Harold, Mira, and Tomas enter the abandoned dyehouse quarter beneath a sky the color of old iron. Silent vats and sagging roofs crowd the narrow lane.

The hooked sigil appears again beside a sealed dye-vat house, freshly chalked over peeling blue paint. A faint warmth seeps from beneath its door.

That mark is too fresh to be an old trade sign. Someone came through here recently, or wants us to believe they did.

A narrow thread of blue vapour slips through the threshold and curls along the wet stones before fading. It smells faintly of copper, bitter herbs, and heated glass.

A prepared device, perhaps, or a document sealed by spellwork. Either way, the failed meeting led us somewhere deliberate.

Mira Doss

If the sender wanted only to frighten us, they would not have left warmth behind.

The lane remains still. Behind the sealed door, something gives a soft ceramic tick, followed by a dim blue pulse beneath the threshold, waiting for Harold's next move.

Reveal what the blue device is

“Can I safely open this sealed door?”

NO, AND WORSE (Unlikely, rolled 95)

The sealed door answers the attempted opening with a sharp ceramic crack. Blue light races through the chalked sigil, and the warmth beneath the threshold surges into bitter, stinging vapor.

The vapor spreads across the lane instead of dispersing, clinging low around boots and stones. Within it, a second hooked mark burns briefly on the opposite wall, pointing toward the deeper dyehouse quarter.

Mira Doss

Mira Doss

That was a ward, not a lock. It knows we are here now, and it has told someone where to look.

Tomas Reed

Tomas Reed

Back from the threshold. The air is changing, and I hear movement beyond the vats.

A deep clatter answers from inside the sealed house, followed by several quick knocks against the far wall. The door remains shut, but its blue pulse now beats in time with the sounds.

Mira Doss

Mira Doss

The sender expected curiosity. Now the house is awake, and whatever is inside has been given our scent.

From the quarter ahead comes the scrape of hurried feet, too heavy for rats and too irregular for a single walker. The fresh sigil fades, leaving only the sealed door, the spreading vapor, and an approaching threat.

“I interact with it.”

Harold places his palm against the sealed door and follows the ward's rhythm through the blue chalk. The bitter vapor curls around his wrist without biting.

The ward is keyed to attention, not blood or touch. Its command can be answered.

He turns two fingers across the hooked mark and supplies the missing counter-sign in a thread of magic. The blue pulse slows, then folds inward and goes dark.

The vapor thins into harmless wisps. Inside the house, the ceramic ticking ceases, and the sealed door releases with a heavy wooden sigh.

Mira Doss

You broke its notice without breaking the ward. Can you tell what it was meant to report?

Beyond the open threshold, dark vats stand beneath sagging beams. A copper-lined basin bears the same hooked sigil, its surface etched with a narrow trail leading deeper inside.

Then we have entry, and the sender has lost their warning bell. Move before those footsteps reach us.

“I set a trap that will cause an explosion when they get to the door. Then move further in to find the blue device and then study it.”

SUCCESS (Superb Crafting, rolled +0)

The Blue Pulse Beneath the Door

Harold works quickly at the open threshold, arranging a compact arcane charge among the loosened stones and binding its trigger to the door's approach. The trap waits unseen beneath the blue residue.

He leads Mira and Tomas deeper into the dyehouse, past silent vats and hanging strips of stiffened cloth. Behind them, the warded entrance remains open, with the prepared trap ready for whoever reaches it.

If those footsteps follow, the doorway will answer for us. Keep moving, but do not lose sight of the walls.

At the rear chamber, Harold finds the blue device beneath a warped worktable: a palm-sized ceramic vessel wrapped in copper wire, its inner glow pulsing through tiny vents.

Mira Doss

Mira Doss

That is what fed the ward. The copper basin carried its signal through the house.

Harold studies the device without disturbing it. The copper winding is a signal path, the ceramic shell contains alchemical heat, and a narrow crystal core stores the command that awakened the door.

He identifies the device's purpose clearly: it listens for the hooked sigil's response, then sends a prepared warning through the dyehouse. Its command can be altered or safely removed with careful tools.

Harold lifts the ceramic vessel into the lantern glow and traces the copper winding without touching its crystal core. The command pattern mirrors the hooked sigil, but its final strokes are deliberately disguised.

The sender hid their identity in the command, but not their method.

Mira Doss

Mira Doss

Can you read anything useful from it, Harold? Even a place or a trade mark would give us somewhere to look.

Harold angles the crystal toward the basin's reflected blue light. A faint sequence appears inside it: three measured pulses, then a broken fourth, matching a notation used for dye consignments bound through the old river warehouses.

Tomas Reed

Tomas Reed

The river warehouses? That is a district, not a name. Whoever sent the letters knows how to hide behind commerce.

He tries to coax the remaining command from the crystal, but the disguised strokes collapse into cloudy fractures. The device loses its stored warning before revealing an identity, leaving repetition useless.

Beneath the fractured glow, one mark survives: a blue-dyer's tally notch paired with a warehouse number. It offers a concrete lead toward the river warehouses, while the sender's name remains hidden.
