The override key turns. Somewhere under the floor, old motors wake with a low, hungry thrum. The heavy maintenance hatch loosens, and a thin strip of cold air leaks up from below.

That hatch goes to the cache route. If we want the boots, this is it.
The Stranger keeps low beside the open control panel, flashlight angled down to avoid the dark side lane. The scraping from there answers with a sharper, closer drag through the vents.
Rex
The maintenance map marks a lower passage under the workshop.
A vibration runs through the concrete. Dust sifts from the hatch frame. The facility is awake now, and the path to the boot cache is open, but only for a moment.

Rex drops onto the lower step and the Stranger settles opposite him in the hatch glow, both of them seated amid tagged boxes and scuffed concrete. The boot route opens beneath their feet, narrow and cold.

Rex swings one boot up, then the other, resting them where the Stranger can see the thick worn leather and creases. The Stranger mirrors him, lifting their own boots into view.

You really do notice boots first.

These are old route boots, maintenance crew issue. I kept them because nobody else cared.
Rex angles his own soles closer, and the Stranger studies the stitching, the wear, the shape of the toe. Dust trembles down around them, and the machines below keep breathing through the floor.
