Yui reaches the manga aisle as Rosemary Cedar, a slim young adult woman with curly dark-brown hair, pink cardigan, and white skirt, plants herself before a cluster of teenagers. Behind her, Stella Nabokov’s long blonde hair spills across the floor while she grips a manga volume to her chest.

Six teenagers crowd the narrow aisle, phones raised and faces bright with outrage. Their overlapping shouts ricochet off the high shelves, while every nearby reader pauses to watch.

Rosemary Cedar

Rosemary Cedar

Everyone was already arguing before I called for help. Please stop crowding the aisle and let me explain.

The Teenagers

She attacked first! We were just trying to get the book back!

Stella Nabokov

Stella Nabokov

I am defending it! They were going to vandalize the pictures, and the book was very clearly asking me to help!

Rosemary keeps one hand lifted between Stella and the phones, careful not to touch either side. A teenager near the front angles their camera toward Yui, hoping she will become evidence.

Rosemary Cedar

Rosemary Cedar

Yui, could you stand with me for a moment? Nobody is listening, and the readers are waiting.

Yui Nagashima

Stella, can you explain what the book asked you to do?

Stella Nabokov

Stella Nabokov

It asked me to protect the pictures from being scribbled over. Very politely, at first.

Stella loosens her grip just enough to show the manga’s cover and several untouched pages. Her expression shifts from defensive excitement to earnest concentration.

Then it said, “Find the loud people and make them stop.” I thought that meant I should grab the book before they ruined it.

Rosemary Cedar

Rosemary Cedar

That explains why you pulled it away, but it does not explain why everyone is shouting.

The Teenagers

Because she said the book was talking! That is not an explanation.

Stella Nabokov

Stella Nabokov

It was a figurative conversation, probably. But I still stopped the vandalism, so the book’s request worked.

Earn Rosemary's trust by handling the library incident

“I make everyone sign a crudely written agreement form not to validate the manga. A form I hastefully wrote on a sheet of printer paper.”

Yui lays out the agreement in brisk, crooked handwriting and reaches for the printer paper, but the sheet is not where she left it. The nearby return cart is empty.

The teenagers, six human adolescents—three girls and three boys with varied skin tones, mixed dark and light hair, and casual jackets and sneakers— lean closer, phones lowering as the proposed rules become clear. Stella watches the missing paper search with intense concentration, still keeping the manga against her chest.

Rosemary Cedar

Rosemary Cedar

I understand the idea, but we cannot sign a form that is not here. Also, nobody should be pressured into signing one in the aisle.

The Teenagers

We are not signing anything about the book talking. We will sign that we did not damage it.

Stella Nabokov

Stella Nabokov

That is almost the same agreement, except it leaves out the most interesting part.

Rosemary points toward the service desk, where a library incident form and a working pen wait beside the catalog terminal. The teenagers exchange glances, and one steps away from the aisle.

Rosemary Cedar

Rosemary Cedar

Let us document what everyone actually saw, separately. That gives us something usable, even without your missing agreement.

“I make everyone sign a crudely written agreement form not to validate the manga. A form I hastefully wrote on a sheet of printer paper.”

SUCCESS (Great Charm, rolled +2)

Rosemary ducks behind the service desk and returns with a fresh sheet of printer paper and a blue pen. She places both beside Yui, clearing a small writing space.

Yui hastily rewrites the agreement in crooked block letters: nobody will claim the manga is literally speaking, and nobody will damage its pages. She turns the paper around for inspection.

Rosemary Cedar

Rosemary Cedar

That is clear enough to record, and it does not ask anyone to agree about what they experienced.

Stella Nabokov

Stella Nabokov

I can sign that. I will not validate the manga in writing, even though it made an excellent request.

The teenagers cluster around the desk, reading the two rules twice. One passes the pen along, and six quick signatures appear beneath the statement without further argument.

The Teenagers

Fine. We sign that we did not damage it, and that we will not say the book literally talked.

Rosemary dates the page and adds the aisle location. Stella releases the manga to her at last, while the signed form rests safely beside the incident report.
