Beyond the last thorn trees, a ruined watchtower rises from the dusk. Three bandits wait among its stones, cloaked and watchful, while their captain steps into the firelight.
The captain is a broad-shouldered middle-aged man with a scarred cheek, iron-gray beard, and a patched red cloak, its hem ragged above mud-stained boots. His hand rests near a curved sword as his eyes measure the wrapped weapon.

The Bandit Captain
Blackpick. You brought the blade. Good. Set it on the stone and step away.
Behind him, the three bandits shift into a loose half-circle. Their attention keeps returning to Bromm rather than the weapon, and the old tower smells faintly of ash and bitter herbs.

The Bandit Captain
You were told this was a simple commission. That was true, as far as it went. The blade is a key, not a weapon.
He gestures toward the tower’s black doorway. Faint silver residue clings to the threshold, almost invisible beneath the dust, and something inside answers with a slow metallic scrape.

The Bandit Captain
Put it down, dwarf. Then we can see whether your father’s craft opens the door.

Director's note
Bromm opens with a gruff voice
“"Now, why should i even trust you scoundrels? This blade, Gwenmir, was one of my father's LAST swords before he passed, and you expect me to just shove it in a door and expect something to happen?”
FAILURE (Good Bargain, rolled -2)

Bromm Blackpick
Why should I trust you scoundrels? Gwenmir was one of my father's last swords, and you expect me to shove it in a door and hope?
The captain's scar tightens as the gruff challenge reaches him. Behind him, the three bandits stop shifting and settle their hands near their weapons.

The Bandit Captain
Trust? No. You have my word, and that is all a man gets in the wastes. Your father's sword is valuable because he made it for this lock.
The answer offers no proof. The captain nods once, and the bandits close around the stone, cutting off any easy reach to Gwenmir without touching it.

The Bandit Captain
Here is the bargain instead. You open the door, and you keep the blade. Refuse, and we take it after you are disarmed.
At his words, the silver residue along the threshold brightens faintly. The metallic scrape within answers, nearer now, while Gwenmir remains between Bromm and the black doorway.

The Bandit Captain
Choose quickly, Blackpick. The lock has begun to wake, and it will not wait for either of us.
“Bromm picks up the sword and, with a quick motion, slashes off the head of the bandit captain.”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Weapons, rolled +0)

Bromm snatches Gwenmir from the stone. The enchanted blade flashes in a tight arc before the captain can draw, and the captain falls dead beside the fire.
The sudden effort wrenches Bromm's right shoulder and drives his boot hard into loose rubble. Gwenmir remains firm in his grasp, its edge darkened only by the dusk.

Bandits
Captain!
The three bandits recoil together, staring at their fallen leader. One reaches for his knife, then freezes as the silver residue on the doorway flares.

Bandits
Drop the sword, dwarf!
Inside the tower, the metallic scraping stops. Gwenmir gives a low, resonant hum, and the black doorway stands ready beneath its awakening silver markings.

Director's note
as the captain's blood touches Gwenmir, Gwenmir flares up and turns a deep crimson, seemingly becoming sharper
“Bromm turns and holds gwenmir above his head, threatening the bandits.”
FAILURE (Poor Intimidation, rolled -1)

Bromm Blackpick
Back away, you carrion dogs, or Gwenmir finds another throat.
Bromm turns and raises Gwenmir overhead. His strained right shoulder trembles beneath the effort, while the captain's blood reaches the blade and its steel flares deep crimson, narrowing to a crueler edge.

Bandits
Do it, then! The dead man has no use for threats. Drop it before the tower takes you too!
The bandits do not retreat. Instead, they split around the fire, forcing Bromm to turn with them while keeping the black doorway at their backs. His threat has given them a target, not a surrender.

Bandits
Your arm is shaking, dwarf! One step closer and we rush you together.
Silver markings crawl brighter across the threshold. Gwenmir hums in Bromm's raised fist, its crimson edge aimed skyward, while the bandits crouch low and watch for the instant his shoulder gives way.
“Bromm quickly hefts a medium sized log from next to him and attempts to spin around in a circle with it to incapacitate the bandits.”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Bromm seizes the medium log with both hands and wrenches it into a sweeping circle. The rough timber catches the firelight as his boots grind through the rubble.

Bandits
Hold formation! He's hurt!
The log slams into the first bandit and hurls him sideways, then smashes across the second's chest. The third tries to duck, but the turning timber catches his legs.
All three bandits collapse among the stones, stunned and motionless. The circle carries Bromm onward, and his strained right shoulder gives a sharp, tearing throb.
Bromm loses his footing at the end of the swing and drops to one knee, the log slipping from his hands. Gwenmir remains raised in his other grip, crimson edge humming.
Dust settles around the fallen robbers. The silver markings on the tower threshold continue to glow, and the black doorway waits open before Bromm.

“Bromm holds Gwenmir to the door, dripping some blood onto the door's opening.”
SUCCESS (Superb Strength, rolled -1)

Bromm braces Gwenmir against the silver-marked opening, forcing the crimson edge into the old lock. His injured shoulder trembles, but his grip holds.
He tilts the blade toward the captain's fallen body and lets a dark bead of blood slide along the steel, then drip onto the threshold.
The blood touches the opening. Gwenmir flares deep crimson, its edge seeming to narrow into something sharper, and the silver markings blaze across the stone.
A heavy internal bolt releases with a buried clang. The black doorway yawns wider, revealing a descending stair veiled in cold blue darkness.

Bromm Blackpick
The residue is fresh, and the lock answered the blood.
Behind him, the three bandits remain sprawled among the rubble, stunned beneath the fire's wavering light. No weapon rises, and no voice challenges him.
From below comes the slow metallic scrape again, followed by a faint stirring of air that smells of iron, dust, and extinguished flame.
