The seaside mansion leans into the storm. Saltwater ticks through cracked windows, and every wall of the entrance hall is crowded with charcoal sketches of the same black, many-sided artifact.

At the hall's center, a salt-stained table bears an open diary. Its newest page shudders, then fills with fresh handwriting beneath the last sentence.

The Artist

No. No, that is not what I believed. It cannot mean that.

The Artist thrusts the page toward sinder. Ink crawls across it in a cramped, unfamiliar hand: Destroying the artifact will not end the haunting. It will give the haunting a door.

Behind the locked studio door, something heavy drags itself across the floor. The sketches nearest the door have been scratched through, except for one. In that drawing, the artifact has a wolf's open jaws.

You can read the signs, can't you? Tell me whether I should burn the diary, break the seal, or leave this house before it remembers us.

The door's lock turns once from the other side. The Artist freezes with the page between them, while a second, slower turn begins.

Prevent the haunting from entering the mansion

I study the wolf-jawed sketch for a warning about the seal.

The wolf-jawed sketch yields to close scrutiny. Its charcoal lines are not teeth, but repeated wards, each one broken at the mouth.

At the throat of the drawn beast, a small seal has been marked over and over. The marks show the same warning: the door must remain witnessed, not opened or destroyed.

The Artist

The Artist

Witnessed. It needs a living mind to hold the boundary.

The second turn stops. Through the keyhole, darkness presses outward, carrying the faint scrape of something tracing the other side of the seal.

The Artist

Then I must keep watch. But if it takes my mind, the boundary goes with me.

The Artist lowers the diary page and backs from the door. The charcoal wolf seems to turn its head toward the studio, while the lock waits beneath the pressure of an unseen hand.

The Artist

The Artist

Will you stand beside me and witness it, or choose another way?

I order the Artist away from the door

sinder

Artist, away from the door. Now.

The command cuts through the storm. The Artist obeys, crossing to the far side of the hall and putting the entrance pillars between themself and the studio.

The Artist

The Artist

Yes. I will not stand there.

Their retreat breaks a rotten floorboard with a sharp crack. Dust shakes from the ceiling, and the sound carries into the sealed room.

From behind the studio door, something answers by dragging one slow stroke across the wood. The lock begins turning again.

The Artist

The Artist

You have moved me from the threshold, but the boundary still needs a witness. Do you take my place, or do we burn the diary?

I take the Artist's place as witness

Sinder crosses the hall and takes the Artist's place before the sealed studio. She faces the door without touching it.

The Artist

The Artist

Do not look away. The witness must remain present.

The turning lock stops. The dragging mark darkens, then stills. The boundary recognizes sinder, and the pressure behind the door withdraws from the threshold.

sinder

The lock has stopped turning.

Success carries a price. A thin black line closes around sinder's boots, pinning her shadow to the floor. The longer she witnesses, the colder the line becomes.

The Artist

The Artist

It accepted you. If you break eye contact, the door may open. Tell me when I can take the boundary back.
