The leaning cedar groans above the broken stones as the amber fissure widens. Light spills across roots and rubble, revealing a narrow passage descending beneath the foundation.

Rex

Rex

Grrrrr...

Rex presses against the hood's edge, orange muzzle aimed toward the passage. Warwick paws at a scrap of familiar cloth, then freezes as chains drag across stone below.

Warwick

Warwick

Whine.

The failing ward flickers through the foundation, each pulse weaker than the last. Dust trickles into the amber crack, and the dragging grows nearer before stopping abruptly.

A cold breath rises from below despite the warm glow. The scrap in Warwick's paws bears the same blue weave as the cloth once carried by the bloodstained stranger.

Then one chain scrapes forward into the passage mouth, links glinting briefly in the fissure's light. Rex's growl deepens, while both pups remain tucked safely against you.

The beast within you catches meaning beneath the pups’ noises: fear of the chain, recognition of the blue-woven cloth, and a living scent below the stones.

Rex

Rex

Grrr... down there. Hurt one. Smells like the cloth-man.

Warwick

Warwick

Not hunter. Not forest. Calling... quiet calling.

Their meanings do not arrive as human sentences, but as sharp impressions carried through growls, whines, scent, and posture. Together, they point beneath the foundation.

Rex

Rex

Pups stay. You guard. Something waits.

Warwick

Warwick

Chain moved. Voice stopped. Alive below.

The chain scrapes forward again, answering their warning. Amber light trembles over the passage mouth, and the cold breath carries a faint, frightened human scent from below.

“Can I hear the chained survivor's voice beneath the stones?”

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 62)

The silence below breaks with a ragged breath, followed by a faint voice muffled beneath stone and earth. The words are indistinct, but unmistakably human.

Rex

Rex

Voice. Hurt one. Still there.

Warwick

Warwick

Calling from below. Quiet, but alive.

The voice rises through the amber fissure, clearer now beneath the scrape of chains. A woman pleads for help, then coughs hard enough to lose the next words.

The Chained Survivor

The Chained Survivor

Please... is someone there? They took the others. I can hear them moving in the dark.

The final word fades into stone, but the chain answers with a sharp drag. Rex stiffens in the hood, and Warwick presses closer against your chest.

Rex

Rex

More below. More hurt ones.

“I can i shift in to full wolf form and go down to scout out the rooms for the injured person calling for help”

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 54)

The amber fissure widens enough for a full wolf to slip through. Beyond it, the passage forks beneath the foundation, carrying the survivor’s scent and the faint echo of chains.

Foxyhunter

Foxyhunter

Wolf shape will let me scout without disturbing the stones.

Rex

Rex

Wolf goes first. Pups stay close.

Warwick

Warwick

Find hurt ones. Find cloth-man smell.

The old foundation answers with a muted groan, but the opening holds. Cold air flows around the crack, carrying no fresh movement from below, only dust, stone, and the survivor’s fading breath.

The Chained Survivor

The Chained Survivor

Please... hurry. I think they are coming back.

The route is narrow but passable in wolf form, with enough space to scout the first rooms before reaching the injured woman. The pups remain tucked safely in the hood, watching the dark below.

Keep the captors from harming the prisoners

“Are the captors returning through the passage?”

YES (Likely, rolled 24)

From the nearer fork comes a careful rhythm of boots, followed by the clink of several chains. Dust sifts from the ceiling as the returning captors approach.

The Chained Survivor

The Chained Survivor

They are coming back. Three of them, I think. Please, do not let them find you here.

Rex goes rigid inside the hood, his growl reduced to a trembling rumble. Warwick noses toward the crack, then pulls back from the cold draft.

The Chained Survivor

The Chained Survivor

They carry keys and hooks. I heard them say the lower room is ready for another one.

A muffled voice reaches the fork, too indistinct for words, but the captors' lantern glow begins to pulse against the passage walls. Metal drags over stone behind them.

Rex

Rex

Close now. Hurt ones need guarding.

The survivor falls silent below. Footsteps spread across the passage, searching each branch, while the amber light catches the first shadow moving toward the foundation's opening.
