The oath-breakers' footsteps fade beyond the broken arch. Ash settles over the chamber, and the blue furnace-fire lowers to a watchful glow around the silent hearth.

Then the black stone wall begins to hum. Fading crescent sigils tremble across its surface as a second pattern of silver marks kindles beneath the hearthstones.

The marks arrange themselves into cramped lettering, formed in the same severe hand as the silver-crescent letter. The warning shines upward through the stone: THE ROAD CLOSES FROM BELOW.

That hand. No, by the Ashen Road, that cannot be here. The letter was meant to warn you before the Foundry opened.

Mara goes pale and backs from the hearth, one hand hovering near his courier blade. Beneath the floor, something gives a slow, resonant knock.

Sella Dorn

Sella Dorn

I hear movement below us. Not settling stone. Something is testing the old foundations.

Sella lifts her hammer and turns toward the hearthstones. The hum deepens through the chamber, stirring loose ash into thin silver rings while the warning burns brighter.

“Kyrie will try and listen to determine what is on the other side.”

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

Kyrie lowers herself beside the hearthstones and stills her breathing. She presses her ear near the silver rings, listening past the hum, the ash, and the fading footsteps above.

Three heartbeats below, then a pause. Something is moving through a hollow passage.

The deep knock comes again, clearer through the stone. Beneath the chamber lies a vast sealed gallery, and something heavy is walking toward a barred foundation door.

Between each measured step, Kyrie catches a thinner sound: chains dragging over rock, followed by a breath that vibrates through the hearthstones.

Sella Dorn

Sella Dorn

What do you hear, Kyrie? Is it the road itself, or something trapped beneath it?

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

The warning said the road closes from below. If that thing reaches the foundation door, this chamber may become its entrance.

“Is the thing below bound to the Ashen Road?”

YES (Likely, rolled 33)

The next footfall strikes beneath them, and every silver ring answers. Hair-thin chains of light flare through the hearthstones, running downward into the sealed foundations.

The resonance reveals the truth: whatever walks below is bound to the Ashen Road itself. The chains are not restraints laid upon it, but the road's ancient warding oath made manifest.

Sella Dorn

Sella Dorn

Bound, then. Not merely hiding beneath the road. The Ashen Road carries its prison, and every ward-stone above is part of the chain.

The barred foundation door groans far below. Silver names awaken across its unseen surface, matching the dead wardens engraved on Kyrie's reforged key.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

The warning was not about a collapse. It meant the road would close itself to keep that thing from reaching the living routes.

Sella Dorn

Sella Dorn

If the oath still holds, the key may command the prison as surely as it commands the road.

“"Then is the ward-key a way to stop its approach entirely?"”

Then is the Ward-Key a way to stop its approach entirely?

Kyrie's question settles over the hearthstones. The Ward-Key at her hip answers with a single silver pulse, and the chains below draw taut through the foundations.

Sella Dorn

Sella Dorn

Yes. It can command the road to close the foundation door and seal that bound thing below. Its approach can be stopped entirely.

Sella kneels and traces the awakened names with one gloved finger. The letters shift beneath her touch, revealing the key's command is meant for the prison door, not the creature itself.

Sella Dorn

But the command must be given at the hearth, with the key turned toward the living routes. I cannot read the final warden-name in this light, so the exact rite remains uncertain.

Mara Venn

Then we have an answer, but not leisure. Every moment spent deciphering that last name gives the thing below another step toward the door.

The silver rings tighten across the hearthstones as another footfall reverberates below. The Ward-Key's teeth warm against Kyrie's hip, ready to command the road's ancient oath.

“I cast a spell to illuminate the last name, allowing Sella to be able to read it as I turn the ward-key to the living routes.”

Kyrie raises her lunar focus over the hearthstones. Silver radiance pours into the cramped lettering, gathering around the final warden-name until its buried strokes shine clear.

The spell strains through Kyrie's left hand, and numbness tightens across her fingers. She steadies the focus with her right hand while the hidden letters blaze above the silver rings.

Sella Dorn

Sella Dorn

There. I can read it now. Warden Halvek, last keeper of the foundation prison.

Kyrie draws the reforged Ward-Key from its loop and turns its three crescent teeth toward the living routes etched around the hearth. The key answers with a deep metallic tone.

Sella Dorn

Sella Dorn

That is the proper bearing. Hold it there, Kyrie. The road recognizes the living paths and the name of its final keeper.

Below, the bound thing takes another heavy step, but the silver chains surge taut instead of slackening. The unseen foundation door begins to close beneath the road.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

It stopped. The footsteps are fading below us, and the road is sealing the prison from the living routes.
