The storage room closes around Mariella Moonstone and Oswin Holt, all damp grain, sour ale, and warped timber. The tavern noise fades behind the barred door.

“That promised drink, then. Strong enough to put heat in a corpse.”

Oswin pushes away from the crates and studies her face. His gaze drops to her still chest, then to the dark space beneath the shelves.

“You do not breathe.”

His hand tightens around the neck of an empty bottle. He is frightened, but curiosity and drink hold him in place.

“I saw the same cold woman near the mill road, on the night those folk vanished. Give me your drink, and I keep that thought to myself.”

The Accusation Behind Bars

Mariella Moonstone slips through the fourth axis. For Oswin Holt, she vanishes between one heartbeat and the next.

A thread of near-invisible darkness settles around Oswin Holt's neck, drawn from space where no hand could reach.

The thread tightens in one silent, decisive motion, severing Oswin Holt's head and killing him instantly.

His empty bottle strikes the floor beside the broken clay cup. The storage room becomes still except for the faint scrape of glass.

Beyond the barred door, someone hears the fall. A chair scrapes across the tavern floor, followed by hurried footsteps.

The bar shudders under a sudden pounding. A muffled voice calls Oswin Holt's name, and the latch begins to lift.
