The Bloodstained Stranger

Your red-furred body twists beneath the black cloak as you force yourself toward a more humanoid shape. Bones shift, then settle back; the attempt fails again, leaving you werebeast-shaped at the cave mouth.

Foxyhunter

Foxyhunter

The change still will not hold i growl in frustration

A lean middle-aged man, his sun-browned skin creased around gray eyes beneath cropped iron-gray hair, emerges from the trees, mud on his boots and a patched brown coat hanging from his narrow frame. His weathered face is tight with fear, and he carries a bloodstained scrap of blue cloth.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

Shadowwolf. I know what you your in there he calls in to the cave:i have a contract on Lord Veyran, for starving the poor and swallowing people into his city.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

This belonged to one of the missing. The disappearances are his work, or close enough that the proof must reach you before the gates seal.

He extends the cloth across the dark space between you. From the cave entrance, footsteps begin to echo through the stone, measured and growing nearer.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

Take it, assassin. Decide what to do with the truth, but do it now.

Foxyhunter

What is your payment for my help with this contract?

The question buys a few heartbeats of thought. Your reputation as the Shadowwolf makes the stranger stiffen, one hand tightening around the bloodstained cloth before he dares answer plainly.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

Gold would be an insult, and I have little enough. I can give you the gate key, the servant passages, and the names of those who serve Lord Veyran.

Measured footsteps draw nearer through the cave. You weigh his offer against the cloth, the contract, and what you know of the lord: useful access, but proof of the disappearances remains unverified.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

If you need coin, there is a silver coffer beneath his private chapel. Take it after the work. I swear it is there.

The answer is enough to identify a concrete bargain, though your attention has cost precious time. The approaching steps are now close enough to stir dust from the stone.

“I am guessing you want me to eliminate the lord but do you want me to make it look like an accident or just plane bloody?”

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

Foxyhunter

Foxyhunter

I’m guessing you want me to eliminate Lord Veyran. Do you want it made to look like an accident, or simply bloody?

Your keen senses catch the approaching rhythm changing: one set of steps slows near the outer bend, while the nearer tread continues. Your feared reputation makes the stranger flinch at the word bloody, but it also keeps him from mistaking your question for hesitation.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

An accident, if you can manage it. A dead lord draws suspicion; a lord dead by his own folly gives the hungry a chance to breathe.

He lowers the cloth and points toward a narrow crack in the cave wall. The steps are close now, and your sharpened hearing places someone just beyond the bend, though stone denies you a clear count.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

Use blood only if the clean story fails. His private chapel has a bell rope, a high gallery, and servants who will swear he was alone.

The bargain is settled, but the time spent reasoning has cost you certainty about the approaching presence. You now have his answer and the shape of a quieter method, with the cave’s next turn nearly upon you.

“Is the approaching person one of Veyran’s servants?”

NO, AND WORSE (Even, rolled 90)

The Bloodstained Stranger

A figure steps around the bend: a broad-shouldered older man in a dark green hunting coat, iron-gray beard cropped close, his weathered, ruddy face marked by a pale scar, and a silver-headed spear held across his chest. A cold blue ward flares behind him, sealing the cave mouth.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

No. Not Veyran's servant. That's worse. The hunter found us.

The stranger recoils from the ward, and the blue light catches fresh scratches along his coat. Beyond the hunter, the forest has gone silent, as though something drove every creature away.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

Shadowwolf. I heard you were hiding here, and I brought a cage made for your kind. The other one is bait, whether he knows it or not.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

He followed me from the road. If that ward closes fully, neither of us leaves.

The ward brightens, its lines crawling over the stone toward the cave's inner walls. The hunter plants his spear and watches you, while the stranger's offered bargain becomes a trap's central piece.

“Can i run fast enough to out run him and vanish”

YES, BUT (Unlikely, rolled 34)

Proof Before the Gates Seal

You launch through the cave's side passage, claws finding purchase on wet stone. The blue ward snaps toward you, but your red-furred body clears its closing edge by a breath.

The ward catches your black cloak instead of your body. Cloth tears free with a sharp crack, leaving the hood behind and exposing your white-streaked fur to the moonlit forest.

Foxyhunter

Foxyhunter

The ward is sealed behind me.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

Run, beast. I will find your trail before dawn.

You plunge between the trees and break your trail across a stony streambed. The hunter's spear strikes sparks against the rocks behind you, then his pursuit fades into distance.

The Bloodstained Stranger

The Bloodstained Stranger

Shadowwolf! The passage is open, but I cannot cross the ward!

From the dark beyond the stream, the cave and its blue seal vanish behind tangled firs. You have escaped unseen, but your cloak and its hood remain with the hunter's trap.

“I realize rex and warwick are still in the hood of my clock that got stuck i quickly turn around to grab my clock even if i have to fight the hunter”

The faint yips of Rex and Warwick cut through the trees. Your keen senses catch them inside the abandoned hood before the wind can bury their sound.

You wheel back toward the cave. The curse jars your balance as your body resists the turn, but your claws bite into the streambed and drive you forward.

The werewolf hunter steps from the firs, spear sweeping for your ribs. Your feared reputation makes him brace instead of advancing, giving you the instant your senses found.

You slip beneath the spear and seize the torn black cloak. The hunter's point clips your shoulder and it burn because of the silver in the spear head, scraping fur and skin, but the trapped hood comes free with both pups inside.

You land hard on one knee, shoulder stinging, then pull the cloak tight against your chest. Rex, a tiny male fox pup with orange fur and a white muzzle, and Warwick, a slightly larger male wolf pup with charcoal-gray fur and one floppy ear, wriggle safely in the hood, alive and secured.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

You turned back for them? Good. Now I know exactly what will make you stop running.

The hunter raises his spear again, but you have the cloak and pups in your grasp. Moonlight flashes along the torn fabric as the sealed cave waits behind him.

“Rage wells up in my body at the inplied threat to the pups in my clock. I put the clock down and, Roar a threat at the hunter if you even try to touch them i will gut you i growl as i let my claws out.”

Rage surges through your red-furred frame as you lower yourself over the abandoned hood. Your keen senses catch every shift of the werewolf hunter's spear, but the missing cloak leaves nothing in your grasp to set down.

Foxyhunter

Foxyhunter

Touch them and I will gut you!

Your claws extend, and your roar shakes loose dust from the fir branches. The curse twists the fury into a ragged, animal sound, weakening the threat even as your feared reputation makes the hunter hesitate.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

There is the beast beneath the legend. You threaten me while your pups lie exposed.

The werewolf hunter does not touch the hood. Instead, he plants the silver spear between you and the pups, turning its bright point toward the ground beside them. Your shoulder burns when you lunge forward.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

Back away, Shadowwolf. Leave them, and I may let them live. Come closer, and the cage closes around all three of you.

The threat fails to drive him off. It does force him to reveal his choice: the pups are now the center of the standoff, and the empty space where your cloak should be leaves you no shield.

“Rage wells up in my body at the inplied threat to the pups in my clock. I put the clock down on the ground and, Roar a threat at the hunter if you even try to touch them i will gut you i growl as i let my claws out.”

You lower the torn cloak and hood carefully onto the leaf-strewn ground, keeping your body between Rex, the fox pup, Warwick, the wolf pup, and the silver spear. Your scraped shoulder flares as you crouch.

Foxyhunter

Touch them and I will gut you!

Your claws rake fur as you lean forward, and your roar rolls through the firs. Keen senses catch the hunter's spear twitch before he moves, but the curse breaks your threat into a ragged animal bellow.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

Your reputation gives the words teeth, beast. Not enough to make me trust your restraint.

The hunter's fear keeps him from stepping closer, yet his discipline holds. He hooks the spear's shaft beneath the hood's edge and drags it a pace away from your reach, leaving the pups exposed between you.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

There. Now choose carefully. Charge me, and the silver takes you before you reach them. Stay back, and they remain breathing.

Your threat has failed to drive him away. It has instead cost you the hood's cover and shifted the pups beyond your immediate grasp, while the silver point guards the narrow space between you.

“Rage wells up in my body at the inplied threat to the pups in my clock. I put the clock down on the ground and, Roar a threat at the hunter if you even try to touch them i will gut you i growl as i let my claws out. Then i throw my daggers to knock his spear out of his hands”

FAILURE (Great Ranged Combat, rolled +1)

Rage tightens your red-furred frame as you set the torn cloak beside Rex and Warwick. Your scraped shoulder burns when you lower it, but you keep your body between the pups and the silver spear.

Foxyhunter

Foxyhunter

Touch them and I will gut you!

Your claws spring free, and the roar that follows shakes needles from the firs. The curse roughens your voice into an animal bellow, while your feared reputation makes the hunter's grip tighten rather than break.

Keen senses catch the spear's angle and the hunter's weight settling behind it. You reach for the enchanted daggers, but they are not at your belt: the torn cloak has taken them with its discarded folds.

You throw anyway, empty-handed. The missing blades' return enchantment gives you nothing to call back, and the curse jars your timing as your shoulder strains toward the cast.

The failed throw leaves no dagger to strike the spear. But your sharp sight reveals the opening: the werewolf hunter's hands are committed to the shaft beneath the hood, and the cloak with your blades lies just beyond his point.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

Empty claws, Shadowwolf. The pups still give me the advantage.

“Rage wells up in my body at the inplied threat to the pups in my clock. I put the clock down on the ground and, Roar a threat at the hunter if you even try to touch them i will gut you i growl as i let my claws out. Then i throw my daggers to knock his spear out of his hands”

SUCCESS (Legendary Melee Combat, rolled +4)

Your claws hook the torn cloak and drag it toward you. The scraped shoulder stings under the strain, but your fingers find the returning daggers hidden in its folds.

Foxyhunter

Foxyhunter

Touch them and I will gut you!

Keen senses read every shift in the hunter's hands. Your feared reputation makes him brace for a charge, while the curse wrenches your roar into a savage bellow and disrupts your first motion.

You cast both enchanted daggers in a crossing flash. One strikes the spearhead aside; the other catches the shaft against a fir, wrenching the silver weapon from the hunter's hands and pinning it beyond his reach.

The Werewolf Hunter

The Werewolf Hunter

No. How did you get those back?

The spear lies trapped against the tree, its blue wardlight guttering across the bark. With the werewolf hunter disarmed, the space between you and the pups is open, and the daggers shiver free to return.

Foxyhunter leaves moonlit forest streambed behind and arrives at the night.

“I grab my clock and quickly put it back on with both of the pups still in the hood. Then i hold out hands as both of my daggers return to me. Then i get down on all fours and run into the night and disappear”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

The forest gives way to a hollow of black pines and silver grass. Your torn cloak is fastened around you again, and Rex and Warwick remain nestled safely in its hood.

Moonlight catches both enchanted daggers in your hands before they settle into their sheaths. Behind you, the hunter's pursuit has vanished completely.

Foxyhunter

Foxyhunter

The pups are safe, and the trail is gone.

You slow beneath a leaning cedar where old stones form the remains of a foundation. Fresh claw marks score the nearest slab, too large for any ordinary wolf.

A faint amber glow pulses through cracks beneath the stones, followed by the muffled sound of something dragging itself below. Rex stirs, and Warwick gives one quiet warning whine.

The night closes around your red-furred silhouette as you vanish among the pines, leaving the hunter behind and carrying the pups toward the hidden light.
