The three wagons remain intact beneath the leaning ash tree, but every lantern flame bends toward the eastern marker. Beyond the reeds, something answers with a low, distant chime.

Erica Blodgett
Stay together, and keep away from the eastern marker.
As Erica warns them, a black sigil briefly surfaces in the mud between the wagons. Its narrow point turns toward one family's travel chest.

the refugees
What is that? Is it coming for us?
The refugees draw close, a mixed group of human adults and children in patched, earth-toned clothes without abandoning the wagons. Faces turn toward Erica, while the marked captive watches the sigil with a tightening jaw.

the captive
That is the summons changing direction. Something found what the seal wanted.
The travel chest gives a single muffled knock from within. Reeds bow outward along the dark waterline, though no figure emerges, and the sigil brightens beneath the mud.
✓ Quest Accepted
Shield the marked travel chest from the redirected summons
“I immediately tell the refugees to stay back and to let me handle it”
SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -3)

Erica Blodgett
Stay back from the chest and the marker. Let me handle this.
Erica steps between the refugees and the travel chest, one hand raised. Her pact-shadow spreads across the mud, forming a dark boundary around the wagons.

the refugees
Back, then. Everyone behind the wagons. Give her room.
The families retreat together, pulling the children and loose bundles away from the sigil. The chest remains inside Erica's boundary, isolated from them.

the captive
It heard you. The summons is fixed on the chest now, not the refugees.
The black sigil flares, and heat bites through Erica's boot into her ankle. She holds her ground as the cost leaves a dark welt above the leather.

the refugees
We are clear. Whatever is inside, face it carefully.
“I decide to do something I have not do for a while, I call upon my patron to help me with this chest”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled -1)

Erica turns her raised hand toward the chest and reaches through the pact, summoning the presence she has avoided for too long. The boundary darkens, but holds.

the patron
You call, and I answer. The chest is marked with my claim, but it need not claim those behind you.
A second shadow pours from Erica's palm across the mud. It touches the travel chest, and the iron hasps spring open without a sound.

the captive
Your patron opened it. Then the summons truly belongs to the pact.
Inside lies a bundle of gray road-cloth wrapped around a small black stone. The stone's glow fades beneath the patron's shadow, and the sigil in the mud goes still.

the patron
Take the stone. It called the Ashen Host, but now it answers only to you. Spend it wisely, oath-bearer.
The heat leaves Erica's ankle. Around the wagons, the refugees breathe again, while the eastern marker's distant chime dies into the marsh.
