Elianor enters the Duchess's garden as the report finishes its passage through the household. Beneath clipped yew trees, Maurice Headsman stands guard while servants crowd anxiously against the stone walls.

Maurice Headsman
Duchess, the dead will not wait for a seal or ceremony. Let Celia Graves ride with us, and let her use the gift death gave her.
The Duchess, an elderly woman with a narrow, composed face, silver hair braided beneath a dark green veil, weighs him from her carved stone seat.

the Duchess
You ask me to release a stranger into a war already gathering at my borders. Tell me why her power belongs on my road, rather than behind my walls.
Before Maurice can answer, the garden gate bangs open. A young adult man in a mud-dark riding cloak staggers through, pale beneath road dust, one sleeve marked with black ash.

The Rider
Duchess! The eastern watchfire is gone. Villages beyond the ford are burning, and shapes in the Baron’s colors are moving west.

Maurice Headsman
Then the attack has begun. Duchess, choose now. Do we summon Celia, or meet the Baron blind?

“Tell the Duchess "Celia Graves saved my life, were she free Celia would already be fighting against the Barons undead army."”
SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +1)

Elianor Vale
Celia Graves saved my life. Were she free, Celia would already be fighting against the Baron's undead army.
The garden falls silent. Maurice lowers his chin, while the rider steadies himself against the gate and watches the Duchess for judgment.

the Duchess
You stake your word before my household, Elianor Vale. I believe you. Celia Graves will not remain behind these walls.

Maurice Headsman
Then we have our answer. Send for her, and saddle the fastest horses.
The Duchess rises, her dark green veil stirring in the smoky wind. She gestures sharply toward the servants gathered by the wall.

the Duchess
Bring Celia to the east court. Give her provisions, a mount, and whatever arms she requests. The Baron will find no helpless dead waiting for him.
Servants scatter through the passages. Beyond the garden, a bell begins to toll for the mustering, and Maurice turns toward the sound with grim purpose.

“I ask the Duchess "may I be allowed to accompany Celia and Maurice? They saved my life and I am honor bound to help them."”
SUCCESS (Fair Diplomacy, rolled +0)

Elianor Vale
May I accompany Celia and Maurice? They saved my life, and I am honor bound to help them.
The Duchess studies Elianor beneath the tolling bell. Her gaze lingers on the fresh silver brand at Elianor’s throat before returning to her face.

the Duchess
You may ride with them. But your honor is now pledged before my household, and I will hold you answerable for what follows.

Maurice Headsman
She has earned a place beside us. I will see that she reaches the east road alive, if steel can make that promise.
A servant hurries back through the garden arch, breathless, and points toward the east court. Hooves strike stone beyond the walls as the mustering gathers force.

the Duchess
Then take no title from my permission, Elianor Vale. You travel as a sworn witness and ally, not as one of my soldiers.
The Duchess turns to Maurice and thrusts a ring of gate keys into his broad hand. From the east court, a woman’s voice calls for provisions and a fresh mount.
“I grad a spear and follow Maurice”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +3)

Elianor crosses into the east court, seizes a ashwood spear from the weapons rack, and falls in behind Maurice as he strides toward the waiting horses.
Her quick hand catches the sound of a loose saddle strap before anyone else notices. She knots it tight, and the nearest mount stands ready instead of being abandoned.

Maurice Headsman
Good. Keep the point forward and your eyes wider than your grip. The road will test both.
Celia Graves steps from the arched passage, a middle-aged woman in a weathered black riding coat, gray-streaked hair bound close, and a death-marked blade at her hip.

Celia Graves
I heard the order. If the Baron’s dead are beyond the ford, I will find what commands them.

Maurice Headsman
Then ride beside us, Celia. Elianor comes too, and the Duchess has placed her under my protection.
The east gate groans open. Smoke stains the distant sky, while servants lead out the horses and the mustering bell gives way to the hard rhythm of departure.

“I ride toward the burning villages with Maurice”
FAILURE (Fair Agility, rolled +0)

Elianor reaches the mounting yard as Maurice swings into his saddle, but the horse meant for her is already gone, led away with the supply train.
She takes the east road on foot beside the departing horses. Hooves quickly outpace her, and smoke blurs the burning villages beyond the ford.

Maurice Headsman
Stop there. I will not have you vanish between one stride and the next.
Maurice reins in hard. Celia halts ahead of him, while the road divides around a collapsed watchtower and a weed-choked canal.

Celia Graves
The canal path is narrow, but it reaches the ford sooner. If the dead are moving west, that road may show us their trail.

Maurice Headsman
Then choose your ground, Elianor. The road costs distance. The canal costs footing, but may reveal what the Baron is sending.
The horses wait beneath the smoke, Maurice holding the reins of his mount while the overgrown canal path opens beside the broken tower.
“I take the canal path toward the ford”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Elianor takes the canal path, placing each step on firm stones beneath the weeds. The broken watchtower falls behind as the horses follow carefully along the raised bank.

Maurice Headsman
Good choice. Keep to the bank and watch the water. Tracks last longer in mud than on a road.
The path narrows between black water and thorn-choked embankment, but Elianor’s balance carries her cleanly through. Smoke hangs lower here, bitter over the reeds.

Celia Graves
There. See the marks beside the sluice? Many feet, traveling west. Some dragged themselves.
Celia dismounts and crouches beside the mud. The impressions lead beneath a leaning stone bridge, then climb toward the ford beyond the canal.

Maurice Headsman
We have reached the ford road without losing the trail. Celia, you read the signs. Elianor, stay close.
The canal path opens onto the ford’s eastern approach. Across the shallow water, burned wagons stand crooked against the gray sky, and fresh tracks vanish among them.

Learn what commands the Baron's dead
“Can Celia read who commands these dead from their tracks?”
YES, AND MORE (Unlikely, rolled 5)

Celia studies the churned mud beneath the burned wagons, tracing heel marks, dragging feet, and the deep furrows left by something heavy being hauled west.

Celia Graves
The dead are not wandering. They march under a single command, and that command comes from the Baron’s war host.
She points to a narrow line of boot prints crossing the corpses’ trail. The living scouts kept to the eastern bank, marking the ford before the dead arrived.

Celia Graves
More than that, they passed through a concealed sluice beneath the old road. It opens behind the burned wagons and reaches the western bank unseen.

Maurice Headsman
A hidden crossing gives us cover, and perhaps a way around their sentries. Can you lead us through it?

Celia Graves
I can. The water is shallow, and the stonework still holds. Elianor can cross without exposing herself to the ford.
Celia rises and gathers her reins. Beneath the wreckage, a black opening waits in the reed bank, its passage concealed from anyone watching the road.
“I cross the hidden sluice toward the western bank”
FAILURE (Fair Agility, rolled -3)

Elianor enters the concealed sluice, boots sinking among slick stones as shallow water threads around her ankles. The cramped passage smells of wet earth and old smoke.
Near the center, one stone rolls beneath her foot. She catches the wall, but loose masonry gives way, and she drops hard to one knee in the cold channel.

Elianor Vale
The passage is less stable than it appeared.

Celia Graves
Hold still. Do not force your weight against that wall.
Water surges through the loosened stones, clouding the sluice and blocking the narrow route ahead with fresh rubble. Elianor remains on the eastern side, soaked to the knee.

Maurice Headsman
Back out carefully. We will not bring the whole road down on top of us.

Celia Graves
The crossing is closed for now. We need another way through, or a safer place to clear it.
“I find another route across the ford”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Survival, rolled +1)
Elianor backs from the collapsed sluice and studies the ford through the reeds. Beyond the burned wagons, a line of half-submerged stepping stones follows the old millrace toward the western bank.

Elianor Vale
The stones are sound beneath the silt, but the current runs hard between them.
She moves along the eastern bank, testing each stone with the ashwood spear before shifting her weight. At the final gap, she braces against a wagon axle and reaches the far side.
The current twists her ankle as she crosses, scraping her shin against submerged masonry. She catches herself, leaving a bright smear on the wet stone, but reaches the western bank.

Celia Graves
You found a crossing. Sit long enough to bind that scrape, or it will stiffen before we face the dead.

Maurice Headsman
The wagons hide our approach from the road. I will bring the horses through one at a time, then we follow the scouts’ trail.
Celia climbs onto the western bank and examines the mud beyond the wreckage. Fresh boot prints angle toward a stand of burned alder, while the concealed ford lies behind them.
