Keena remains motionless beneath Lilly’s knife, then slowly shifts her weight toward the service alleys. She keeps her hands visible and her rifle untouched across her back.

Keena

We move through the service alleys. The east guard barracks are close, and Mara can be seen without alerting the Merchant.

Keena takes one careful step, guiding them between the fuel drums and the generator shed. Lilly’s blade stays at her throat as camp lights blink weakly behind them.

Keena

Keena

The armory entrance is watched. Two guards usually stand there, and they know my route. We use the laundry passage instead.

Ahead, a narrow alley opens between patched barracks. Two Royal Guards linger beside the armory’s sandbagged entrance, their rifles lowered but ready beneath the failing lamps.

Keena

Keena

Keep the knife where it is. If they see it, they will raise an alarm before we reach your sister.

Keena pauses at the alley’s first turn, leaving the next movement open. The guards remain unaware, while the barracks door waits beyond the darkened laundry passage.

Lead the way, captain. When we are done here, I am taking my sister back from you, and we will both escape this horrible place.

Then keep the blade steady and follow. I will get you to Mara.

Keena moves first, turning into the laundry passage with Lilly’s knife still at her throat. Her raised hand signals the two guards at the armory to remain where they are.

The Royal Guards do not challenge their captain. Keena leads Lilly past the sandbags and through a narrow corridor smelling of soap, rust, and damp concrete.

Keena

The barracks are through that door. Mara’s cot is beside the armory wall. You will see her immediately.

Keena stops at the laundry passage’s inner door and eases it open. Beyond lies the dim guard barracks, rows of cots visible beneath a failing strip of fluorescent light.

Beside the armory wall, Mara sits upright, a slim young woman with tangled brown hair, a gaunt face, and a patched gray shirt, sits upright on a narrow cot, fully visible in the stale light. She turns toward the opening as Keena keeps her hands raised.

Lilly’s knife moves before Keena can turn. The blade cuts across her throat, and Keena folds silently against the doorframe, her rifle still hanging untouched across her back.

Keena slides to the concrete floor. The two Royal Guards remain beyond the passage, screened by the sandbags and unaware of what happened inside.

Mara

Mara

Lilly? What did you do?

Mara rises from the cot, staring past the open door at Keena’s fallen body. Her voice stays low, but the barracks suddenly feels too small for the silence.

Mara

Mara

You came for me. Is she dead?

Outside, a guard shifts near the armory entrance. Boots scrape faintly against concrete, while the failing fluorescent strip flickers over Mara, the cot, and the open passage.

Mara

Mara

If we are leaving, we have seconds. Tell me where to go.

Mara steps toward the doorway, keeping her eyes on Lilly and the corridor beyond. Keena’s keys lie beside her hand on the floor.

“Take keena's rifle, I'll take her keys, let's go.”

Lilly stoops and lifts Keena’s keys without a sound. Among them, a brass key bears a faded laundry mark, identifying a service exit beyond the barracks.

Mara crosses to the fallen rifle, gathers it by the sling, and checks its weight before keeping the muzzle angled safely toward the floor.

Mara

Mara

I have it. The laundry exit will take us behind the generator sheds.

Mara slips the rifle over her shoulder. Outside, the two Royal Guards remain screened by the sandbags, their voices muted beneath the failing lamps.

Mara

Mara

Now. Stay low, and keep moving.

Mara steps through the laundry passage while Lilly follows with the keys secured in hand. The marked brass key opens a narrow rear door into the dark service yard.

They pass through and pull the door nearly shut behind them. Cold air moves over the yard, carrying them away from the barracks and toward the generator sheds.

Lilly

I've missed you so much.

Mara stops beneath the generator shed’s shadow. The rifle remains slung over her shoulder, while the cold service yard stretches behind them and Keena’s body lies beyond the nearly closed door.

Mara

Mara

I missed you too, Lilly. Every day they kept me here, I wondered whether you were still alive.

Mara reaches for Lilly’s hand, then hesitates only long enough to glance toward the dark camp windows. No alarm rises from the barracks.

Mara

Mara

You found me. That is what matters now. We are together, and we are outside the barracks.

She squeezes Lilly’s hand and guides her along the generator sheds, keeping to the broken fence’s deepest shadow. Weak lamps flicker across the yard behind them.

Mara

Mara

Tell me where we can go. I will follow you, but we need cover before someone notices the open passage.

“I need my vengeance against the merchant.”

Mara keeps close beneath the generator shed’s broken overhang. Behind them, the barracks remains silent, while the camp’s failing lamps leave the service yard in strips of darkness.

Mara

Mara

The Merchant is still in his chambers. If vengeance is what you need, we can reach him before the night watch changes.

Mara studies the keys in Lilly’s hand, then points toward a narrow maintenance track running behind the generator sheds. It leads toward the merchant’s quarters without crossing the main yard.

Mara

Mara

There is a service stair beneath his chambers. I saw it during inventory duty. No guards use it after dark.

Mara adjusts the rifle sling and starts along the maintenance track. She keeps her steps measured, leaving the deeper shadow beside the fence open for Lilly to follow.

Mara

Mara

When we reach him, you will have your moment. I will stand with you, and I will not let this place take you from me again.

“Let's go”
