Adventure of Clover Ewing 11

Max Exterminus breaks away from the shattered console and skitters toward the service lift, all panic and twitching limbs. The lab’s lights stutter over smoke, green goo, and the sealed seam where the rift used to burn.

Clover is still pinned at the edge of the mess, one boot sunk deep in the hardening slime. The lift shaft answers with a heavy clank, like something below is moving up faster than it should.

He slams one clawed hand against the lift controls, but the smashed security systems spit a burst of sparks and a warning chirp. The platform jolts, then hesitates, trapping him halfway between escape and attack.

The lift starts to rise anyway, grinding up toward him from the shaft below. Max whirls back, furious and cornered, with only Clover and the broken lab between him and whatever comes next.

Clover plants both boots and heaves. The sticky green goo gives with a thick, stringy pull, peeling off the heels in one ugly rip.

She gets free, but the release jerks her forward. One boot skids, and she has to catch herself against the broken floor before she can lunge again.

A bright smear of goo stays on the heels, stretching into strands that snap back to the floor.

Max whirls toward her in time to see the move, but the rising lift still crowds him from below, stealing the space he wanted.

The lab stays eerily quiet except for the shaft’s heavy clank and the hiss of dead sparks, while Clover is finally loose enough to move.

Clover springs forward the instant her boots clear, one hand snapping to the lift frame as the platform lurches higher. The jolt pulls Max Exterminus off balance, and his retreat turns into a hard stop at the edge.

The shaft grinds under them, metal shrieking, while the last strands of green goo still cling to Clover’s heels and the broken console spits a thin shower of sparks.

Max throws up his arms and braces himself against the rising platform, but there is nowhere left for him to run. The lift is carrying him away from the lab, not out of it.

Clover reaches the platform lip and drags herself onto it, forcing Max into a steel corner with the shaft yawning behind him.

The laboratory drops into a tense hush again, except for the clank of the lift as it seals him in and climbs out of reach.

The lift shudders higher, and his fury sharpens into something meaner. Max plants one hand on the frame, but his eyes flick past Clover to the gap above, measuring the last exit he still has.

A fresh spark pops from the broken console below, and a loose cable swings free in the white lab light. For one beat, the lift’s control panel blinks red, exposed and vulnerable.

Clover launches from the lift lip, both boots flashing down at the ruined console. The impact caves the housing in, and the red light dies in a shower of sparks.

The service lift jolts. Max stumbles hard against the frame as the platform shivers under him, the shaft answering with a deeper metallic clank.

Below, the broken controls spit one last burst, then go dark. The lab’s harsh white hush returns for a beat, broken only by the cable whipping beside the opening.

Clover lands awkwardly back on the lift edge, goo streaking her boots, but the console is wrecked and inert. Max is left pinned on the rising platform with nowhere easy to run.

The lift keeps climbing, carrying both of them toward the upper hatch as the last sparks fade.

Clover folds her arms through the green smear clinging to her suit and levels a cold look at Max. The lab hangs in a thin, white silence around them.

The lift gives a slow, grinding lurch upward. Max steadies himself with one hand on the frame, eyes flicking to Clover, then to the dark hatch above.

The loose cable whips beside the opening, and the shaft answers with another metallic clank from below. Clover stays planted, goo shining on her boots.

Max’s grin thins, more bitter than fearless, as the lift carries them higher into the hatch’s shadow. He waits there, trapped, watching Clover for her next move.

Clover commits to the opening and drives an uppercut up into Max’s jaw. The punch lands, but not cleanly enough to drop him.

Max’s head snaps back. His balance goes, then catches on the lift rail as the platform keeps grinding upward.

He staggers sideways, one hand flying to his face, the other scrabbling for purchase on the frame. The loose cable lashes between them in a hard, sparking whip.

Above, the hatch edge looms closer, and the lift shudders under both of them. The green residue on Clover’s boots holds fast, stealing her follow-through.

Clover hooks the sparking cable with both hands and yanks it across Max’s path. The shock snaps through his shoulder, and his knees buckle for a beat.

He slams against the lift frame instead of the hatch, stunned, one arm hanging numb while smoke threads off the cable in Clover’s grip.

The cable bites back, burning a line through Clover’s gloves and jolting her arms hard enough to sting to the bone.

The lift keeps grinding upward under them, and the broken lab below drops away into silence except for a metallic clank from the shaft.

The lift shudders, then lurches off-level. A side panel pops free, and a narrow maintenance gap opens between the frame and the shaft wall, just wide enough for a body to slip through if the timing is perfect.

He drives his numb shoulder into the gap, trying to force it wider, but the rising platform clips him back against the rail. Below, the metallic clanking swells into a heavy impact, and the whole lift jerks as if something beneath it has caught.

The upper hatch starts to grind shut ahead of them, while the loose cable spits harder, whipping sparks across the narrow space. Max reaches for the opening instead of Clover, and the lift’s climb suddenly stops with a violent bang.

Clover drives in on the freeze, and the lift’s stop gives her the opening. The cable jerks free from her hands as she launches forward, boots skidding in the green residue.

She slams Max back against the frame and snaps the cuffs onto his wrists before he can wrench the gap wider. Metal clicks loud in the hush.

Max strains once, then the cuffs bite shut and his arm drops uselessly. The loose cable spits a final spray of sparks beside them.

The lift stays dead in place, the upper hatch still grinding shut overhead, while the clanking below thuds closer and then stalls against the stop.

Clover has him, but the maintenance gap still gapes at his side, dark and narrow, and the sealed platform hums under both of them.
