The tavern door opens, letting in a stripe of late sunlight. A tall adult man steps inside, broad-shouldered beneath travel-worn steel, with dark stubble, wind-tangled hair, and a weathered cloak.

He closes the door without a word. Dust clings to his boots, and the quiet weight of his stillness makes the widowed mother’s hand tighten around her apron.

Maudie

Maudie

Welcome to the Golden Hare. If you’re looking for a room or supper, I can help you with either.

Her practiced welcome falters beneath his unreadable stare. He does not approach the counter. His attention has already settled past her, on Alerie beside the stove and her neatly bandaged fingertip.

Maudie

Maudie

Mara would expect me to keep smiling. Please, let him order something ordinary.

The mercenary’s gaze drops briefly to the cloth around Alerie’s finger, then returns to her face. His expression remains brooding, but his attention is unmistakably deliberate.

Maudie

Maudie

Sir? The stew will be ready shortly, if that’s what brought you in.

“*Alerie glanced up and cocked an eyebrow before gesturing to the widowed mother with her knife.* "Maudie is speaking to you. She's at the counter not me. If your in my tavern you speak to my workers." *Alerie said putting some cut up greens into the stew and placing the top onto it.*”

Maudie is speaking to you. She's at the counter, not me. If you're in my tavern, you speak to my workers.

Alerie folds the cut greens into the stew and settles the lid over the pot. Steam curls around her bandaged finger as Maudie goes still behind the counter.

the mercenary

the mercenary

I heard her. I chose not to answer her.

The admission lands harder than a raised voice. Maudie’s welcome disappears, replaced by guarded silence, while the mercenary keeps his attention fixed on Alerie.

I came for the woman who knows how to keep a room from falling apart. I did not come for a serving girl’s courtesy.

Maudie

Maudie

He is trying to make her choose between defending me and keeping his business.

Maudie lowers her eyes and reaches for a stack of bowls, withdrawing from the exchange. The mercenary’s refusal leaves the counter unattended and the kitchen tense.

“"Right. That'd be me I suppose. You've heard what everyone says then while you've been travelling?" *She asked moving to help maudie carefully offering her the ladle from the stew so she could serve herself and her son food.* *Alerie turned her attention to the Mercenary.* "If I'm going to help you I'd like you to apologize for being rude to Maudie first."”

SUCCESS (Great Charm, rolled +1)

Alerie

Alerie

Right. That would be me, I suppose. You’ve heard what everyone says while you’ve been travelling?

Alerie moves beside Maudie and carefully offers her the ladle. Maudie accepts it, serving steaming stew into bowls for herself and her son.

Alerie

Alerie

If I’m going to help you, I’d like you to apologize to Maudie first for being rude.

the mercenary

the mercenary

I’ve heard that you feed people who cannot repay you, and that you make fools twice your size mind their manners.

The mercenary studies Maudie, then the ladle in her hand. His jaw tightens before he finally steps toward the counter.

the mercenary

the mercenary

Maudie, I was rude. You offered me service, and I answered with contempt. You have my apology.

Maudie

Maudie

Accepted. Sit down, then. If you’re here for supper, you can have it with the rest of us.

“*Alerie nodded firmly and moved to the small boy behind the counter who looked similar to maudie, she lifted him up and let him look into the pot of stew.* "Why did you come all of this way just for my tavern? not just for the free food I hope. We aren't a boarding house, it's for less fortunate folk who truly can't afford it. You're dressed near head to toe in iron and mercenaries aren't sponsored by kings." *She said looking over at the mercenary.* "So tell me why you're here."”

Alerie nods firmly, then steps behind the counter. Maudie’s small son, a tousle-haired boy in a patched blue shirt, reaches up without hesitation, and Alerie lifts him to see the simmering pot.

Alerie

Alerie

Why come all this way just for my tavern? Not only for free food, I hope. This is for people who truly cannot afford it, and mercenaries are not sponsored by kings. Tell me why you’re here.

The boy peers into the fragrant stew, safe against Alerie’s arm. Maudie watches the mercenary now, her hand resting protectively on the counter.

the mercenary

the mercenary

No king sponsors me. I take contracts, and this one brought me to Briarhollow with a sealed letter from someone who knows you.

the mercenary

the mercenary

The letter says the Golden Hare is being pressured to sell. It says Maudie and her boy may lose their home before winter.

Maudie’s face pales. The mercenary removes a folded, weather-stained letter from inside his cloak and places it on the counter, between them.

the mercenary

the mercenary

I came to offer protection, not charity. But after hearing you speak, I suspect you will want to know who is applying the pressure before accepting either.

“"I haven't heard anything about selling my tavern. I'm not sure who you've heard that from, but they're lying to you. We make plenty of coin to keep our doors open." *Alerie said angrily, her finger jabbing towards him like an accusation.*”

SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled +0)

Alerie

Alerie

I haven't heard anything about selling my tavern. Whoever told you that is lying. We make plenty of coin to keep our doors open.

Alerie jabs a finger toward him, anger sharpening her voice. The boy shifts against her arm, and Maudie quickly steadies the bowl before it spills.

the mercenary

the mercenary

Then you have been kept in the dark, not cheated by your books. I believe you about the coin.

the mercenary

the mercenary

The letter came from the village land office. Its clerk claims someone presented an offer for this property and warned that refusal would bring trouble before winter.

He turns the weather-stained page and points to a cramped signature beneath the seal. A smear of stew darkens the corner where Alerie’s wet hand brushed it.

the mercenary

the mercenary

You are right to accuse me of repeating a lie as fact. I should have verified it before frightening your workers. But the warning itself is real.

If someone is trying to take the Golden Hare, keeping quiet will not protect us.

“"Who signed this? Oberon? Martin?" *She asked yanking the page from his hands and looking over it. Panic set in, this was a family property where she'd lived her whole life, where she'd planned to raise her own children.* "Tell me the names or get out and starve."”

Alerie yanks the page from his hands and scans the cramped mark, panic tightening her grip. This is her family property, her whole life pressed into weather-stained paper.

the mercenary

the mercenary

Neither. The signature is Edrin Vale, acting clerk at the land office. The offer itself names no buyer.

The page gives a soft tear beneath Alerie’s fingers. The lower corner separates, taking part of the seal with it and leaving the document incomplete.

the mercenary

the mercenary

And if you throw me out, you lose the only witness who carried this warning here. I will not be bullied into inventing certainty.

Maudie

Maudie

Alerie, please. Don’t let him make you choose between your temper and the truth. We need to know who Edrin Vale serves.

Keep the torn page. Tomorrow, I can take you to the land office. You can ask Vale yourself, with your books and your witnesses present.

Alerie stares at the crumpled page, eyes faintly glossy, then shoves it into a basket beneath the counter. She turns immediately to the steaming pot.

Alerie

Alerie

Take these two to their house then. I... I have a lot of things to gather.

With a deep breath, Alerie ladles the stew into several bowls and seals them beneath clean cloths. Maudie gathers bread while her son watches quietly.

the mercenary

I will take them home. No one will trouble them on the walk, and I will return directly afterward.

Maudie

Maudie

You heard her. Come along, little one. We’ll leave Alerie to gather whatever she needs.

The mercenary accepts the covered bowls without complaint, his large hands unexpectedly careful around the hot pottery. Maudie takes her son’s hand and moves toward the door.

the mercenary

the mercenary

When I return, bring your books. If Vale is pressuring you, we should know exactly what the tavern earns before you face him.

“*Alerie nodded and watched the three figures leave the tavern quietly. In the silence of the wood, the only sound now was the crackling fire, a sickeningly familiar sound she'd remembered hearing as a child every day never ending warmth that settled through the tavern. she leaned against the counter and covered her mouth as a quiet sob left her lips.*”

The Mercenary's Watchful Arrival

Alerie watches Maudie, her son, and the mercenary disappear beyond the tavern door. Their footsteps fade into the woods, leaving only the fire’s steady crackle.

The familiar warmth settles through the Golden Hare, but it carries the old ache of childhood, of long days beside a fire that never seemed to end.

Alerie leans against the counter and covers her mouth as a quiet sob escapes. The torn page remains hidden beneath the counter, its damaged seal pressing against her thoughts.

She stays there until the front door opens again. The mercenary steps inside alone, closes it softly, and sets his empty hands against the wood.

the mercenary

They are home safely. No one followed us, and Maudie has barred the door.

He notices her wet eyes but does not cross the room. His voice loses its guarded edge, leaving the fire to fill the careful space between them.

You do not have to face Vale tonight. But when you are ready, I will help you gather every book and every truth.
