The Mayor claws through the wet grave soil, desperate to flee the ring of judging dead.

Then the earth bulges upward and splits. A stone-cold hand rises first, then a helm crusted with old clay, and the Grave Warden hauls himself from below.

The Grave Warden

The Grave Warden

Enough. You churn holy ground like a midden pile.

He towers over the Mayor, bone-white eyes fixed on the churned earth, not the trembling man. His grip tightens on a moss-dark spear.

The Grave Warden

The Grave Warden

I do not come for your politics. I come for the soil you have disturbed, and the sleepers you have insulted.

The spirits hold their circle, silent now. The Hooded Matron turns toward the intruder, while the Mayor freezes in the mud, caught between judgment and worse.

Harkon Devillain

Harkon Devillain

He guards the graveyard itself. That makes him a threat.

Harkon steps into the gap, sword lowered but ready, placing himself between the Grave Warden and the mud-caked Mayor. The dead man’s glare shifts to him at once.

Harkon Devillain

Harkon Devillain

His complaint is for the graves, not the man.

The Grave Warden

The Grave Warden

At last, one with enough sense to stand where the harm was done. Speak, then. Why should the soil forgive you?

The Hooded Matron stills, listening. Behind Harkon, the Mayor sinks lower, the weak violet stain under him flickering like a dying bruise.

The Mayor

The Mayor

I meant no grave harm. I only wanted power. I did not think the earth would answer.

The Spirit with a Cracked Brow

The Spirit with a Cracked Brow

You thought silence was yours to buy. That is always the first lie.

The Grave Warden

The Grave Warden

Then let the price be plain. The broken ground must be made whole, and the living man must feel what his deceit has cost.

The Warden angles his spear toward the churned mound, not Harkon, as if waiting to hear whether mercy or penalty will answer him.

I offer myself in the Mayor's place

Harkon steps forward and offers himself in the Mayor’s place. The Grave Warden’s spear lowers a fraction, its moss-dark tip turning toward Harkon instead of the trembling man in the mud.

Then you will answer for both the breach and the coward who made it.

The Mayor flinches as the offer lands, and the weak violet stain under him gutters once, like a bruise pressed hard. The Hooded Matron watches Harkon with quiet approval.

The Spirit with a Cracked Brow

The Spirit with a Cracked Brow

A living shield. Rare thing, these days.

The Grave Warden sets the spear butt into the wet earth. He does not strike. Instead, he measures Harkon in silence, as if weighing a vow against a broken grave.

The Grave Warden

The Grave Warden

If you stand in his place, then you take his burden. Break a grave, and you mend one. Disturb the rest, and you keep vigil until it is earned back.

Mud climbs Harkon’s boot as he shifts into place. A dark smear of grave soil marks his shin, but the line between the Warden and the Mayor holds.
