Ember arrives in the poetry aisle as a young adult woman florist blocks the narrow path. Her green apron is dusted with pollen, and a loose braid frames her anxious face.

Behind her stands another young adult woman in a charcoal coat, poised and pale, one hand already reaching toward the shop's front exit. Recognition tightens the florist's posture.

Maris

Elena, please. I am not here to punish you. Just give me one minute.

Elena

Elena

You recognized me, Maris. That is never harmless. Let me leave before you tell everyone.

The florist's fingers curl around a small bundle of lavender, crushing neither stem nor silence. Her eyes flick toward Ember, asking for an ally without saying what secret waits between them.

Maris

Maris

Ember, could you help me? Tell her I only want to talk, not expose anything.

Elena

If she says it aloud, this reunion is over before it begins.

Bring Maris and Elena to an honest conversation

“Can I hear what happened before either of you leaves?”

YES (Even, rolled 29)

The exit remains open, but Elena’s hand pauses above the handle. Maris exhales, relief and fear crossing her face as the shop’s quiet gathers around them.

Elena

Elena

You can hear it. Then no half-truths, Maris. Not from me, and not in front of a stranger you pulled into this.

Maris

Maris

Ember is not a stranger to me anymore. She helped me this morning, and I trust her kindness more than I trust my own courage right now.

Elena studies Ember, searching for judgment and finding only the stillness of someone willing to listen. Slowly, she lowers her hand from the door.

Elena

Elena

Maris and I were together last year. I ended it badly, then told people she was unstable when she tried to explain why.

Maris

Maris

I was grieving, not unstable. But I did keep asking for another chance after Elena said no. I made it harder for both of us to move on.

The lavender rests between them, bruised but fragrant. Neither woman leaves; the truth has made the narrow aisle tense, yet finally honest.

“Does Elena still want to leave immediately?”

YES, BUT (Unlikely, rolled 32)

Elena turns the handle and opens the shop door. Cold street air slips into the poetry aisle, carrying away some of the lavender’s sweetness.

Elena

Elena

I am leaving now. I meant what I said, Maris, but I cannot stay here and become part of a conversation you needed someone else to witness.

Maris

Maris

Then let me say one thing before you go. I am sorry I kept asking you to return after you had already ended it.

Elena pauses on the threshold, but does not turn back. Maris’s apology reaches her; it does not change the distance she has chosen.

Elena

Elena

Thank you. But do not tell people we made peace. We have not, and I need the freedom to leave this unfinished.

She steps onto the pavement and pulls the door shut behind her. Maris remains with the bruised lavender, her chance to repair the past narrowed to an apology Elena heard but did not accept.

Ember puts her hand on Maris' shoulder

“I'm sorry that happened to you Maris I am here if you would like to talk through what just happened and make meaning out of it, but I can also leave you to process this on your own if you would like.”

Ember

I’m sorry that happened to you, Maris. I’m here if you’d like to talk through it and make meaning of it, but I can also leave you space if you need that.

Ember rests her hand on Maris’s shoulder, gentle and brief. Maris stiffens beneath the touch, then carefully steps aside, keeping the bruised lavender between them.

Maris

Maris

I know you mean that kindly. I just cannot turn this into a lesson while it still feels like my chest is being pressed flat.

She lowers her gaze to the lavender. The apology has been heard, but Elena’s boundary leaves Maris with no conversation to repair today.

Maris

Maris

I need to be alone for a little while. But you gave me a choice instead of asking me to perform being okay, and that matters.

Maris gathers the lavender without crushing it further and moves toward the counter. The immediate door is space, but her gratitude leaves Ember a quieter way to help later: simply remain someone who does not demand a meaning yet.
