Sydnee arrives on the deck of an elven longship as its market buckles beneath a sudden beast attack. Crates split, awnings whip, and terrified elves scramble across the rain-slick boards.

A hulking, four-legged beast with slate hide and pale antlers prowls through the stalls, roaring as it drives the crowd inward. Every retreating path bends toward a marked circle.

At the circle’s center stands a broad-shouldered adult woman, the barbarian chieftain, with a weathered, scar-marked face, wearing a fur mantle over iron-studded leather. Her braided black hair is bound with bone rings, and she grips no weapon.

The god is displeased! The circle is condemned! We are all marked for death!

The chieftain does not direct the defense. She remains rigid within the painted boundary while sailors and merchants collide around her, their panic feeding the beast’s advance.

Hold the line away from the circle! Do not cross the marks!

Beyond the pitching rails, storm-dark clouds coil around the distant Forbidden Peak. Lightning silhouettes dragons circling its summit as the beast turns, herding the last fleeing figures toward Sydnee and the chieftain.

We can't have ya dyin'. We gotta make sure ya don't die.

Sydnee seizes the barbarian chieftain and hauls her across the painted marks. Boots skid over the rain-slick deck as the circle breaks beneath them.

You dare pull me from the boundary?

The barbarian chieftain stumbles free, fur mantle snapping in the storm. Behind them, the beast lunges into the empty circle and recoils from the broken markings.

Then stand with me, hybrid. Keep the beast from the fleeing.

Freed from the condemned circle, the barbarian chieftain plants herself beside Sydnee, shoulders squared. Sailors surge past while lightning flashes above the distant dragons.

Why attack the beast when the longship likely has more of a brainwashing effect on it? Why is this marked circle such a target?

The barbarian chieftain studies the painted lines while the beast prowls beyond them, snorting clouds of steam. The ship’s carved rails shudder beneath each distant roar.

Because the beast is not choosing its path. The longship’s warding song bends its mind, driving it toward the circle.

She points to the marks without crossing them. Rainwater gathers in the grooves, yet the symbols remain unnaturally dry, faintly glowing beneath the storm.

That boundary is older than this vessel. It catches what the ship’s magic herds, then binds it for sacrifice or judgment.

The beast wheels sharply as another pulse moves through the deck. Its pale antlers tilt toward the circle, but its claws scrape hard against the boards.

Break the song, and we may free the creature. Break the circle again, and whatever waits beneath it may notice us.
