The chamber settles after the bell’s great note. Dust drifts from the sealed arch, veiling its fresh runes, but the stone remains shut. Above, the stranger stays at the stairwell threshold, keeping watch over the hall.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

Your palm is reddened. Take water, and let me bind it before the bell leaves a deeper mark.

The guildmaster sets a clay cup and a strip of clean linen on the bell’s stone base. Her broad shoulders ease only slightly as another faint knock sounds behind the sealed arch.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

The stranger owes this guild more than coin. Years ago, she led hunters to a refuge we had sworn to protect, believing the enemy’s promise that the danger would pass us by.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

It did not. Three wardens died, and she vanished before judgment. The mark brought her back to our door, whether by guilt, necessity, or both.

Spencer

Spencer

The water smells faintly of mint; the sealed arch is newer than the surrounding stone.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

You found her, and you broke the claim. What do you actually want from this guild now, Spencer?

“defeat the enemy themselves”

Spencer

Spencer

The sealed arch is newer than the chamber, and the enemy's listening place lies beyond it.

Spencer leaves the cup untouched and advances on the sealed arch. He raises his reddened hand toward the fresh runes, intent on breaking whatever enemy's presence still clings to the guild.

The runes flare before his fingers reach them. A black likeness of the crooked shadow surges from the stone and wraps his forearm, cold pressure driving him to one knee.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

Do not strike it. That is not the enemy itself, but a listening shape. Force will only give it more of your name.

Spencer tears free, but the red welt on his palm darkens into a thin branching mark. The sealed arch unlocks with a grinding click, revealing no passage, only a narrow stone basin.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

It has taken a likeness of you. Until that mark is washed away, the arch will answer to your touch and betray every threshold you cross.

Above the stair, the stranger calls down, her controlled voice suddenly strained. The basin fills with black water, making a direct assault useless and leaving the guild's hidden ward exposed.

Spencer plunges his marked hand into the narrow basin. The black water closes over the branching lines, cold as buried stone, and the runes flare.

For one breath, the mark pales. Then the water climbs against his wrist, drawing a dark reflection from his skin into the basin’s depths.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

Withdraw it. The basin is not washing the likeness away. It is learning the shape beneath it.

Spencer pulls free. The branching mark remains, but its lines have shifted into a precise pattern matching the sealed arch. The black water settles clear.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

Your attempt changed the lock. The arch no longer answers to your touch alone. It will open only when that pattern is given a name.

the stranger

the stranger

Then the listening place has taken more than a trace. Do not speak any name into that basin until we know whose voice it obeys.

The fresh runes dim, leaving the basin’s clear surface reflecting Spencer’s marked hand. Beyond it, the sealed arch waits without another sound.

Spencer studies the clear basin instead of touching it again. Beneath his reflected hand, the shifted pattern rearranges into concentric lines and a small, unmistakable map.

Spencer

Spencer

The curse comes from beneath the guild, not from the stranger.

The reflection deepens, showing foundations below the chamber, then a buried well of black stone. A thin thread of darkness descends from it toward the arch’s runes.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

The source is under us. The old enemy is listening through a root-vault beneath the guild, sealed before my predecessor’s time.

the stranger

the stranger

That is where the mark first answered me. I thought the voice came from beyond the eastern marches, but it was below every threshold I crossed.

The basin reveals one final detail: a stone door beneath the guild’s oldest foundation, bearing the same pattern now etched into Spencer’s palm. Its inner side is open.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

You have found the curse’s source, Spencer. The root-vault lies beneath the old cistern, and your altered mark can guide us there without waking the arch.

“find help to go to the root vault”

FAILURE (Fair Persuasion, rolled -3)

Spencer turns from the basin toward the guildmaster and the stranger, seeking aid for the descent beneath the old cistern. His marked palm remains raised between them.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

I will guide you to the cistern, but I cannot enter the root-vault. The guild’s oath is part of its seal.

the stranger

the stranger

And I cannot follow. The mark knows me. If I cross that threshold, it may wake the listening place before you reach its door.

The guildmaster reaches for the linen, then stops short. A faint duplicate of Spencer’s pattern has appeared across her knuckles, while the stranger’s collar darkens without flame.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

There is your answer. The vault has already counted us as guides, and it is extending the likeness through anyone who offers direct passage.

the stranger

the stranger

Take the map alone. We can give directions from here, but our hands would make the door answer to the enemy.

The basin’s concentric lines contract, erasing the route to the cistern and leaving only a single symbol beneath Spencer’s palm. Help remains available as counsel, not companionship.

Reach the root-vault

The single symbol beneath Spencer’s palm splits like a seed. Far above, every guild bell rings once, though none of their ropes move.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

That is not a summons. The guild has been recognized as a threshold.

Stone groans beneath the chamber. Behind the sealed arch, the basin drains upward into darkness, revealing a narrow stair spiraling below the old cistern.

the stranger

the stranger

Do not descend yet. The listening place has changed its direction. It is reaching toward the guild, not waiting beneath it.

A thin black line creeps from the arch across the floor, stopping just short of Spencer’s boots. Wherever it passes, dust settles into tiny written names.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

The root-vault is opening a road upward. If it reaches the common hall, every person sheltering there may become part of its map.

the stranger

the stranger

Take the stair, but do not seek the voice. Find the inner door and close it before the old enemy learns this hall completely.

“find the inner door”

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -3)

The Stranger’s Buried Betrayal

Spencer follows the revealed stair beneath the old cistern, keeping his marked palm above the stone. The pattern guides him through damp darkness toward a chamber below.

The stair winds past roots turned to pale stone. His boot dislodges a pebble, and its clatter rolls downward, carrying his presence into the buried vault.

Spencer

Spencer

The mark points inward, not toward the voice.

At the stair’s end, the pattern on Spencer’s palm shines faintly and reveals an inner door set within black rock, its seams sealed without hinges or handle.

He presses his marked hand to the stone. The door opens inward at once, but a sharp line of cold cuts across his palm, deepening the old welt and leaving blood on the threshold.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

You found it. Do not answer anything you hear beyond that door. Close it from within, then return by the marked stair.

Beyond the open door lies a narrow inner passage descending beneath the foundations. No voice calls from it yet, but the black stone seems to listen as Spencer enters.

“close the door”

SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -3)

The Stranger’s Buried Betrayal

Spencer turns within the narrow passage and grips the inner edge of the black stone door. The threshold chills his marked palm as he draws it shut.

The door seals with a heavy crack that travels through the foundations. Dust sifts from the ceiling, and the passage beyond falls silent.

The cold line across Spencer’s palm opens again, leaving a fresh bead of blood and draining some strength from his hand. The sealed door remains firm.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

It is closed. Good. Keep the mark against the stair stones, and the vault should not find the hall through you.

From beyond the stone, the guildmaster’s voice reaches him faintly. No answering voice follows, only a dull settling beneath the floor.

the stranger

the stranger

Do not linger in there. Return by the path you used, before the door remembers more of you than your hand.

The marked stair waits behind Spencer, its pale roots catching the dim glow from his palm. The inner door is shut, and the listening dark is cut off.

Spencer turns from the sealed inner door and climbs the marked stair. Pale stone roots guide his palm upward, while the cold in his hand gradually loosens.

The stair carries him beneath the old cistern and back into the guild’s lower chamber. The basin remains clear, its surface undisturbed beneath the sealed arch.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

You are out. Keep your hand raised until the mark stops shining, then let me bind the cut.

Spencer reaches the chamber floor. The pattern on his palm dims to a faint red line, and the pressure beneath the foundations settles without following him.

the stranger

the stranger

The hall still stands, and no new names have appeared in the dust. That is more mercy than I expected from your descent.

The guildmaster offers the clean linen again, this time without hesitation. Above, muted voices return to the common hall as the guild’s bells fall silent.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

The vault is shut for now. We can study the mark here, where its road ends, without calling the old enemy closer.

“have the guildmaster and stranger study the mark”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +2)

Spencer lowers himself beside the bell’s stone base and presents his marked palm. The guildmaster washes the cut while the stranger watches from the stair threshold.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

Hold it beneath the lamp. Do not close your fingers. The lines are not ink, and they are not merely a scar.

The guildmaster trims the linen into narrow strips and lays a bronze viewing lens over Spencer’s hand. Through it, the red pattern divides into branching paths.

the stranger

the stranger

The innermost branch matches the root-vault door. The outer lines are newer. They formed when the listening shape touched you.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

And this small break here is important. The mark cannot complete itself while the inner door remains sealed. It has a boundary now.

The stranger steps no closer, keeping her marked collar away from Spencer’s hand. She studies the pattern by reflected lamplight as the guildmaster binds the wound.

the stranger

the stranger

It is a guide, not a leash. If we keep it covered and avoid the vault, the old enemy cannot use it to open that road again.
