The Mark Seeks a Shape

The purified chamber remains still beneath the well. Lisa’s pale palm-mark throbs once, answering the distant iron key with a faint, metallic echo.

Above, the stairway stays open. The village outcast waits beside the broken well, while Mara Venn remains near the hollow, newly freed but unable to leave the place that remembers her.

The key is quiet now. That does not mean it is harmless. It remembers the door it almost became.

Leave it where it lies, and someone will find it. Carry it below, and the chamber may learn another name.

In the chamber’s center, Oren Vale’s stone gives a soft internal knock. The mark on Lisa’s palm darkens at its edge, as though the severed binding still seeks a shape.

You broke what held me. Now the mark holds something of you. Decide carefully, priestess.

The open stair offers passage upward, toward the key and the waiting dead. The silent chamber offers the stone, the mark, and whatever knowledge purification left behind.

Determine what has awakened Mara Venn

“I consult my occult tome to learn about the mark.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Occult Lore, rolled -2)

The Mark Seeks a Shape

Lisa opens her occult tome beside Oren Vale’s stone. The pages turn beneath airless pressure, stopping at a diagram of a severed binding and a hand marked by its residue.

The text identifies the pale mark as a witness-brand, not a possession. It records the broken evil and lets its bearer recognize any surviving fragment of the old door.

The mark is a warning, and a record. It does not own me.

The final annotation explains the cost: knowledge taken from the tome consumes one remembered prayer. As Lisa finishes reading, the words of a childhood blessing vanish from her memory.

Then it is finished. The lie has no anchor, and the mark has a name you can withstand.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn

I remember myself now. That is enough. Let the village remember the truth.

Lisa closes the tome. Above, dawn thins the ash over the well, while Mara’s presence fades from the hollow and the village outcast begins the long walk home.

The Mark Seeks a Shape

Lisa closed the tome and let the iron key rest beneath the soil, its answering pull fading from her palm.

I am not its vessel. I am the witness, and I choose what I carry.

The mark cooled. Somewhere beyond the trees, Mara’s last footstep became part of the ordinary dark.

Lisa left the hollow with Oren Vale’s stone and the knowledge etched into her, though the memory of a childhood blessing had gone forever. The broken evil had no master in her, only a witness who had refused to become its shape. Behind her, the forest settled into silence, and Mara Venn was finally free.
