Festival bells clash with shouting as Erica reaches the small-town jail. Torches surge through the street, their flames reflected in rain-dark stones and the barred entrance.

Inside, an exiled lord stands among the prisoners, a gaunt middle-aged man in a mud-stained crimson cloak. His silver hair is braided tight, and an old signet gleams on one finger.

Bar the inner gate. Keep the crowd from the cells. This one is the spy, and tonight we unmask him.

Two jail guards shove a trembling captive toward the bars. Outside, the mob answers with a roar, raising hooks, poles, and burning brands above their heads.

the jail guard

My lord, there is no time for questions. They will tear the place apart before we can prove anything.

The torchlight reaches through the grating, but the jail's shadows slide the wrong way, pooling behind the lord and curling around the prisoners' feet.

the exiled lord

Do not look at the dark. Watch the captive. The thing hiding here wants us distracted.

What did the captive do?

Erica's question cuts through the bells and shouting. The exiled lord turns from the shifting shadows, weighing her with a guarded stare.

the exiled lord

He opened the eastern refugee road to the Ashen Host. Three wagons vanished before dawn, and he carried the seal that marked them for slaughter.

The captive, a gaunt young human man with a narrow, hollow-cheeked face, close-cropped brown hair, sallow skin, and a faded gray tunic over dark trousers flinches at the accusation. Beneath his torn sleeve, a black sigil glimmers once, answering the darkness pooled around the prisoners.

the captive

the captive

I carried the seal, yes. I did not choose what it summoned. Your lord sent those wagons into the marsh.

the exiled lord

the exiled lord

A desperate lie from a marked traitor. The seal was stolen from my keeping, and he alone returned from the road.

Outside, the mob pounds the barred entrance. Inside, the shadows tighten around the captive's feet, while the signet on the lord's hand answers with a faint red gleam.

“I stand their for a moment before asking the captive to confirm their story as my mood instantly darkens”

Erica stands amid the bells and pounding gates, silent for a breath. The torchlight dims across her scarred cheek as the shadows gather closer around the captive.

Erica Blodgett

Confirm your story. Did you carry the seal without choosing what it summoned?

the captive

the captive

Yes. I took it from the lord's courier after he died on the eastern road. I thought it would open the refugee way, not mark the wagons.

The captive lifts his marked wrist toward the bars. The black sigil pulses, and a second image stains the air: three wagons sinking into gray marsh mist.

the captive

the captive

The seal answered his signet, not mine. When the Ashen Host came, your lord was already gone.

The exiled lord's guarded expression hardens. His red signet flares, and the shadows recoil from him only long enough to reveal muddy tracks beneath his boots.

the exiled lord

the exiled lord

A conjured memory proves nothing. He wants you angry enough to break the gate for him.

“I ask the captive to show me”

Show me the seal, and show me what it did on the eastern road.

The captive lowers himself beside the bars and draws a wrapped object from inside his tunic. The cloth is damp, but the black seal beneath remains sharply legible.

the captive

the captive

This is how I found it, after the courier died. The face bears the lord's mark. The reverse bears a road rune, meant to open passage.

He turns the seal toward Erica. Its dark surface catches no torchlight, yet the sigil on his wrist answers with a faint, painful glow.

the captive

I pressed it into the eastern marker stone. The road opened. Then the mark changed, and the marsh swallowed the wagons instead.

A thin vision spills across the jail floor: three wagons halted in gray mist, their refugee lanterns vanishing one by one as red light burns beyond the reeds.

the exiled lord

the exiled lord

Enough. That seal was never a key. It was a summons, and he knew exactly what would answer.

“Okay, so now I say that I'll go handle the mob for a moment to ensure that nobody tries to break in as we look for a potential spy that may or may not exist”

I'll handle the mob for a moment. Keep them from breaking in while you determine whether there's truly a spy here.

Erica turns from the seal and strides toward the barred entrance. She raises one hand, and her pact's shadow coils around her voice as it carries through the iron.

the mob

Stand aside! Give us the traitor, and we will judge him ourselves!

Erica Blodgett

No one enters this jail. The prisoners remain alive until the truth is known.

The words strike with unnatural weight. Torches lower one by one, and the pounding fades into mutters as the crowd falls back from the doorway.

the jail guard

the jail guard

They are holding, my lady. You bought us time.

The magic leaves Erica's throat raw, and a thin black line briefly darkens the scar on her cheek. Outside, the mob keeps its distance, while inside the jail the seal's vision still stains the floor.

“I sigh and turn back to everyone in the jail... I then say we do have time but we need to actually get good use out of it. I then head back over to the exiled lord and captee.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Persuasion, rolled -1)

Erica sighs, letting the last of the spell's pressure leave her throat. Outside, the mob mutters beyond the barred entrance, held back by her command.

We do have time, but we need to make good use of it.

The jail guard steadies his grip on the inner gate as Erica turns from the entrance and crosses back toward the seal's fading vision.

the jail guard

Then we will use every breath of it, my lady. I will keep the gate shut.

Erica stops beside the exiled lord and the captive. The black seal lies between them, its glow reflected in the muddy tracks beneath the lord's boots.

the captive

the captive

Good. Ask him why his signet answered the seal, and why he left the eastern road before the wagons vanished.

the exiled lord

the exiled lord

Ask, then. But spend this time carefully. The thing in the shadows is listening, and it has already learned our names.

“What makes you think something is in the shadows? Do you have proof?”

What makes you think something is in the shadows? Do you have proof?

the exiled lord

the exiled lord

Proof is beneath my boots. Those tracks appeared after the gate was barred, and they end where no living man stands.

The lord lifts his crimson cloak. Muddy footprints cross the floor behind him, narrow and wet, though no doorway or prisoner could have made them.

the captive

the captive

The seal is proof too. It answers the darkness, and the darkness answers his signet. Watch.

The captive tilts the black seal toward the lord's ring. A thin shadow rises from its edge, briefly taking the shape of a hand before sinking into the stones.

the exiled lord

the exiled lord

There. It followed me from the eastern road. I thought it hunted the wagons, but it has been listening through us.

The demonstration drains the seal's remaining glow. The captive's marked wrist begins to bleed through the torn sleeve, a small but definite price for forcing the evidence into view.
