The moonlit bridge spills onto a narrow road and a small shrine of river stones. Silver threads tremble from its roof, each left by a traveler asking the waters for safe passage.

The orc mercenary stops willingly beneath the shrine’s worn arch. Blue light from the golden leaf still curls around Nico’s hand, carrying the cadence like a breath held between worlds.

Here, then. Play the cadence or sing it, elf. Let the shrine witness that I have received what we bargained for.

The golden leaf answers the shrine’s river stones.

My name is Grakka Ironvein. I serve no crown. I took the library contract from a dying archivist who promised payment for Mara’s living voice, not her death and not a copy of her song.

He sets one scarred hand upon the shrine, careful not to disturb the silver offerings. His iron-gray braids stir in the river wind as the golden leaf brightens between them.

The archivist believed Mara’s voice could name the heir the prophecy lost. I sought the song to break the contract’s curse, but whether you give it now remains your choice.

Then I will sing the song myself, and let the shrine judge whether my voice carries Mara’s living cadence.

Nico lifts the golden leaf and sings. The melody leaves him clear and whole, its hidden cadence unfolding into the river wind without becoming a copy of Mara’s voice.

The shrine’s silver threads ring together. River stones glow beneath the water, and a luminous current curls around the arch before settling into the leaf’s golden surface.

The shrine accepts it. Not Mara’s voice, but the living song carried faithfully through another throat. The contract has what it demanded.

A dark mark shaped like a broken chain rises from Grakka’s wrist and flakes away into ash. He watches it vanish, then lowers his scarred hand from the shrine.

You have freed me, Nico Lovecraft. I will not call that debt payment. If you seek the heir’s truth, I will walk beside you until the road divides.

The golden leaf folds itself along its hidden seam, warm and quiet in Nico’s hand. Beyond the shrine, the river-road gleams beneath the stars, open toward whatever waits beyond the library.

“"Then let us walk Ironvien, the road still calls for more adventures to be had"”

Then let us walk, Ironvein. The road still calls, and more adventures await us.

Nico turns from the shrine and steps onto the river-road. Starlight gathers along the water, while the folded golden leaf rests warm in his hand.

Ironvein will do. And yes, elf, the road has more in it than old contracts and dead prophecies.

Grakka falls into step beside him, his scale coat whispering with each stride. He leaves the shrine’s arch behind without looking back.

Tell me, Nico. When you speak of adventures, do you seek treasure, answers, or the people who guard both?

The road bends through silver grass toward distant hills. River mist trails behind them, and the shrine’s last chime fades into the wide, welcoming night.
