Wrenera grips the orb as the pale ring shivers through the shredded circus camp. Torn canvas snaps on bent poles, and the light holds the broken space at bay.

A young scavenger stumbles through the ruins, breathless and mud-smeared, his gaze locking on the glow in Wrenera's hand.

Elian

Elian

Careful. Do not let him near it.

Kaelen

Kaelen

That thing is worth a fortune. I only need a look, maybe a touch.

Above the camp, a shadow slides across the cloud cover, too vast and too smooth to be a bird.

Wrenera

Wrenera

The shadow is not from the tents.

Kaelen slows at last, weighing Wrenera, the orb, and the tremor in the air with hungry caution.

I keep the orb away from Kaelen

Wrenera shifts the orb closer to her chest and turns her shoulder into Kaelen’s path. The pale ring steadies around her grip, keeping his reach outside its glow.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Easy. I am not asking for much, just a closer look.

He takes one more step, then stops when the light brushes his fingers and makes him flinch back.

Elian

Elian

Do not touch it, Kaelen. The barrier is tied to her hand now.

Kaelen’s hunger cracks into alarm as the shadow above the camp widens, blotting more of the cloud cover.

Kaelen

Kaelen

If that ring fails, I am dead first.

He backs away from Wrenera at last, but his eyes keep darting between the orb and the dark shape overhead, torn between flight and one last greedy gamble.

Wrenera shifts the orb a fraction higher, and Kaelen’s fingers stop short of the light. He cannot get past her guard, not now.

The glow bites against her forearm, hot and insistent, and she feels it tremble with her grip. A thin bead of sweat breaks at her temple.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Fine. Keep your cursed prize. I am not dying for your charity.

He jerks back, then freezes as the shadow overhead thickens, darkening the torn canvas around them.

Elian

Elian

Do you see it? The barrier still holds, but not forever.

Kaelen swallows, eyes fixed on the widening shape above the camp. His greed sours into fear, and his hand drifts toward the path out.

The orb hums in Wrenera’s grasp, steady for the moment, while the air beyond the camp shivers with pressure.

Is Kaelen going to run from the dragon?

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 59)

That shadow is not just a storm, it is a death sentence. I am no hero, and I will not be here when it descends.

Wrenera

Wrenera

He is truly terrified, his eyes darting toward the treeline as if he can already see his escape route.

Elian

Elian

Let him go, Wrenera. My name is Elian, and I fear he is the only one of us with the sense to run while the path remains clear.

I keep guard over the orb

Wrenera keeps the orb steady, and the trembling in the camp eases into a tense hush. The glow firms in her hands, no longer wavering with the shadow above.

A thin line of light crawls across the torn canvas, then settles, as if the camp itself has chosen her grip over the dark.

Elian

Elian

So it answers to her. Good. The seal may hold after all.

Kaelen stops mid-turn at the treeline, looking back over his shoulder. His panic sharpens into greed again when he sees the orb still secure.

Kaelen

Kaelen

If that thing is the only shield, then I am not leaving it with you unguarded.

The shadow presses lower, and the air around the camp goes cold enough to sting. A broken ring of painted poles flickers with pale light, revealing a narrow path opening behind the wagons.

Elian’s head snaps toward the path, then back to Wrenera and the orb. Kaelen lunges toward the light instead of the woods.

Is Kaelen about to attack the orb?

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 49)

His eyes are locked on the orb, not the dragon, and his fingers are already curling into claws.

Elian

Elian

Wrenera, watch him. He does not care if the sky falls, so long as he holds the light.

I hold the orb tighter

Wrenera tightens both hands around the orb. The glow steadies against her palms, and the cold bite in the air eases by a breath.

Elian

Elian

Good. Keep your grip. The ring answers you better than it ever answered me.

Kaelen skids to a halt in the wreckage, his reaching hand jerking back as the light burns across his knuckles again. His greed falters in plain view.

Kaelen

Kaelen

That thing is mine by right of finding.

Above them, the dragon's shadow drifts across the torn canvas and broken wagons, darker than before, but the ring of light holds its shape.

Elian

Elian

No. It is the only thing keeping us alive.

Kaelen takes one step backward, then another, torn between flight and hunger. He does not run yet. He watches Wrenera's hands instead.

Wrenera holds the orb still as Kaelen edges in, and the light does not waver. The distortion around his hands shivers, then thins, like heat fleeing glass.

Kaelen

Kaelen

No, no, not this close...

Kaelen's face drains of color. He jerks away from the burn, greed giving way to fear, and his boots scrape backward through splintered canvas.

Elian

Elian

Run, Kaelen. Unless you mean to die for a handful of spark and splinters.

The scavenger swallows hard. He looks once at the orb, once up into the passing shadow, and the choice leaves him.

Kaelen

Kaelen

Keep your cursed prize. I want no part of what follows.

He turns and bolts for the camp's broken edge. The ring of light still holds, but the dragon's shadow deepens over the wreckage, waiting above the valley.

Wrenera keeps the orb pinned against the cold rush of the shadow. The ring of light flares once, then steadies, and the blackness overhead splits around it instead of swallowing it.

The strain bites back at her palms. Her arms tremble, and the orb leaves a bright, stubborn burn through the leather as she holds on.

Elian

Elian

That is it. Hold fast, Wrenera.

Kaelen reaches the broken edge of the camp, then stops short. He looks over his shoulder at the glow, sees the shadow failing to cross the line, and whatever greed remained in him dies in his face.

Kaelen

Kaelen

I am done with this place.

He runs for good this time, vanishing beyond the torn canvas. Above, the dragon's shadow drifts on, blocked at the rim of light, while the camp huddles inside its brief shelter.

The orb still burns warm in Wrenera's grip, and the next silence feels too thin to trust.
