The landing holds its breath. Livia remains braced at the stair’s edge, her bloodied hand keeping the crawling blood from crossing toward Brynn. The barrier rises slowly, no longer surging.

Mara Venn

Brynn, stay behind me. That is what the writ requires, if not what I want.

Brynn Calder

Brynn Calder

No. I have spent too long letting other people decide where I stand.

Brynn steps across the edge of Livia’s guard. She does not reach for the casket. Instead, she takes Livia’s bloodied hand in both of hers, careful and warm.

I called it loyalty because that was a word I could say in public. But it is more than that now. I think of you when I should be thinking of flight. I look for you before I look for the door.

Then let the silence hear something honest. Whatever waits beyond that seal is listening to every promise, but it cannot make one for you.

The sealed door gives no answer. The blood settles into a dark, gleaming wall below it. For a moment, the hall is simply quiet, with Brynn’s hands still around Livia’s and Mara watching without raising her writ.

Brynn Calder

If you will let me, tell me what you want me to understand.

Free Brynn from the blood

Brynn’s question barely leaves her lips before the blood wall answers. Thin strands peel from its surface and loop around her wrists, tightening as they draw her toward the sealed door.

I did not tell you everything. The casket has been calling to me since the banquet hall. Not with words, with memories.

Her boots scrape across the stone. The barrier pulls harder whenever her gaze returns to Livia, as if her trust has become a tether.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

Brynn, look at me. Do not answer it.

Edric Vale

It is not the casket it wants. It is the promise between you.

The black hand beneath the baron’s seal flexes. Brynn’s heels reach the blood’s edge, and the pull threatens to drag her through.

Who wants Brynn arrested?

Livia searches the writ for the hand behind its order, but the crawling blood spills across the ink before the seal can be read.

Mara Venn

The authority is genuine. The name is not. Someone has scraped it away.

The question reaches the barrier instead. Black letters rise in the blood, crooked and incomplete, then wrap tighter around Brynn's wrists.

Brynn Calder

Brynn Calder

It is using my trust as a chain. Livia, do not let it make my answer for me.

Edric Vale

The door has taken the question. Now it wants a name from the marked one or the exile.

Brynn's heels cross the dark edge of the barrier. Mara tears the ruined writ in two, but the blood does not release its hold.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

The writ is useless now. Tell me where to pull, before it drags her through.
