The Forge’s warmth pulses beneath Mugen’s skin, steady as a second heart. Faded red handprints cross the mountainside, leading down toward a ravine veiled in drifting ash.
The trail becomes an abandoned pilgrim road, its prayer-stones split and toppled. At its end, an elderly man with a narrow, weathered face tends a crude shrine built from broken chains; his brown robe is patched with red thread, and one eye is clouded white.

Brother Caldus
Stop there, traveler. That ember-sign beneath your skin belongs to Avaros, unless the mountain has begun lending out false miracles.
The old man rises with effort, keeping one hand on the chain-bound altar. Wind moves through the links, producing a thin, mournful chime beneath the mountain’s deeper rumble.

Brother Caldus
I am Brother Caldus. I served the pilgrims before this road was abandoned. Caravans carrying the stolen pass here, then vanish into the old quarry tunnels.

Brother Caldus
If you seek those taken from the borderlands, their trail lies beneath the quarry. But the dark below keeps more than prisoners, and it has learned to listen.
Behind Brother Caldus, a lean elderly man with iron-gray hair and weathered brown skin,, the broken-chain shrine casts a narrow shadow over the road. Far below, somewhere within the mountain, metal strikes stone once, then falls silent.

“I will not leave them in need darkness is like a home to me now. *he shows no hesitation as he resumes his path*”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)

Mugen
I will not leave them in need. Darkness is like a home to me now.
Mugen resumes his descent along the broken pilgrim road. Ash stings his eyes, and his bare feet find each loose stone before it can betray him.

Brother Caldus
Then take Avaros’s fire with care, Mugen. The quarry listens for those who carry it.
The slope steepens beneath him. Mugen slips once, catches himself against a prayer-stone, and tears the skin across his palm on its jagged edge.

Mugen
The blood is shallow. The tunnels are close.
He presses onward despite the sting. The road ends at the quarry mouth, where old support beams frame a descending passage and chains hang motionless in the dark.

Brother Caldus
May the Forge remember what you mean to save.
“*every few moments he lightly taps his staff on the floor almost as is listening for the echoes like a bat*”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Mugen enters the quarry passage, staff held lightly in one hand. Every few moments its tip taps the stone, sending a clean click through the darkness while ash drifts from the beams.
The first echoes return sharp from the right-hand wall, but the left answers with a dull, delayed hollow. Beneath both, a deeper resonance travels down through the floor.

Mugen
The left wall hides a chamber. The floor carries a passage downward.
He taps again, changing the rhythm. The hidden chamber gives back a broad pocket of sound, large enough for prisoners or wagons, while the descending way narrows beneath it.
A final tap finds a faint tremor in the stone: metal striking metal, far below and to the left. The quarry’s silence has a direction now.
Mugen stands at the first fork. The concealed chamber lies behind the cracked left wall; the sound of chains comes from the sloping passage beyond.
“*puts his pole against the wall and it grows pushing the passage open*”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +2)

Mugen plants the enchanted pole against the cracked left wall and braces his feet on the quarry floor. The wood answers his will, lengthening with a deep wooden groan.
The pole drives forward. Stone splits around its tip, dust boiling from the seams as the wall folds inward and exposes a broad chamber beyond.
Mugen steps through the opened passage. The chamber is large enough for wagons, its floor scored by drag marks and blackened rings where lamps once burned.

Mugen
The chains were brought through here.
Iron rings line the walls at shoulder height. Several hang empty, but one chain remains fastened near the rear, its loose end disappearing beneath a fallen slab.
From beyond the slab comes a faint metallic scrape, followed by a muffled shift of weight. The sound is close now, trapped behind the quarry’s broken stone.
“*approaches slow but confidently*”

Mugen approaches the fallen slab slowly but confidently, each step measured across the scored stone. The metallic scrape answers him, weaker now, followed by a guarded breath in the darkness.
He reaches the chain and looks beyond the broken stone. A young adult woman crouches in the narrow space, lean and ash-streaked, her narrow bronze face marked by a crooked scar through one eyebrow, with cropped black hair, a torn gray tunic, and a swollen iron shackle around one ankle.

Sera
Do not strike the slab. It will bring the quarry down. My name is Sera. Can you move it without burying us?
The enchanted pole hums faintly in Mugen’s grasp. The fallen slab has wedged against two supporting stones, but a narrow seam opens beneath its weight.

Sera
The others were taken below. I heard the chains after they dragged me here. Please, free me first, then follow them.
Sera extends her hand through the gap, keeping her body clear of the unstable stone. Dust settles over her knuckles as the chamber waits in strained silence.
Behind the slab, the shackle chain runs to a rusted ring driven into the floor. Beyond it, faint echoes rise from the descending passage, carrying the slow rhythm of many linked steps.

Free Sera
“*focuses his ki into his fist and punches the chain*”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Mugen plants his feet, draws the Forge’s heat through his arm, and closes his fist around the focused power. Sera watches from beneath the slab.
His fist crashes into the chain. The iron ring tears from the quarry floor with a sharp crack, and the links burst apart beneath the blow.
The impact drives Mugen’s knuckles against the stone behind the broken ring. Skin splits across them, and his braced shoulder jolts painfully, but the chain lies slack.

Sera
You did it. Pull the loose length through, slowly. I can crawl free now.
Mugen draws the severed chain aside. Sera slips her swollen ankle from the loosened shackle and crawls clear as dust sifts from the slab.

Sera
The others are below, and those steps are theirs. We have a chance before the chains return.
From the descending passage, the linked footsteps fade into deeper stone. Sera rises beside Mugen, favoring her freed ankle, while the broken chain rests between them.

Free Sera
“*as they walk below he focuses the ki to heal them both*”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Mugen and Sera begin down the descending passage, moving carefully through the dust. He gathers his ki beneath his ribs, then guides its steady warmth through both their bodies.
The energy flows into Sera’s swollen ankle and eases the stiffness from it. Her limp lessens with each step, while Mugen’s split knuckles draw closed beneath the same focused current.

Sera
The pain is fading. I can walk properly now.
Sera tests her freed foot against the stone, then keeps pace beside him. The chain marks around her ankle remain, but the swelling has gone down.
Mugen’s hand closes without the earlier sharpness. The healing warmth settles into a quiet ember as the passage bends downward, carrying faint echoes from the quarry’s depths.

Sera
Whatever waits below, I will not slow you again. The others are still alive, if those chains belonged to them.
Together they descend beneath the broken chamber, Sera walking steadily now and Mugen’s injured hand restored enough for the danger ahead.
“if it gets dangerous make sure you get away, i wont want to see you be hurt.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Mugen
If danger comes, get away from me. I will not see you hurt for my sake.
Sera slows on the sloping passage and turns toward him. The last warmth of Mugen’s healing still steadies her ankle, while distant chains murmur below.

Sera
Then we face danger wisely, not separately. I will retreat when you tell me, but I will not abandon the others.
Her voice remains quiet, yet it carries firmly through the stone. She takes the wall-side of the passage, leaving Mugen room to meet whatever waits ahead.

Sera
There. The chains are louder now. The prisoners must be close.
The passage opens onto a ledge above a vast quarry vault. Below, lanterns move between pillars, and linked figures are herded toward a black arch cut into the rock.

Sera
I can hide behind those broken supports. Give me the signal, and I will run for the upper passage.
“while I draw their attention you free the others and escape, dont look back and live a happy life.”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Mugen
While I draw their attention, free the others and escape. Do not look back. Live, and find a happy life.
Mugen steps onto the ledge in full view, letting his voice carry across the vault. Lanterns halt below, and every chain handler turns toward him.

The Chain Handlers
There! The fire-bearer! Seize him before he reaches the prisoners!
The chain handlers rush beneath the ledge, shouting and waving hooked staves. Their lanterns swing toward Mugen, leaving the black arch and the captive line in shadow.
Sera slips behind the broken supports, reaches the captives, and works their restraints loose with the fallen chain. One by one, the prisoners hurry into the upper passage.

Sera
They are free. I am leaving now, Mugen. May you survive long enough to follow.
The last prisoners vanish into the darkness above. Mugen holds the handlers’ gaze, but his resolve falters for one visible breath when Sera’s footsteps fade, leaving his spirit worn and exposed.
“*gets a grin almost sinister in nature as he sees the fight before him* Looks like this will be fun *begins his assault whirling his staff like a spinning mace it hits like steel*”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled +2)

Mugen
Looks like this will be fun.
A grim grin cuts across Mugen’s face as he launches from the ledge. The enchanted pole lengthens in his hands, its arc gathering the weight of a steel mace.
He whirls through the first rush of chain handlers. The staff smashes hooked staves aside, then crashes into their clustered ranks with ringing force, sending them sprawling across the quarry floor.

The Chain Handlers
Hold him! Break his legs before he reaches the arch!
Mugen pivots before the handlers can surround him. His injured knuckles flare with pain around the grip, but the Forge’s heat steadies his wrist as the pole sweeps two more hunters off their feet.
Lanterns tumble and gutter. The chain handlers lie scattered or scramble backward, their formation broken, while the black arch stands open behind them and the freed prisoners vanish into the upper passage.

The Chain Handlers
Fall back! The fire-bearer is too strong!
“*lets none escape as he charges the fire into a blue fireball detonating them in a flame*”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Mugen plants his feet amid the fallen lanterns and draws the Forge’s heat into his wounded hand. Blue fire gathers around his fist, bright enough to bleach the quarry walls.
The chain handlers break toward separate tunnels, but the fireball leaves Mugen’s grasp before any can escape. It crosses the vault like a small falling star.
Blue flame detonates among them. The blast rolls across the stone floor and engulfs the fleeing hunters, ending their pursuit in one thunderous flash.
Heat strikes Mugen’s bare skin and dust spirals through the vault. His split knuckles throb around the enchanted pole, but the fire obeys and leaves the black arch untouched.
When the glare fades, no chain handler remains standing. Only scorched staves, guttering lanterns, and drifting blue sparks mark where the hunters tried to flee.
The quarry falls silent except for the settling stones. Above, the freed prisoners are gone, while the black arch waits open beneath the mountain.
