.

Fortify the base. Set traps in the ash, pile the stones, and bar the approach. If anyone comes through that dark, meet them with spear and blade, especially the paladin.

The goblins snap to it at once. Spear and labor both surge into motion, dragging timber toward the wall and kicking loose stones into a ragged line across the ground.

The Goblin Spearman

At once, master. We make the path hurt.

The Goblin Laborer

The Goblin Laborer

We will block the way. No one gets easy feet on this hill.

Ellowicous’s staff flares a dull green pulse against the ash, and the Black Book answers with a colder shiver. A gust sweeps through the dead branches, rattling the new barricade pieces before they settle.

Good. Let the tower learn teeth.

The goblins pause only a breath at that voice, then keep working, faces tight with fear and obedience. Somewhere beyond the wall, a heavier footstep crunches through cinder, close enough to make the first trap worth setting now.
