The Village Witch

Lux Nura arrives beneath a sky stained orange by fire. A farmstead burns around him, its fences collapsing while villagers search the smoking ruins for traces of whatever they saw.

An elderly village witch bars the cellar door with both hands. She is a gaunt woman in a soot-dark shawl, white hair braided with copper charms, and one clouded eye.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Do not open it. Not yet.

The locked door shudders under a heavy pounding from below. Sparks whirl through the rafters as the flames creep closer, and the witch plants her feet against the threshold.

That creature is the only proof capable of clearing a name. Without it, the innocent will wear the monster's blame.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Whose name? No. I will not say. Names travel faster than truth in a frightened village.

Beyond her, villagers call to one another through the smoke, finding broken beams and scorched earth but no certain sign. Beneath Lux's feet, the pounding comes again, stronger.

“goes in hybrid god from and goes past the witch”

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled -2)

Lux Nura's divine form unfolds through him. His white hair darkens to black threaded with gold, and his red and gold eyes burn beneath the firelit smoke as his hybrid power fills the cellar threshold.

The village witch's braced stance breaks under his advance. Lux drives past her and the barred door, shoulder-first, forcing the old timber aside while the threshold cracks beneath his feet.

The effort tears a strip of cloth and leaves a deep bruise along his shoulder. Pain flashes through the transformed strength, but it does not halt him; he reaches the cellar steps.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Stop, god of hybrids! If you open that door, the proof may become the accusation.

Behind Lux, the village witch catches herself against a scorched post. Before him, the cellar door hangs crooked, its lock trembling with each impact from below.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

I warned you because I have seen truth dressed in a monster's skin. Do not mistake power for understanding.

Lux stands beyond her reach at the cellar entrance, black-and-gold hair stirring in the furnace heat. The pounding continues beneath the warped door.

“do you have any potions”

Lux Nura

Do you have any potions?

The question cuts through the pounding, but the cellar's heat and smoke swallow its force. The witch studies Lux's transformed face, then shakes her head.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Potions? None fit for a god, and none left for ordinary wounds.

She loosens the copper-charms at her waist and draws out a small clay jar, its seal cracked but intact. The cellar door jolts again, scattering dust over Lux's bruised shoulder.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

This is not a potion. Bitterroot salve. It will dull pain and steady a damaged joint, if you can spare a breath to use it.

She sets the jar on the nearest stair, just beyond the crooked door, while the pounding abruptly stops. In the silence, something below drags a chain across stone.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Take the salve, or leave it. But listen now. The creature can speak, and its first words may tell you whose name is being buried.

A low chime rolls beneath the cellar, though no bell hangs in the burning farmstead. The clay jar trembles on the stair, and its cracked seal splits by itself.

The crooked door sighs inward. In the gap crouches a gaunt, horned figure wrapped in rust-colored chains, its ash-gray skin marked with pale, luminous scars.

The Creature

The Creature

Do not touch the salve. The witch mixed truth into it.

The jar bursts without flame. Bitter green vapor spills across the steps, while a thin line of blue fire races around the cellar threshold and seals the doorway.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

No. That ward was broken before the fire began. Someone below has called the old judgment.

The Creature

The Creature

She lies by omission. I was brought here alive, and the name was carved into the chain before I ever saw this village.

From beneath the floor, a second voice answers in a distant chorus. Every villager outside falls silent as black letters kindle across the cellar door.

“bring out the scythe”

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Lux Nura reaches beneath his cloak and draws the scythe free. Its curved blade catches the blue wardlight, silver against his black-and-gold hair.

The weapon settles into his grasp with familiar weight. The luminous scars on the creature brighten, answering the scythe's presence.

The Creature

The Creature

That edge has crossed judgment before. Keep it lowered, god, unless you mean to cut the truth from the chain.

The black letters across the door rearrange themselves beneath the scythe's shadow. Three words emerge, each burning with cold light: BOUND BY NAME.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Put it away. The old judgment recognizes weapons before it recognizes mercy.

The Creature

The Creature

If he carries that blade for justice, perhaps the name can finally be severed.

Outside, the silent villagers recoil as the cellar gives a deep, resonant groan. The blue fire holds, while the scythe's blade begins to hum.

“he up to the throne you have at the limbo and think if you should call your army to kill both”

Lux Nura turns inward, reaching for the throne that waits in Limbo beyond mortal fire. The cellar blurs, but the blue wardlight remains fixed around him.

His awareness rises toward Limbo, where the throne's black steps appear through a white, empty vastness. The path narrows before he can reach them.

The Creature

The Creature

The judgment has caught your name, god. It will not let you summon what waits beyond it.

The words BOUND BY NAME flare across the threshold. Lux's connection to the throne folds shut, and the scythe's hum dies in his hand.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

There. Now you understand. This place is not merely holding the creature. It is holding you to its question.

The possibility of calling his army remains unspoken and distant, sealed behind the judgment. The creature lowers its head as another name begins forming in the stone.

The Creature

The Creature

Do not strike blindly. Read what the chain was made to accuse.
