Violet reaches the fish market as overturned stalls litter the wet stones. A tall, gaunt young adult man stands amid the frightened fishers, wearing a weather-stained black cloak and a silver signet; one pale scar cuts his eyebrow.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

A village lies beneath a curse. Someone here is feeding it, hiding among these honest hands. I am Aldren Vey, and I swear the spy is in this market.

The fishers recoil from one another. Nets scrape across the cobbles as several hands rise defensively, while the lord, his dark hair tied at the nape above a narrow, weathered face scans every frightened face.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

There. The crate beside the ruined stall. It was sealed when I arrived, and now the curse answers my accusation.

A sealed fish crate shudders without a hand touching it. Seawater seeps through its boards, spreading across the stones with black petals that smell faintly of cold earth.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

Do not break the seal. If the petals reach the tide, the curse may find a second shore.

The market falls silent except for dripping water and the crate's slow, hollow knocking. Every fisher watches Violet now, waiting to see what she does.

Find the spy feeding the village curse

I do not know. That is why the curse is dangerous. The spy wears an honest face, and may not even understand what they serve.

The black petals tighten into a ring around the crate. Beyond it, the frightened fishers edge apart, each wary of every other pair of hands.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

Watch the water, not the accusations. It will answer when the one who fed the curse comes close enough.

A fisher near the ruined stall takes one cautious step backward. The crate's knocking stops, and the dark water beside their boot trembles.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

There. Do you see? The curse recognizes movement, but recognition is not proof. Do not condemn them yet.

The fisher freezes, pale beneath wind-burned cheeks, while the others retreat toward the market's awnings. A thin crack opens across the crate's sealed lid.

Who is this spy?

Violet crouches beside the crate without touching the seal. She studies the thin crack, tracing its branching shape with her eyes as black water gathers beneath it.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

I cannot give you a name. I know only that the curse has a servant, willing or unwitting.

The crack widens by a hair. Within the lid, something pale glimmers under the seal, shaped like a curled root but pulsing with faint blue light.

Frightened Fisher 1

I never touched that crate. I only stepped away when it started knocking.

The fisher, a middle-aged woman with a sturdy build, cropped brown hair, and a patched ochre wool coat raises both empty hands. Around them, the other frightened fishers hold back beneath the awnings, while the dark ring contracts toward Violet's boots.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

Look for a pattern in the crack. If the seal breaks, step away and let me contain what answers.

The blue pulse fades, leaving a fine branching mark across the lid. Beneath it, the water stills, waiting for Violet's examination.

Violet leans close without touching the seal. The branching mark is no random fracture: each line bends toward the black ring, converging beneath the crate's iron clasp.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

The pattern is a name written in pieces. Serah Vale. That is the name I was given for the spy, though I cannot tell you whether she serves the curse willingly.

The pale root beneath the lid pulses once. A hairline fracture races through the wax, and the frightened fisher nearest the ruined stall stumbles farther beneath the awning.

Frightened Fisher 1

Frightened Fisher 1

You said it would answer when she came near. I am not Serah Vale. I have never heard that name before today.

Violet's examination brings the seal to its breaking point. Wax splits with a dry snap, and the lid lifts a finger's breadth as blue light spills across the wet stones.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

Back, Violet. Let it open without your hand on it.

Violet steps back. The crate's lid falls open, revealing only the curled blue-lit root and a scrap of black thread. The water ring contracts, then goes still.

“Is Serah Vale hiding among these fishers?”

YES, BUT (Likely, rolled 63)

The root twists toward the awning instead of the tide. Among the clustered fishers, a young adult woman in a rain-dark green coat, with a lean build, freckled tan skin, a narrow face, damp auburn hair, and a small white scar on her chin stands perfectly still, one hand clenched beneath her sleeve.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

There. Serah Vale is among them. She has been hiding in plain sight.

The woman pulls back her sleeve. Blue veins of light crawl across her palm, and the curled root snaps upright, drawing a thin line of black water toward her boots.

Serah Vale

Serah Vale

I did not know what I was carrying. It was sewn into my coat before I came to market.

The root lashes around her wrist and tightens. She cries out as the blue light burns through her sleeve, while the other fishers scatter beneath the awnings.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

The spy is found, but the cost has arrived. That thing is using her as its anchor.

Serah drops to one knee, trapped by the living coil, while the black water resumes its slow crawl toward the tide.

Aldren, contain the root.

Violet's request carries across the awning with calm authority. A warm gleam from her divine blessing settles over her voice, lending its urgency the weight of a quiet prayer.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

Yes. Hold her steady, Serah. I will bind what has taken root.

Aldren plants his silver signet against the stones and draws a circle of pale fire around the root. The black water halts at its edge.

Serah Vale

Serah Vale

It is loosening. I can breathe again.

The living coil slackens around Serah's wrist, pinned beneath Aldren's spell. The curled blue-lit root light gathers inside the circle, contained and unable to reach the tide.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

Contained, for now. Your blessing gave my ward the purchase it needed.

“Is Serah controlled rather than willingly serving?”

NO (Likely, rolled 82)

The pale fire tightens around the curled blue-lit root, a gnarled, finger-thick living tendril with bark-like skin and fine rootlets. Serah’s clenched hand opens, and the light in her palm steadies instead of fading.

Serah Vale

Serah Vale

It is not controlling me. I carried it here because I agreed to bring it. I knew there was a purpose, but not the curse it served.

Aldren’s circle flares. The black water recoils from Serah’s boots, while the root bends toward her willingly, its blue pulse answering her breath.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

Then you were not its puppet. You were its bearer, and you chose the road that brought it here.

Serah Vale

Serah Vale

I chose to help a stranger who promised the village would be spared. I did not know the promise belonged to the curse.

The confession leaves the market colder than the rain. Aldren keeps his ward intact, but his eyes turn from the root to Serah, measuring guilt, deception, and the danger still held between them.

“I ask Serah how to stop the root”

Serah, how do we stop the root?

Violet’s question carries through the rain. Her divine blessing warms the words, while her practiced persuasion gives them patient authority instead of accusation.

Serah Vale

Serah Vale

Do not command it or tear it loose. I must release the purpose I accepted, then tell it plainly that its road ends here.

Serah faces the tendril within Aldren’s pale circle. Her breathing steadies, and the root’s blue pulse follows her rhythm as though listening for the promised words.

Serah Vale

Serah Vale

I withdraw my consent. I will carry you no farther, and you will feed no curse through me. Return to stillness.

The tendril loosens at once. Its rootlets fold inward, the blue light dims to a harmless bead, and the black water settles inside Aldren’s ward without reaching the tide.

Aldren Vey

Aldren Vey

There is your answer. Consent sustained it, and consent has ended its passage.
