Kahlani turns her back on the river and heads into the Whispering Woods. Behind her, the crossing shrinks into mist and stone, while ahead the trees close ranks in silver-green layers.
The Squire and the Messenger remain at the waterline, their figures thinning with distance as the path bends. Kahlani’s frost magic fades from her feathers, leaving only cool air and leaf-damp silence.
The forest greets her with soft footing, moss, and the scent of wet bark. High branches weave a pale roof overhead, and drifting fog blurs the trail into a narrow, uncertain ribbon.

Kahlani
The woods are quieter than the river.
A shallow birdcall answers from somewhere far off, then vanishes into the hush. Kahlani keeps moving, light on her feet, her cloak brushing fern fronds as she follows the dim path.
After a few paces, a split in the trail appears ahead, one track rising into thicker mist, the other dipping toward darker ground. Something small and pale hangs from a branch at the fork, barely moving.

Kahlani slows at the fork and studies the ground instead of the pale thing in the branches. One path is firmer, brushed by frequent boots and a drag of cart-rut mud. The other is soft with needles and half-hidden by bramble, the kind of track folk use when they want to be missed.

Kahlani
The left track has the cleaner sign.
A thin gust moves through the trees, and the hanging pale shape turns just enough to show itself, not a charm, but a strip of bark or hide tied with cord. It is a marker, weathered and old, pointing deeper into the woods where the safer road bends away.
Kahlani follows the marked track a few careful paces, then stops where the undergrowth opens into a small hollow screened by roots and fern. The trail there is hidden from the fork, but still close enough to regain quickly.
The air changes. Under the leaf-must and rain-cool bark, Kahlani catches a faint old scent of smoke and sawdust, the sort that clings to a settled place.
Beyond the hollow, a line of split branches and stunted posts marks the edge of a settlement’s outer path, half-swallowed by fog. She has found the way, and she has found a place to step off the trail without being exposed.
But when the breeze shifts again, the unyielding scar on the messenger’s wrist seems to tug at the memory of the air, and the woods answer with a faint, uneasy whisper from behind her.

“Purge the mark from me.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Frost Magic, rolled +2)

Kahlani draws a slow breath and answers the lingering stain with a precise thread of frost. The air around her wrist tightens, then goes still, as if the woods are holding its breath with her.
The cold sinks through skin and spirit. When it clears, the pressure is gone, and the mark no longer tugs at her sense of direction. It is not gone from the world, but it is no longer on her.
A soft crackle of rime runs over the last whisper of heat in her feathers, then fades. The hollow remains quiet for one heartbeat too long.
Then the quiet breaks. A thin pull answers from somewhere in the fog, not a voice, not quite a sound, but a faint thread of attention brushing the edge of the woods.

Kahlani
The trail is not on her anymore. Something is still following the trail.
From the branches beyond the hollow, the pale marker turns once in the wind, and the split-branch path seems suddenly less like a guide than a warning.
