Across the fast brown water, the colossal crawler remains motionless. One hooked limb presses into the gravel, while pale ridges along its skull brighten with each buried tremor.

The light travels from ridge to ridge, fades, then returns in the same order. Between pulses, tiny stones shift beneath the bank below the crawler's head.

Garrett remains alone on this side of the river, separated from the creature by swift water and the distance of the crossing. Nothing else moves in the trees.

The crawler lowers its skull until the mineral ridges nearly touch the gravel. Its attention follows the repeating vibration downward, toward something concealed beneath roots and wet soil.

A faint answering shimmer appears under the riverbank, briefly outlining a buried shape before mud and stones cover it again. The creature watches Garrett, then the hidden glow.
