Oscar Stands Up for Gi

The next afternoon, Gi leaves Mia's Flowers for Spinsters. to pick up soil, coffee, and sandwich fixings. Mia stays behind at the shop, minding the register.

Oscar works halfway down the produce aisle, his blue sweater vest neat despite his tousled hair. He spots Gi, adjusts his glasses, and immediately finds a reason to rearrange nearby cans.

the older shopper

the older shopper

That's him, isn't it? The florist who goes around seducing every man in town.

the younger shopper

the younger shopper

I heard he even convinces straight men they aren't straight. Some people have no shame.

Their voices carry between the shelves. Oscar freezes with one can lifted, gray eyes flicking toward Gi before he sets it down too carefully.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

Those cans are already stocked. I mean, they were stocked. You could use the other aisle instead.

The older shopper gives Oscar a startled look. He flushes, then moves closer to the supply shelf, hovering near Gi without quite meeting his eyes. The cart remains open between them.

✓ Quest Accepted

Ignore the shopper's comments about Gi's prominent butt

“I try to ignore as they start making lewd remarks about my prominent butt, and say homophobic slurs. Oscar seems annoyed those men are talking like that.”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Willpower, rolled +2)

Gi keeps his attention on the shopping list and guides the cart toward the soil, coffee, and sandwich fixings, letting the shoppers’ remarks pass unanswered.

The older shopper snickers with his companion, adding another crude insult. Gi reaches for a bag of potting soil and places it carefully in the cart.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

That’s enough. You’re in a grocery store, not somebody’s comment section.

Oscar’s voice shakes at first, but annoyance steadies it. He steps from the shelf and faces the shoppers, glasses slipping slightly down his nose.

the older shopper

the older shopper

We’re just saying what everyone knows.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

No, you’re repeating gossip and making this aisle unpleasant for everyone.

The younger shopper looks away. Oscar exhales, then returns to the shelf beside Gi, keeping his attention on the cans while the aisle settles into uneasy quiet.

“*I look at Oscar, then thank him. Then I do a slight pose that just out my butt, Oscar kinda blushes and tries not to look, though does make glances. I talk to the two guy shoppers. "You know, for guys who claim to be straight, you keep talking about a guy's butt. Not a good look. I don't think others would approve"”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled +1)

Gi William

Gi William

Thanks, Oscar.

Gi glances at Oscar, then shifts into a deliberate little pose that emphasizes his backside. Oscar’s face reddens; he looks away, then steals two quick glances.

Gi William

Gi William

You know, for guys who claim to be straight, you keep talking about a guy’s butt. Not a good look. I don’t think others would approve.

The older shopper’s smugness falters. A woman comparing labels at the end of the aisle pauses, while the younger shopper suddenly studies the floor.

the older shopper

the older shopper

That’s not what we meant. We were just repeating what people say.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

You could also stop repeating it. That would make this whole situation a lot less embarrassing for you.

Oscar adjusts his glasses, still pink around the ears, and gestures toward the coffee display. The shoppers mutter under their breath but move on, leaving the aisle quieter.

✓ Quest Accepted

Discourage Oscar from defending you

“*I turn to Oscar. I thank him for defending me, saying a appreciate it. But then I say "but while I do appreciate it, please don't do it again. I don't want you to get dragged into this, and people get the wrong idea about you. Your a nice guy, you shouldn't need to worry about this."”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled +1)

Gi William

Gi William

Thanks, Oscar. I appreciate you defending me, but please don't do it again. I don't want you dragged into this, or people getting the wrong idea about you. You're a nice guy; you shouldn't have to worry about this.

Oscar goes still beside the shelf, one hand resting on a can of soup. The aisle remains quiet, but the earlier remarks seem to linger in the space between them.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

I know what you mean. I just... they were being cruel, and nobody else was saying anything.

He nudges his glasses higher and glances toward the checkout lanes, checking that the older shoppers have truly moved on. His voice drops to keep the exchange private.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

I won't make a habit of it. But if someone says something like that right in front of me, I can't promise I'll always stay quiet.

Oscar reaches past the cart for a package of sandwich rolls and places it with the soil and coffee. He keeps a careful distance, though his attention stays on Gi.

“"Thanks Oscar, but really, don't worry about it. I can handle it. And I wouldn't want to see that pretty face of yours painted with worry"”

Gi William

Gi William

Thanks, Oscar, but really, don't worry about it. I can handle it. And I wouldn't want to see that pretty face of yours painted with worry.

Oscar’s fingers pause against the soup can. Color rises from his collar to his ears, and his careful composure slips into a startled, helpless smile.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

My face is not painted with worry. It’s just... warm in here.

He adjusts his glasses twice, then notices the repetition and drops his hand. The nearby cooler hums while a checkout scanner beeps somewhere beyond the aisle.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

But, okay. I’ll try not to worry. You’re good at handling yourself, apparently.

Oscar nudges the sandwich rolls deeper into the cart, giving the groceries a practical inspection while sneaking one brief glance back at Gi.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

Do you need help carrying the soil to the register, or would that count as worrying too?

✓ Quest Accepted

Accept Oscar's help carrying the groceries to the register

“"I don't know pretty boy, sure you can handle it? Your hands look better suited to holding, not carrying."”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled +0)

Gi William

Gi William

I don't know, pretty boy. Sure you can handle it? Your hands look better suited to holding, not carrying.

Oscar stares at Gi for one stunned second, then bends to lift the soil bag. His grip settles firmly beneath it, though his ears turn bright red.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

I can carry one bag of soil. I promise my hands are versatile.

He straightens with the bag against his sweater vest and carries it toward the register, walking carefully but without strain. The cart rolls beside him.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

And for the record, I do hold things all the time. Groceries, boxes, occasionally a very judgmental cat.

At the front of the store, Oscar sets the soil beside the checkout and brushes a trace of dust from his sleeve. He looks back, visibly pleased with himself.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

He called me pretty boy. I carried the soil. Somehow both facts feel equally dangerous.

Accept Oscar's help carrying the groceries to the register

“"your hands are versatile? What's that supposed to mean hmm?" *I say with a joking wink*”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled +2)

Gi William

Gi William

Your hands are versatile? What's that supposed to mean, hmm?

Gi adds a joking wink. Oscar’s pleased expression collapses into startled embarrassment, and the soil bag suddenly seems much safer than eye contact.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

I mean exactly what I said. They can carry things, hold things, and do other completely ordinary tasks.

He sets one hand on the bag as if demonstrating its usefulness, then realizes that gesture is not helping and folds both hands neatly in front of him.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

You’re the one making it sound suspicious. I was talking about groceries.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

He winked at me, and now I have to survive an entire checkout line.

The cashier calls the next customer forward. Oscar nudges the soil toward the register, still blushing, but his smile returns as he waits beside the cart.

“"say, pretty boy, when do you get off work. Just curious"”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled -3)

Gi William

Gi William

Pretty boy, when do you get off work? Just curious.

Oscar’s smile turns shy and helpless. He glances toward the checkout lanes, where the line has grown, then lowers his voice beside the soil bag.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

I’m off at six. I have to finish stocking the back room first, though, so I probably won’t get out until six-ten.

The register scanner chirps sharply as Oscar reaches for the coffee, and the cashier calls for him to bring the next customer forward. His cheeks remain bright red.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

I can help you check out now, if you’re ready. Then, um, I’ll be around after six-ten.

He takes the soil bag to the counter, but a corner catches against the metal rail. The paper tears slightly, spilling a stripe of dark soil onto the floor.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

Okay. That’s coming out of my break, apparently. Still, six-ten. You’ll know where to find me.

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled -1)

Gi William

Gi William

I’ll be here by six, then. Just a hangout, though. Wouldn’t want anyone thinking anything scandalous. Would we?

Oscar freezes with one hand on the torn soil bag. The cashier scans the coffee, and a tiny, helpless smile starts tugging at his mouth.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

Absolutely not scandalous. Strictly a totally ordinary hangout between two people who happen to enjoy... groceries.

He glances toward the checkout line, then lowers his voice, visibly trying to sound casual while sweeping the spilled soil into a neat pile with his shoe.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

There’s a diner across from the store. Or we could get coffee somewhere quieter. Whatever feels normal to you.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

He said six. He is actually coming back at six.

Oscar straightens, dusts his hands against his vest, and meets Gi’s eyes for a brief, bright second before the next customer approaches the register.

“Diner sounds great. I need to get back to the shop, but I'll see you later." I start heading out but add "and thanks for glancing at my butt earlier, hope you enjoyed" *then I leave*”

SUCCESS (Great Conversation, rolled +1)

Gi William

Diner sounds great. I need to get back to the shop, but I’ll see you later.

Gi turns toward the store’s entrance, leaving the cart and checkout behind. Oscar remains beside the register, still holding the dustpan from the spilled soil.

Gi William

Gi William

And thanks for glancing at my butt earlier. Hope you enjoyed.

Gi heads out before the tease can gather any further momentum. The automatic doors slide open, letting in a gust of cool afternoon air and the distant traffic.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

I was not... I mean, it was an accident. Mostly. Have a good shift, Gi.

Oscar watches him cross toward the sidewalk, then presses both hands over his warm face. Behind him, the cashier, a young woman with a compact build, dark curly hair, and a green store apron over a gray shirt clears her throat and points toward the waiting line.

Oscar Ryan

Oscar Ryan

Six o’clock. A diner. And he knows I looked.
