Augustus joins Klaus among the chapel’s fallen stones, lantern swinging from one hand and a pry bar resting against his shoulder. The household staff remain at the nearby road camp, tending horses and supplies.
Inside, the roofless chapel smells of wet stone and old ash. Beneath the cracked altar, fresh scrapes score the earth, and a shallow bootprint mars the dust.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
Someone has been here recently. Either our pilgrims were less devout than advertised, or another seeker reached the relic first.
Augustus wedges the pry bar beneath the altar’s broken edge and leans into it. Stone grinds against stone, revealing a narrow stairway descending into darkness.
The lantern light reaches only the first step. A worn holy emblem is carved there, its lines softened by countless hands or years of damp, while darkness waits below.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
There is our threshold. You have the stronger faith, Klaus, but I brought the better tool. Shall we see what lies beneath?
Augustus lowers the lantern toward the stairwell and holds position beside the opening, leaving the descent and its uncertain depths to Klaus’s decision.

Determine whether another seeker reached the relic chamber.
“"There don't seem to be any footprints leading down, just in this main chamber, I think perhaps someone was staying here but hasn't yet discovered this secret route." *I head down the stairs carefully.*”
SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +0)

Klaus Von Vanderbilt
There do not seem to be any footprints leading down, only in the main chamber. Perhaps someone stayed here but never discovered this route.
Klaus descends carefully, testing each damp step before shifting his weight. Halfway down, his boot slips on grit; his knee strikes stone, and a sharp pain travels through his leg, but he keeps his balance.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
Careful, Klaus. The chapel has already claimed one bruise from you today.
The stair ends in a low chamber beneath the altar. Augustus lowers the lantern beside Klaus, revealing bare walls, a dry clay floor, and a cold draft threading through unseen cracks.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
You were right about the footprints. Whoever lodged above never came this far, unless they knew how to leave no trace.
Lanternlight catches a shallow recess in the far wall, sealed by a plain stone slab. Dust lies undisturbed before it, while Klaus’s fresh boot marks end at the chamber floor.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
There is the first secret the chapel has kept from us. Shall we examine it together?
“"Of course, let us have a close look shall we?"”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

Klaus Von Vanderbilt
Of course. Let us have a close look, shall we?
Klaus borrows Augustus’s lantern and crouches before the recess. He studies the slab’s edges, the dust, and the softened carving around its frame.

Klaus Von Vanderbilt
The dust is undisturbed, but the slab does not fit as tightly as it appears.
Closer inspection reveals a narrow vertical seam and three shallow thumb-sized hollows beneath the holy emblem. One hollow bears a faint smear of fresh wax.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
Fresh wax, hidden catches, and no dust before the stone. Someone opened this recently, then sealed it again.
Klaus presses the lowest hollow while levering the slab’s edge with his fingers. A concealed latch gives softly, and the stone swings inward, exposing a small chamber beyond.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
Well found, old friend. There is a space behind it, and something wrapped in dark cloth rests inside.
Lanternlight enters the hidden chamber, catching the outline of a long narrow bundle on a stone shelf. The air smells faintly of wax and cold iron.

“*I lift the dark cloth and inspect the bundle without disturbing it.* "This must be the relic then."”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +1)

Klaus takes the lantern in one hand and lifts the dark cloth with the other, folding it back without shifting the bundle beneath. The fabric is cold and stiff with age.

Klaus Von Vanderbilt
This must be the relic then.
Beneath the cloth lies a narrow iron-bound reliquary, blackened but intact. A small silver cross is fixed to its lid, and a reddish-brown stain marks one corner of the metal.
Klaus studies the fittings without touching them. The reliquary bears no lock, yet its lid is sealed by a thin strip of dark wax impressed with a worn episcopal emblem.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
A relic, perhaps. But the wax is newer than the iron, and that stain is no mark of ordinary storage. Someone prepared it for concealment.
Augustus leans nearer, keeping his hands away. The lantern flame bends toward a crack behind the shelf, and a faint draft carries the dry scent of old parchment into the chamber.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
If it came from a bishop’s chapel, we should learn whose seal this was before we break it. Shall we carry it above and examine the cloth by daylight?
“"Yes, let's do that."”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Klaus Von Vanderbilt
Yes, let us carry it above and examine the cloth by daylight.
Klaus rewraps the reliquary without disturbing its seal. Augustus takes the lantern, and together they climb the damp stair, carrying the bundle carefully between them.
In the roofless chapel, pale afternoon light falls across the altar stones. Klaus spreads the dark cloth on a dry slab while Augustus holds the reliquary nearby.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
The weave is coarse, but the thread is costly. This was not wrapped by a common pilgrim. Look at the inner fold.
Daylight reveals faint red stitching along the cloth’s inner hem: a bishop’s crozier crossed by a narrow sword. Beneath it, almost erased, are three Latin letters.

Klaus Von Vanderbilt
The stitching predates the fresh wax, but the cloth was handled recently.

Augustus Schmellenmeier
A church seal joined to a sword. Whoever hid this wanted faith and authority recognized together. We should keep the reliquary sealed until we learn those letters.
