The grove lies within the Breachward wilds, where black roots clutch old stone and the air hums with a metallic pulse. Sol Badguy steps between pale trunks and finds a ranger sprawled in the fern bed, half-buried under moss and leaves, guarding a glowing relic against their chest.

Unseen pressure bends the grass around them. The ranger’s breath comes ragged, but their eyes lock on Sol with sudden, desperate recognition.

The Ranger

You. Mentor’s student. Good. Take it, before they find me.

He thrusts the artifact upward with trembling arms, a palm-sized shard of pale metal and runes, still humming like a struck bell.

The Ranger

The Ranger

I have held them off long enough. If you know what your master taught you, then run.

A hush tightens around the grove. Then, from beyond the trees, comes the scrape of careful boots and the faint clink of hidden mail.

The Ranger

Take the relic now, Sol Badguy, or speak and be ready. They are close.

Sol Badguy’s hand closes on the rune-shard, and the grove answers with a thin metallic whine. He slips it away as his other hand brings up the crossbow, thumb bracing the string while a bolt seats with a dry click.

The ranger sags lighter against the moss, the immediate pressure over them easing as the relic leaves their grasp. Dirt and leaves shift where their body had been pinned.

A sharp scrape sounds between the trunks, closer now, and the bent grass trembles in a passing wake. The hidden approach has heard enough to hurry.

The Ranger

The Ranger

Go. I can buy you a breath, but only a breath.

Sol has the relic and a loaded weapon, but the grove is no longer quiet. Something beyond the pale trees shifts toward the clearing.

The ranger pushes one hand into the earth and forces their head up, eyes fixed on the trees. They cannot follow, and whatever comes next will decide who reaches them first.

Sol pockets the rune-shard in one smooth motion, then snaps the crossbow up and seats a bolt with practiced ease.

The ranger watches the handoff from the ground, breath tight, while the treeline keeps rustling with that same hungry scrape.

A dark shape breaks between two pale trunks, low and fast, and the grass flattens in its wake.

The Ranger

The Ranger

There. Take the left side, if you are moving.

Sol shifts his aim, and the grove seems to hold its breath around the loaded bow.

The ranger plants one palm harder into the moss, trying to rise as the shape closes on the clearing.

Sol looses the bolt at the left flank, but the shot skews wide in the rush of breath and motion.

The quarrel snaps through leaves instead of flesh, and the dark shape twists without slowing.

The miss buys only a heartbeat. The thing crashes into the grassline closer than before, and the flattened trail it carves bends toward the ranger.

The ranger throws their weight back, one hand scraping moss, eyes fixed on the oncoming blur.

The Ranger

The Ranger

Again, Sol, keep it off me!

The grove tightens around the failed shot, and the threat now has the ranger square in its path.

* aiming at the left flank aiming as the first breach and fire*

SUCCESS (Fair Ranged Weapons, rolled +2)

Sol shifts his aim and lets the crossbow speak again.

The bolt drives into the left flank of the rushing shape, and the thing jerks sideways in a spray of torn grass.

That shove breaks its line. The pressure bearing down on the ranger snaps loose for a heartbeat, and the ranger surges upright instead of falling under it.

The Ranger

The Ranger

Move, now! I can run!

The path opens between the pair and the treeline, but the wounded threat recoils in the same instant, turning its ruined charge back toward the ranger.

The ranger lunges for the relic with a shaking hand, trying to keep pace with Sol's cover as the grass parts around their feet.

"Pulling the ranger clear keeping the relic stored as i bark keep moving as i load the next bolt and fire at the mass

SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +0)

Sol hooks an arm around the ranger and yanks them clear, dragging them out of the split grass line before the charge can close. The glowing relic disappears against his grip as he shifts it to safety.

Sol Badguy

Keep moving.

He plants his feet, snaps in a fresh bolt, and sends the crossbow forward again. The shot hammers into the dark mass, staggering it mid-lunge.

The ranger stumbles free of the open path at last, coughing hard but upright, while the creature veers off with its momentum broken.

A shard of splintered wood bites Sol's forearm as the reload kicks back in his hands, and the crossbow string sings loud enough to echo through the grove.

The ranger gets one last look over their shoulder, then runs for the trees with Sol between them and the threat. Behind them, the dark shape drags itself back into the grass, not reaching them before the gap closes.
