Goblins Attack the Red Ground

The discussion remains fixed on loss: the rootway folk lost water, shelter, and their banner’s place, while the tribe lost secure ground and families scattered by old raids. Two willing volunteers stand beside Heulguer with empty satchels; the defenders hold the herd side of the stone partition.

We can name those losses after we survive this. Protect the families first. Volunteers, stay by the partition and keep the crossing clear.

An arrow slices past Heulguer’s head and quivers in the red earth. More shafts follow, striking dirt, hide tents, and boundary posts as the distant camp erupts into alarm.

Beyond the far boundary, more than thirty aggressive goblins advance in rough ranks, roaring behind spears and bows. Several hurl stones over the posts while others loose arrows toward the scrambling camp.

Defenders, to the families! Take bows from the racks and hold the herd side. Do not abandon the shelters.

The defenders dive behind the partition and seize bows, while the two volunteers crouch beside the carved channel-stone. Dust bursts from a nearby post as a thrown rock smashes into it.

✓ Quest Accepted

Hold the camp against the goblin assault

“I react and go to the weapons racks for bow and arrows”

SUCCESS (Fair Athletics, rolled -1)

Goblins Attack the Red Ground

Heulguer reacts to the first volley and moves for the weapons racks. His stern honor makes him angle around the volunteers instead of trampling past them, costing precious speed.

The Giant Rapier becomes a bracing staff in his grasp. He uses its length to vault the broken boundary post, while Red Ridge Navigation picks the firmest red-sand line through the scrambling camp.

An uneven patch shifts beneath his wrenched ankle as he lands. His weight lurches, and the joint twists sharply, but he catches himself against the rack instead of falling.

The weapons rack shudders under his grip. He reaches through the hanging bows, selects a stout hunting bow, and tears a full quiver free from its peg.

The rough draw strains his already burdened leg, but his giant strength steadies the bow. He fits the quiver across his back and takes several arrows in hand.

Heulguer stands armed beside the racks, bow ready and arrows secured. Behind him, the defenders hold the herd side while the volunteers remain crouched by the channel-stone.

Another arrow strikes the rack and splinters wood beside his hand. The cost of the rush settles into his twisted ankle, but the bow and arrows are firmly his.

The land punishes that person.

“I stay low and behind cover, looking for a nonchalant, well covered spot to fire from and return arrow fire”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Combat, rolled +1)

Goblins Attack the Red Ground

Heulguer stays low behind the weapons rack, then follows Red Ridge Navigation through the camp’s hard red-sand contours. It leads him to a shallow hide behind a reinforced water trough and boundary post.

The land enforces its judgment around him: the stone partition holds his chosen cover apart from both duties, denying a commanding advance but preserving a quiet firing lane. His wrenched ankle bears the careful shift.

He settles behind the trough, keeping his massive outline below the rim. The Hunting Bow braces against the post, while the Quiver rides high enough for his hand to draw without exposing his head.

Aggressive Goblins

Find the bowman! Drive them from the shelters!

Their shouting gives him a rhythm. His stern honor urges him to rise and answer the attack openly, but the defended families and volunteers hold his purpose steady; he remains covered.

He draws from the Quiver, waits for a goblin raider to clear another’s line, and releases. The arrow strikes the exposed attacker’s shield arm, knocking the spear aside and forcing the rough rank backward.

Heulguer lowers again before returning shafts find the trough. From this well-covered spot, his bow commands a clean angle across the approach, and the goblins now advance under accurate fire.

The land punishes that person.

“I shoot another arrow”

FAILURE (Mediocre Ranged Combat, rolled -2)

Goblins Attack the Red Ground

Heulguer draws another arrow from the Quiver and settles the Hunting Bow against the post. Red Ridge Navigation traces the firm red-sand contours toward the advancing goblins.

His stern honor demands an exposed, unmistakable shot instead of a patient angle through the scrambling ranks. The land’s judgment holds him low, narrowing the opening.

He releases. The arrow slips wide of the intended raider, strikes a boundary post, and knocks loose a lash that whips across the goblins’ front.

The rough ranks recoil and bunch behind raised shields. Their advance loses its clean rhythm, and the firing lane closes before another arrow can offer the same target.

Yet the broken lash exposes a narrow route beside the water trough, leading toward the goblins’ uncovered stone-throwers and away from the sheltering families.

Hold the shields! Circle the trough and drag their defenders out!

“I cast a blinding flare in their sight”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Arcana, rolled +1)

Goblins Attack the Red Ground

Heulguer raises one broad hand from behind the trough and shapes a flare through the Hunting Bow’s steady line. His stern honor pulls the magic toward a direct, exposed burst, making the casting coarse and difficult.

Divine Blessing steadies the imperfect spell. White-gold radiance erupts across the goblins’ sight, blooming over shields, spears, and the uncovered stone-throwers with merciless brightness.

Aggressive Goblins

Blind! Hold the line! Shields up!

The goblins stagger and clutch at their faces. Their shield wall breaks apart, stone-throwers drop their aim, and the route beside the trough opens completely toward the exposed rear ranks.

The land punishes Heulguer’s divided impulse at once: the stone partition rises sharply between his cover and the tribal side, fixing him to the attack-facing ground while leaving the volunteers and families sealed behind protection.

The flare fades from harsh white to sparks, but its blindness holds long enough to disrupt the assault. His Hunting Bow remains braced, and the goblins stand exposed and disordered before him.

The land punishes that person.

“I yell for arrow volley's and fire arrows myself”

SUCCESS (Mediocre Diplomacy and leadership, rolled +1)

Heulguer

Heulguer

Tribe defenders, arrow volley! Loose together at the exposed goblins. I fire with you!

Heulguer rises enough to be seen and shouts across the partition. His overly stern honor makes the command rigid, but Divine Blessing carries it clearly to the defenders behind the stone.

The partition keeps him on the attack-facing ground. Red Ridge Navigation marks a firm firing angle through the disordered ranks, while the Quiver feeds his hand and the Hunting Bow holds steady despite his wounded stance.

Heulguer draws and releases. From behind the partition, the defenders answer in a disciplined volley, their arrows crossing his own and striking the exposed goblins’ shields, arms, and spear hands.

Aggressive Goblins

Fall back! The bow giant has turned the whole camp against us!

The volley breaks the assault’s momentum. Goblins stumble behind their shields and retreat from the posts, leaving the shelters and herd side secure while Heulguer’s arrows remain fixed among their scattered front.
