A hush settles over the pines. The masked outlaws find identical silver coins pressed into the needles around their boots, each stamped with a crowned woman whose eyes have been scratched away.

The Coin-Counting Bounty Hunter
That mint is old. Older than this road, perhaps. Do not ask me who scattered them, because I have no answer.
The bounty hunter turns one coin beneath his thumb, then drops it as though its chill has reached his bones. Around him, the masked outlaws stare into the dark between the trunks.

Mara Vey
A summons. I have seen coins like these before, left along the highway. Afterward, travelers disappeared.
The sellsword rubs her freed wrists and studies the nearest coin without touching it. Her gaze shifts from the scratched crown to Felix, measuring whether his bargain has carried them into a deeper danger.

The Coin-Counting Bounty Hunter
Take your woman and go, traveler. My men and I will not chase a warning stamped in silver.
No outlaw moves to stop them. The coin-counting bounty hunter remains with his masked company beneath the scaffold, while the freed sellsword stands beside Felix, the coins glinting like small, blind stars.

“"Don't worry I will go now with the woman so no need to worry about us." Then Felix looks at the woman and motions her to follow him away from the other people and as soon as they get far enough away he looks back at her "Do you mind explaining what they mean by a warning stamped in silver, or do you plan on being quiet about it."”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled -1)

Felix Kov
Do not worry. I will go now with the woman, so there is no need to worry about us.
Felix motions the sellsword after him, leaving the scaffold and its uneasy company behind. Lightning flickers faintly through his staff while earth magic firms the loose trail beneath their retreating steps.

Felix Kov
Do you mind explaining what they mean by a warning stamped in silver, or do you plan on being quiet about it?
Far enough from the others, Felix looks back at her. She stops beneath the pines, rubbing one wrist, and the moon catches the scar above her brow.

Mara Vey
My name is Mara Vey. Those coins mark a summons from the Hollow Queen, or from the people pretending to serve her.

Mara Vey
They appear before someone vanishes. No trail, no ransom, no body. The coin is all that remains, and whoever follows the trail is noticed next.

Mara Vey
You wanted the truth, noble traveler. Now you have it, and I owe you a debt. But do not mistake that debt for trust.
Her answer gives the silver a purpose, but her guarded stare makes the cost plain: Mara now suspects Felix chose her rescue for reasons of his own.
“"Well my name is Felix... Felix Kov, and do not worry Mara, I very much know my position with you right now so I don't plan on pushing for answers if you don't wish to say. I'm just more curious as to anything and simply wanted to know something if you wished to tell or not." Felix makes sure to stop using his magic so she isn't that much on guard with her "But anyways if you're wondering I don't plan on collecting your bounty any time soon, just need to ask some questions if possible."”
SUCCESS (Good Persuasion, rolled -2)

Felix Kov
Well, my name is Felix. Felix Kov. Do not worry, Mara. I know my position with you, and I will not press for answers you do not wish to give. I am simply curious, and wanted to know something, if you wished to tell me.
Felix lets the magic fade from his staff and skin. The last blue spark dies quietly, and the earth beneath their boots loosens back into ordinary pine needles. Mara watches the change, her shoulders easing by a narrow degree.

Felix Kov
But if you are wondering, I do not plan on collecting your bounty any time soon. I only need to ask some questions, if that is possible.

Mara Vey
That is a fairer offer than most nobles make. Ask, then. I will answer what I can, and I will tell you plainly when the answer is not yours to have.
Mara steps nearer, though she keeps one hand close to the sword at her hip. The surrender of Felix's magic has bought him an opening, but her guarded posture makes the cost clear: her trust remains conditional.

Mara Vey
For this courtesy, I owe you one honest answer before dawn. Spend it carefully, Felix Kov. After that, my debt is paid, and we part without promises.

Mara Vey
He lowered the threat without being asked. That earns an answer, not my back.
The scratched silver coins glimmer faintly between the trees behind them. Mara waits in the moonlit road, willing to speak now, but only once on terms she controls.
“Has Mara seen the summons issuer in person?”
NO, AND WORSE (Unlikely, rolled 95)

Mara Vey
No. I have never seen the one who issues them, nor anyone who claims to speak for the Hollow Queen.
A silver coin behind Felix turns over by itself. Its scratched crown faces the sky, and a second coin answers from deeper in the pines with a thin, clear chime.

Mara Vey
Worse, Felix. The summons has changed hands. It was waiting for you to take mine.
Three coins slide across the road without tracks, arranging themselves in a line that leads away from the scaffold and toward the blackest stand of pines. The air there grows unnaturally still.

Mara Vey
It noticed him. Gods help us, it noticed him before he even chose whether to follow.

Mara Vey
I can answer what I know, but this is no longer merely my trail. If we stay here, whoever watches will learn exactly where to find us.
Beyond the trees, something heavy exhales. No figure emerges, yet every coin points toward the sound, and the moonlight along the road dims as though a cloud has passed beneath it.
“Felix turns his innate magic back on now alerted to the danger "Then I suggest we get out of here as quickly as possible, do you know the quickest route out of here and fast so our visitor doesn't get to us."”
SUCCESS (Good Willpower, rolled +0)

Felix Kov
Then I suggest we get out of here as quickly as possible. Do you know the fastest route out, and can we take it before our visitor reaches us?
Felix turns his innate magic back on. Blue lightning coils from his blood into the staff, his draconic power sharpening each spark, while earth magic compacts the road beneath their feet.

Mara Vey
Yes. The old charcoal path cuts east to the river, then follows the water south. It is the quickest way beyond these woods.
Mara points between the pines. The heavy breathing fades behind them, and the three silver coins pivot together, their line now aimed toward the eastern darkness.

Mara Vey
Keep the lightning ready, but do not waste it. The path is narrow, and the riverbank offers no shelter if that thing follows.
Felix's staff casts blue light across the roots as the hardened earth forms a firm track ahead. Mara moves onto it at once, sword hand free, and the two leave the road behind.

Mara Vey
Stay close, Felix. If the coins begin to ring, we run without looking back.
“Are the silver coins guiding our unseen pursuer?”
YES (VeryLikely, rolled 31)

The three silver coins slide ahead along the hardened earth, stopping only when they reach the eastern path. Each turns toward the darkness, then rings once.

Mara Vey
They are not merely marking the way, Felix. They are showing it where we go. The thing behind us is following their trail.
Behind them, the forest answers with a long breath. No branches break, yet the darkness advances between the trunks, keeping pace with the coins.

Mara Vey
The summons is leading it straight to us. If we lose the coins, perhaps we lose the trail.
One coin veers toward a fork where the charcoal path divides around a fallen pine. The other two follow, arranging themselves along the narrower branch beside the riverward slope.

Mara Vey
There. The river path. We must keep moving, but remember this: the coins are not guiding us away from it. They are guiding it toward us.
The coins ring together again, brighter than before. Far behind, something answers with a hollow note, and the unseen pursuer quickens through the pines.
“I lead Mara down the river path”
