Spencer arrives beneath the adventurers guild's carved lintel as the crowded common hall falls abruptly quiet. Tankards hover near mouths; every chair seems to turn toward him.

A gaunt elderly man crouches beneath the notice board, wrapped in patched brown wool. One cloudy eye and one startlingly clear eye fix on something beyond Spencer.

The stranger has just entered: a tall middle-aged woman in a weather-dark green cloak, iron-gray braid over one shoulder, and a black enemy-mark stitched at her collar.

I seek the guildmaster. Tell me where I may find them.

No one answers. The stranger's gloved hand rests near her sword, not drawing it, while the silence tightens around the old mark.

You there. Do not look behind you. Listen to me, and listen quickly.

That one carries your enemy's sign. The guildmaster is not the danger. Something followed her through the door.

The guild doors slam shut without a hand touching them. Beneath the lintel, the torch flames bend inward, their light drawn toward the stranger's shadow.

the stranger

Everyone away from the entrance. Now.

Her shadow lengthens across the floor, sliding against the torchlight. It rises behind her in a thin, crooked shape with antler-like forks and no face.

the beggar

There. It has found the mark. Do not let it touch the stones beneath you.

the stranger

the stranger

Old man, name yourself. What wards this hall?

the beggar

the beggar

None that can hold what followed you. But the guildmaster keeps a bell below, forged before your enemy had a name.

The faceless shape bends toward Spencer, though its feet remain joined to the stranger's shadow. Somewhere beneath the common hall, a single muffled bell answers.

Spencer

I will find the guildmaster.

Spencer crosses toward the stairwell beneath the hall. The faceless shadow stretches after him, and a cold pressure clamps briefly around his wrist before releasing.

the stranger

the stranger

The lower stair. Quickly. Take the bell rope, and do not let that thing cross the threshold.

He reaches the stairwell and descends into a stone chamber beneath the guild. A broad-shouldered elderly woman waits beside an ancient bronze bell, her white hair bound in blue cord.

You came through the hall while it was marked. That makes you either brave, desperate, or already chosen.

The bell rope is warm, though the chamber is cold.

The guildmaster places the rope in Spencer's hand. Far above, the crooked shadow presses against the stairwell stones, while the old bell waits beneath his grip.

Spencer

Why were you looking for the guildmaster in the first place?

His question carries up the stairwell. Above, the stranger answers through the pressure of the crooked shadow, her voice controlled but sharpened by urgency.

the stranger

the stranger

To ask for the bell. My enemy marked me three nights ago, and every ward I crossed weakened. The guildmaster alone knows how to sever it.

the stranger

the stranger

I came because the mark is not merely tracking me. It is learning the names and thresholds of everyone who shelters me.

The warm rope suddenly tightens across Spencer's palm, biting a red welt into the skin before slackening. Above, the shadow recoils from the stairwell stones.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

She speaks truth. The mark belongs to an enemy older than this guild, and the bell can break its claim, but only while its bearer holds the rope.

the stranger

the stranger

Now you know why I sought her. Ring it, and I will answer for what follows.

Spencer pulls the warm rope down. The ancient bronze bell answers with one immense note, and the stone chamber shudders around him.

The sound climbs through the guild, sweeping dust from the rafters. Above, the crooked shadow collapses flat against the stairwell wall.

the stranger

the stranger

Hold it steady. The bell has taken the mark's attention.

A black thread of light tears free from the stranger's collar and whips down the stairs. It strikes the bell's rim, where silver fire consumes it without smoke.

the guildmaster

the guildmaster

There. The claim is severed, but the bell has shown us where its master listens.

the stranger

the stranger

Then I can finally confront the old enemy. Guildmaster, tell me what lies beyond that listening place.

The bell's fading tone gathers into a distant, deliberate knock beneath the floor. Dust trickles from a sealed arch behind the guildmaster, revealing fresh runes.
